Question for conservatives who support the Florida parental rights bill

Given the language of the bill, how should a teacher answer a question from a first grade student about why Billy has two dads and no mom?

Does the teacher just say they can't talk about that? Is that the kind of censorship you really want in our schools?
AlyAngel · F
Its ridiculous in this day and age that we still need to sensor this. Family is family. Who cares if billy has two dads or sara has two mamas or travis has a mama and daddy. As long as they are loving and supporitve families it shouldnt matter
Elessar · 26-30, M
@AlyAngel I would guess the thing that irritates conservatives the most about LGBT people is that they can have sex without the risk of unwanted pregnancies, that they could otherwise force them to carry to the term. (/s.. hopefully)
@AlyAngel At least Florida got rid of the law prohibiting gays from adopting.
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
Just say ask your parents. Teachers have no need to talk about sex and gender with little kids. It's not their place.

American Primary and Secondary education is mediocre at best. Let's focus on reading, writing, math, science, geography and history. We do a bad job as it is and we don't have time for this other stuff.

@BohemianBoo Discusing their sex lives
@HoraceGreenley Do you have any evidence that's happening?
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@BohemianBoo ive read articles to that effect
JesseInTX · 51-55, M
According to that law the teacher can answer that question. No where in the bill does it say they can’t discuss homosexuality. It says gender identity and sexual orientation can’t be taught or instructed in K-3.

As a teacher though I would be careful about talking to any student about another student’s parents. Direct the student to ask his/her own parents.
JesseInTX · 51-55, M
@BohemianBoo this isn’t a school subject it’s about the personal life of another student’s parents. And apparently you missed where I said any other topic pertaining to another student’s parents. Personal lives are not school subjects.
@JesseInTX So I know this is just about you being afraid of the gay, but what you're describing would be a major overhaul of education. Most schools actually do allow kids to discussion their families in the form of class discussions, school projects, homework, and so on. Sometimes, when there's a death in the family of a child it affects the class, and a counselor will come in to have a discussion.
The amount of gymnastics you're gonna have to do is much more than you think.

Oh Billy's not going to have two dads for much longer. They'll be put on a train, and there'll be a camp with showers.

This is where that party is heading.
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@Longpatrol There was a time when I might’ve considered that hyperbole. But not since 1/6/21 and the members of the government who approved of those actions, calling rioters "patriots". Now, I wouldn’t be surprised.
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
@bijouxbroussard I just look at the recent book burnings and the biggest neo-nazi gathering in recent memory as signs that history is repeating it self in the country that was so ardent in the defence of the free world.

I look at the rise of nationalism all over the world and in my neighbourhood.

I'm quite nervous for the future.
zerofuks2give · 41-45, M
I have no idea what this bill is about so I have no opinion on that. But honestly it’s not a first grade teachers job to answer that question. That’s a question that a first grader should be asking their parents imo. Just like if that first grader wanted to know where babies come from, ask your parents 🤷🏻‍♂️
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@zerofuks2give why? Why can't a teacher answer questions with facts?
zerofuks2give · 41-45, M
@ViciDraco And how do you know that teacher is going to answer the question with facts? That teacher could be a homophobe and go off on a homophobic rant for the entire class. It’s not a teachers job to teach my children about these things, it’s mine.
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@zerofuks2give why can't a teacher teach these things? Teachers teach that slavery is wrong. They teach that hurting people is wrong. Why can't they teach that being homophobic is wrong?
SW-User
Religion is already censored in school.
A child was once told they couldn't discuss God creating the world.
The teacher has the option to tell a child to ask his/her parents to explain...

Have you ever disagreed with a lifestyle or values and morals others have? Did it all of a sudden make you a phobic person?
I want the values and morals subjects to be something I instill and not let others make decisions on.
Schools.... public ones for sure.... are going in directions some parents just don't care to follow.

Keep in mind there is more to the whole thing since Billy evidently had a woman mom at some point and this goes into more in depth things dealing with sex and all.
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@SW-User being gay is not about morals or values either though.
SW-User
@ViciDraco That's your opinion.
@BohemianBoo
And I'm glad that the Boomers are dying out. 😝
I agree with much of what you say, generally. But please don’t become guilty of that which you condemn in others—bigotry. Plenty of of "boomers" (myself included) supported the Civil Rights Movement, the fight for women’s rights, LGBT rights and helped bring social changes to the forefront. Don’t assume you have no allies among my generation. 🙁
how should a teacher answer a question from a first grade student about why Billy has two dads and no mom?
How about, 'I don't know."
@Budwick You think saying that some kids have two fathers is provocative?
Budwick · 70-79, M
@BohemianBoo Yes.

You think answering 'I don't know.' isn't good enough?

Tell them to talk to the parents it's not the teachers place to try to explain it.
kodiac · 22-25, M
@ViciDraco i just don't think it's up to teachers to try instill morals or values into kids ,it's a part of parenting not education.
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@kodiac if I didn't know so many terrible parents pushing their bigotry and hatred onto their children I might be inclined to agree. But we need to divorce ourself from this fear of strangers and every family being and island and begin building communities again.
kodiac · 22-25, M
@ViciDraco If it was 50 years ago I'd agree the world is not a safe place now for kids ,in todays world the odds are 50 50 that the teacher is a child molester so little billy needs to be told by a stranger that sex between boys is ok and the grooming begins .
MasterLee · 56-60, M
"Why can't I have a mom and a dad?"

"Why is jimmy so weird?"

"Jimmy says I should wear a dog collar."

"Why does jimmy wear girls clothing and you told him he should chop off his weiner?"

"Why can't we talk about math?"
Tell the kid to ask his parents
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@BohemianBoo give it a rest
Since when and how pansexuality became part of middle school art class is beyond me. I’d be fine with juniors or seniors in high school but this? 🙄 As an addendum this is not a sex ed class and has zero to do with art. I am glad she was fired.

I'll say this. Both parties are about control over others.

It only happens that republicans want far more control over others than the democrats. Control over money of others and control over beliefs of others, it's all about control of others.
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@DeWayfarer So why are people leaving San Francisco in droves?
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@HoraceGreenley you understand how gentrification works, yes? Places people want to live get too expensive to live. So people with money start buying up cheap run down areas and building them up into the next new nice area.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@HoraceGreenley read your out of date statistics again siince it's now a Biden administration!

It's ironic the ones that actually moved have moved back and are fighting the democrats! That's why the party is stronger now in Anaheim than ever before.

Heck they just held a party convention in Anaheim!

A thought... what if the teacher is a homophobic dick? I'd rather explain things to my children the right way. Its my responsibility not someone else thay may mess up their heads and make them feel badly about themselves.
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@SW-User of it were part of formal lessons the would be certain expectations to how it is taught. But the goal of the law is erasure. Pretend these things don't exist.
SW-User
@ViciDraco That's probably true. They do want all non straight people to cease to exist while they are all probably down low themselves or they would be more open and accepting.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
They just have to ignore inconvenient facts and hope they disappear 😟 In Britain, we used to have legislation called section 28 that prohibited the "promotion of homosexuality" by local authorities (who ran most state schools). It was not repealed until 2003 😟
hunkalove · 61-69, M
Why would that even come up in school?
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@hunkalove have you never been around curious children? Have parents never shown up for volunteer work at your school? Or for an open house?
hunkalove · 61-69, M
@ViciDraco No, I'm never around children. But I don't recall ever talking about my parents when I was in school.
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@hunkalove people asked why I didn't have a mother all the time. In my case it was that she was dead. But it came up
Dont worry they are going to get rid of same sex parents anyway. Or put to death the ones that wont divorce.
Why should grade school kids be exposed to homosexuality??
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@Stargazer89 so should we not talk about parents at all? Nobody can discuss their mothers and fathers?
@Stargazer89 exposed to? That sounds dirty.
Children have had homosexual parents and family member for a very very very long time. Children also ask questions and wonder about all sorts of things. It’s not sexual in nature, it’s a concept and an idea they are exposed to when encountering people who live differently than mom and dad. Why should it be a secret?
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
Same way a teacher answers when a kid asks them if there’s a God
“I’m not allowed to answer that question .”
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
@Kwek00 yea you’re right dude. Lol
Kwek00 · 41-45, M
@AthrillatheHunt Asking teachers to not talk about a non-sexual phenomena that excists in their material world. And that is actually a reality for one of their fellow students. Is embaressing. And why is this being brought back from the dustbin of history? Because an intolerant authoritarian segment of religious people just can't live in a world where other people don't share the same value set that they do. So everything they don't like, has to become taboo again, because they are the constant victim of reality that just doesn't want to go back into the closet.
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
@Kwek00 yea you’re right dude .
This is why their claims to support "free speech" are so bogus. If teachers don’t discuss our country’s racist past, so white students won’t feel guilty (why should they ? They weren’t responsible) and we can pretend it didn’t happen. And if teachers avoid any mention of LGBT individuals, we can pretend they don’t exist. 😞
