What do you base your beliefs on

Why do so many people base their beliefs on just the bible. And literary? Why would you not take everything into consideration. Logic and feelings. To me it's like trying to cross the lake in a boat but refusing the paddle. 🤣 And then saying the boat's no good 🙄

Because it is God's word!
Diotrephes · 70-79, M
@Carazaa If Abraham is one of God's favorite human I would rather bunk with Satan. At least Satan tried to save humans and the world from destruction by the God character in the biblical fairy tale.

@Diotrephes No you don't. You want that like you want to have sex with some hotty and regret it afterwards!
My adage is: If it’s not science, it’s superstition.

“Don't you believe in flying saucers, they ask me? Don't you believe in telepathy? — in ancient astronauts? — in the Bermuda triangle? — in life after death?
No, I reply. No, no, no, no, and again no.

One person recently, goaded into desperation by the litany of unrelieved negation, burst out "Don't you believe in anything?"

"Yes", I said. "I believe in evidence. I believe in observation, measurement, and reasoning, confirmed by independent observers. I'll believe anything, no matter how wild and ridiculous, if there is evidence for it. The wilder and more ridiculous something is, however, the firmer and more solid the evidence will have to be.”

@BlueSkyKing you sound just like the person who says the boat's no good but never took the oar. We are emotional Beings. Why deny them now?
@Millerdog So are all mammals. However, humans are pattern seeking creatures that can think in abstract. That is unique. Also we are uncomfortable with being ignorant. Often going with the magic before trying the science. There is a lot we can’t know, but the mysteries that have been solved so far have no magic behind them.
redredred · M
@Millerdog Why conflate emotion with reason when everyday there is demonstrated how emotion clouds our thinking?
Science, life experiences and my education.
DiliMarky · M
@Spunkylama So your saying your education makes your beliefs?
As you grow older, experience comes to replace theoretical rules that were just inculcated into you as a child. And beliefs are meant to evolve in time.
Millerdog · 56-60, M
@EarthlingWise and maybe we develop our own beliefs instead of just accepting the beliefs we are told are true
@Millerdog We have to.
Adstar · 56-60, M
If you believe the Bible is the inspired word of God.. Then you will base your beliefs ( in regard to religion ) on what is revealed in the Bible.. And ""literary"" did you mean to write Literally? if you did, very few Christians believe that the Bible is 100% literal.. The Bible often uses Symbolic writing.. The Mixture of Literal and symbolic in the Bible is, I believe, The way God hides deeper meanings / revelations from people who are not serious about seeking, believing and learning from God..

As for your point about a boat and rowing.. I can see the boat as representing the Bible and the paddling effort a human using their one intellectual abilities to interpret the Bible as they think it should be.. They will get to a destination with all their paddling.. But it will not be the destination God made the boat for them to reach.. The Bible is like a boat and the Holy Spirit that guides the boat is like a rope across the lake, tied to the boat and ending at the exact destination God wants the boat to go to.. Getting into the boat is an act of faith that the One guiding the boat will lead you to the perfect destination.. Some people want to be in control because they cannot trust, they trust in themselves without realizing that they are imperfect not having the mind of God..

I don't think anyone actually just believes what the Bible says; there always has to be interpretation involved, and that involves all the kinds of factors you are mentioning.

I think my beliefs come a lot from my upbringing, plus the workings of my particular mix of emotional and logical thinking on my life experiences and what I have read and learned, which includes the Bible and a lot else.

@NoGamesTolerated Je suis en effet un ami, pas un ennemi, mais si tu veux pas discuter, eh bien, n'en parlons plus.
@SW-User

J'ai dit au revoir, mais je suppose que vous avez besoin du dernier mot. D'accord 👌

Besides like I said your thoughts have absolutely nothing to do with MY reality and I for sure don’t care about what you think of me. I feel sorry that you are deceived and Satan has you right where he wants you to be. Good night!

Pas en toute, j'ai écrit ma réponse et puis ensuite j'ai vu votre "au revoir".

Puis vous avez dit "au revoir" pas "adieu" :)

Bonne nuit à vous.

Evidence.

Of course.
Millerdog · 56-60, M
@newjaninev2 well there still could be one. Humans like to rationalize
newjaninev2 · 56-60, F
@Millerdog One? There could be 50,000,000,000 of the things... in fact, there’s no upper limit.

That’s why we needn’t bother with the postulation. It explains nothing (not even itself) and can be used to produce endless convenient versions as required.

All of which have neither need nor usefulness
Millerdog · 56-60, M
@newjaninev2 for some people perhaps but certainly not all. and not me. but to each their own. i'm cool with that
Because the Bible is the book that tells us where we came from, the history of mankind from the beginning. It tells us where we are going and gives us the roadmap that determines our eternity. It’s more current than tomorrow’s newspaper!
FreestyleArt · 31-35, M
logic and Reasoning alone is not perfect. The Bible is perfection of life not from this world but from the Kingdom of God who is no Equal

Everybody has basis for what they believe in , what ever it is 😌

@sam1992 that's what I'm asking about

Personally I didn't choose anything. God chose me as a vessel.

@NoGamesTolerated If only they knew the joy that comes with opening their hearts to him 😀
@Lichocolati yes indeed! No peace like that of God! The peace that passes all understanding! And joy that comes from above that no man can give or take away!
Lichocolati · 31-35, F
@NoGamesTolerated Amen to that 😀
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
My broad education and life experiences influence my beliefs, but the values begin with an innate sense of compassion which, I believe, is part nature and part nurturing by my parents.
Millerdog · 56-60, M
@dancingtongue but some beliefs are based in the spiritual world
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
@Millerdog And part of my education has been learning about the spiritual world, which no one religion has a patent on. The most relevant parts of various religious are the common themes you find among them, IMHO.
Millerdog · 56-60, M
@dancingtongue true. No one has any patent on any belief. Although some would argue that point. And often do. 😆
Fluffybull · F
I base my beliefs on a variety of things over the years. Some from how I was brought up, from school, from people I've met, subjects I've studied, books, newspapers, personal experience, from life-altering experiences (whether good or bad).
Millerdog · 56-60, M
@Fluffybull at least you have developed your own beliefs
Imsleepy · 31-35
I base my beliefs on logic, personal experience and the knowledge I have. My beliefs are always subject to change if new information is presented or if I have a new or unexplainable experience.
Millerdog · 56-60, M
@Imsleepy yes i am also always trying to let my beliefs grow and change if need be. It's fluid
DiliMarky · M
You should NOT base your beliefs on feelings because they are bad at collecting data on what's happening. Use something else other than your five senses and scientifically prove it.
Millerdog · 56-60, M
@DiliMarky use everything you have
exchrist · 31-35
I choose to believe in my own perception of what the abrahimic religions would be if combined then that merged with a secular rationalism. To benefit all not any one group
spjennifer · 61-69, T
I think that when people base their entire lives on the words in the Buybull it's because they have no moral compass of their own to guide them. The Buybull like any other book of stories can be a guide, it isn't intended to rule your entire life, nor to guide you to hate others because they are different from you or have different beliefs than you do or love differently than you do.
Diotrephes · 70-79, M
@spjennifer If a person followed all of the rules in the Bible he would be the most prolific criminal in history.
Diotrephes · 70-79, M
@BlueSkyKing That is a 100% true statement.

The Word of God.
Historical evidence that speaks to me. Every society that distances itself from the primary belief of God is nature eventually falls as a result of it growing away from its roots.

I take everything I've learned from a myriad of religions, not the the Abrahamic ones and identify more of a Theosophist than anything.

People like believing in something without questioning. It makes life seem less chaotic and complicated. It has downsides though.

Bible, Tradition, Experience, Reason. I like the phrase used by a local religious group: "Life is a journey and thought is required."

I believe the Bible is meant to be read at all times, especially during difficult times:

I wonder why so-called Christian women who claim to read the Bible always ignore one of the primary rules that regulates their behavior?

1 Timothy 2:11-13 (ERV) = "11 A woman should learn while listening quietly and being completely willing to obey. 12 I don’t allow a woman to teach a man or tell him what to do. She must listen quietly, 13 because Adam was made first. Eve was made later."
