Once a Christian.

I was brought up to go to Church and Sunday School and at the age of eight i made a profession of faith at seventeen I was baptised but as the years passed I have back slidden and although I attend Church I have little interest in spiritual things, even my language has a lot to be desired, sometimes I wish that I could get back to being a Christian, but I find it very difficult.

Remember the story of the prodigal son in the Bible. When he came back to his father, the father was more than happy to see him even though he had sinned and welcomed him back with open arms and even threw him a party. How much more Jesus loves you and welcomes you back. Don't let that devil tell you any different. And if you need any more help, you can always write me. ❤🤗🙏

@LadyGrace Thanks.

@Goldenboy you're welcome
If you believe that we’ve all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God; that Jesus Christ is God born as a man who lived a sinless life for the purpose of being the perfect sacrifice to take on all our sin debts; that he died on the cross but rose three days later because he conquered the grave; and that, if you accept his sacrifice for you personally, you are Saved and will be with him in Heaven someday; then you’re a Christian. Even when we backslide (we all do sometimes). It might help to try to pray at least once a day. I don’t know how you pray, but it doesn’t have to be lengthy or fancy.
A quick, “Lord, please rekindle the desire in my heart for you.”
If you can bring yourself to read the Bible again, that’d help you a lot.

I pray you’re able to turn your focus back to the Lord. I’d be weary of trying to replace him with other forms of spirituality. You’d find yourself even further from the Lord, and if that’s not what you want, then…
LadyGrace · 70-79
You can go back. God has never left you. He's always waiting for you. He wants you to come back. He will welcome you with open arms of love. The devil will tell you Jesus doesn't want you, and has forgotten about you but he never has and he never will. You can go to him right now and he will be so happy you came back.

You made a proffesion of faith, was it genuine?

Also, sadly, we all backslide, when passion is low continue reading the Bible every day, even if it is less than what you usually read.

I cannot emphasise the importance of fellowship with other Christians at church, we all need eachother!

Lastly, if you have examined yourself and you truly do believe that Christ shed his blood on the cross and took the punishment for our sin, remember that God in his wisdom does not base our salvation on our good works and performance but solely by faith and by his infinite grace!

Try separating Christ's teachings and their philosophical/theological underpinnings from the brick and mortar churches and other trappings that claim to represent Christianity. Frequently, particularly in these days when some denominations have become so involved with politics rather than spirituality, there is a total disconnect, which may be what is troubling you.

Thomas Jefferson took the Bible and a pair of scissors and cut out everything that was not directly attributable to Christ through one of the original disciples who were there. He was left with a small pamphlet. It is called the Jefferson Bible and is in the Library of Congress. Unlike a current Bible printed in China carrying the name of someone who promises high tariffs on products from China and is offering it under his name for ten-fold over what it cost to print.

Actually they were prophecies in the Old Testament.

You can’t make that stuff up!
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
@Pfuzylogic No, you can't. Which is why the early Christians for several centuries borrowed from the Old Testament and various pagan celebrations/beliefs to embellish the back story of Jesus Christ -- not Immanuel, as prophesied -- rather than simply embracing his own teachings and philosophy.

Then there is the Holy Spirit which divides those of Faith from those lacking.
The Holy Spirit is the divine inspiration for the ancient prophets and makes for one cohesive plan of Salvation since the fall of Adam. God makes a wonderful story for mankind to understand themselves. Otherwise we would be abandoned in our brokenness.

There are spiritual paths that don't involve religion. If you are looking for meaning in your life, religion isn't the place to find answers.
Goldenboy · M
@hunkalove @hunkalove Where do you suggest that I find meaning?
hunkalove · 61-69, M
@Goldenboy Meditation? Maybe just living in the moment and paying attention to what is going on around you?
Pfuzylogic · M
God is very loving and long suffering and will always be there when you need him with your sincere heart…always!
“There are, after all, atheists who say they wish the fable were true but are unable to suspend the requisite disbelief, or who have relinquished belief only with regret. To this I reply: who wishes that there was a permanent, unalterable celestial despotism that subjected us to continual surveillance and could convict us of thought-crime, and who regarded us as its private property even after we died? How happy we ought to be, at the reflection that there exists not a shred of respectable evidence to support such a horrible hypothesis.”

You can't unlearn things, sometimes people forget that. You can however always learn new things, also sometimes overlooked. Does it make sense that could be many paths to the same destination?
Sometimes when I am in a low place I wish so much that life was as easy as trusting in Jesus or something like that.

But the fact of the matter is that, prayer and faith doesn't actually achieve anything. There's no results from it because it isn't real and I know that. There's no such thing as angels and ghosts. The Bible was written by men not god etc etc.

So I had to look elsewhere. However looking elsewhere I found alot of great techniques for managing stress and see how it can be possible to be totally ok no matter what even without the idea of God.
LadyGrace · 70-79
@OrionInTheNight However, looking elsewhere is not the same as attending to where your soul shall spend eternity. It's important to plan for that, to make sure we end up in the right place. If we neglect our soul, and don't make that choice, it shall stay separated from God forever. It's in the Bible. There is a choice that must be made, so that our soul goes to the right place. And yes, prayers do work. Perhaps you have not seen any prayers answered, but I have seen many prayers answered, including sparing my own life and my daughter's life. I have seen God transform many lives, by the Holy Spirit, when people invite and accept Jesus into their heart and life as Savior. This is something that must be prepared for now because there's no changing our minds once we cross over into eternity. This is something we don't want to get wrong.

I've fallen away from the church and religion. I just read the bible now. I find it inspiring and comforting. I felt nothing going to church. Studying the bible is very rewarding to me. Whether you believe it or not, it's a very good book.

For what it's worth, God aka Tao, aka Amida, aka Reality-as-is.......does NOT backslide.

My eyes being hindered by blind passions,
I cannot perceive the light that grasps me;
Yet the great compassion, without tiring,
Illumines me always
(Shinran, of the Buddhist Pure Land Faith)

Or from Mother Julian of Norwich:-

If there be anywhere on earth a lover of God who is always kept safe, I know nothing of it, for it was not shown to me. But this was shown: that in falling and rising again we are always kept in that same precious love.

Faith NOT works. And even faith is given, gift.

Ask and you shall receive
Goldenboy · M
@MPath37 I often question if I ever was a Christian in the first place, I know people who have never faultered in their Christian faith and I envy them.
MPath37 · 51-55, M
@Goldenboy you have to really, truly, honestly choose, because it is your choice. If you don't freely choose it, it doesn't reflect who you are.
So, ask yourself what you really do believe.
@Goldenboy none of that stuff is real, so I wouldn't envy them at all

@Goldenboy 🤔maybe like any interest religious or other sorts things can loose its appeal or you just move away from it but if you want too rekindle your connection too the church there is nothing stopping you i suppose
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
What is holding you back? Past experience or someone in the church turned you off or school taught you something that counters Christianity? Just curious not judging.
Kstrong · 56-60, F
You cant loose salvation, God doesnt move, Hes always there, we're the ones who've moved... Hes the same yesterday, today, forever.... its satan that tries to keep us away.... don't let him win.... i know as i struggle the same
zonavar68 · 56-60, M
You don't need to be religious or go to church to be a proper person
Why difficult?
Goldenboy · M
@LadyGrace Thankyou for your comment, you have given me a lot to think about, maybe all is not lost.
LadyGrace · 70-79
@Goldenboy believe me, and trust God. All is not lost! That's just what the devil wants you to think but it's not and it never will be. God always goes for us to come back.
@Goldenboy no one can be good enough for God. But you can still be a Christian, and your works won't disqualify you from that, only you're heart
