Favorite/ worse thing about sports

What is it the most that makes you love/hate sports!?
What sport is favorite/least favorite?
nedkelly · 61-69, M
NFL - they make a tackle and run around like a chook with its head cut off

I have got to the stage watching soccer is terrible, a players gets tackled and falls around the ground like he is actually injured
RedBaron · M
@smiler2012 Does anyone outside of Australia watch that? I'm not sure I have ever seen it.
smiler2012 · 61-69

The whole thing of fan loyalty to professional sports teams makes no sense to me at all. The team that supposedly represents a particular city is just a group of people from anywhere at all hired by a business that happens to be located there. Any member of the team may end up on another team later on. There's nothing real to it.

I also dislike that sports is one of the few remaining areas of society where gender matters. Having separate male and female teams just doesn't make sense in today's world, and they need to start defining the specific physical criteria that they are looking for, relevant to the specific sport, instead.
SW-User
@RedBaron Are all the male players at the highest levels?
RedBaron · M
@SW-User No, and a few women have played at, I think, the small college level.
SW-User
@RedBaron so that's fine for my point, then. Base the choice of players on their skills by all means, but not on prior assumptions about who can do what.
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
my least favorite thing is when corporate america forks over billions to sponsor the US world cup team in Qatar, for product placement rights. and then the Qatari government starts arresting gays and adulterers.

why didn't we withdraw once we say this was where they were headed. is the money actually worth it?

Budweiser and Visa, i'm looking at you
Slade · 56-60, M
@SusanInFlorida they fucked Budweiser and cut off all beer there
SusanInFlorida · 31-35, F
@Slade budweiser still gets all sorts of in stadium adverstising, which appears on TV too. You lie down with dogs, expect to get fleas.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
Why are so many things on SW so binary - love or hate?

I have no "favourite" sports but neither do I dislike any, with the exception of boxing.

Boxing to me is an absurd, dangerous activity whose sole aim is for one to batter the other into unconsciousness in the fight. For some, it leads to or encourages Alzheimer's developing in later years.

(That disease is also recognised as an effect among former professional footballers, from years of heading the ball, especially in the days of heavy leather balls. I think it is now banned or at least discouraged in school and youth-club football.)
'

I do though utterly oppose the so-called "sports" or trophy shooting of wild animals that still happens in some countries, like Malta, France, Spain and Norway; for no reason other than killing them. Not to eat, or for genuine culls, just blood-lust. It, and hunting by dogs, has been outlawed in the UK for some decades now, but the informal, more brutal forms still occur.
reflectingmonkey · 51-55, M
the only sports that I can watch are extreme sports like extreme DH biking, extreme downhill skiing, surfing, kayaking, that sort of stuff. all the sports that people commonly watch are so boring to me, I cant get myself motivated by hoping someone will throw a ball in a basket or shoot a puck in a net or kick a ball in a net all to get higher points. I don't care.

I have never been interested in competition sports ( unless you count the several years in which I played in a local-league skittles team, and played not very well) so don't really have a favourite or least favourite, apart from intensely disliking boxing.

Apart from the play though I do not like the way that the "big" sports have been so prostituted by money, TV and politics.

I was not the only Briton to be glad to see fail, that American bid to create a hermetic "super-league" in British and European football; a minority game in the USA but seen as a foreign sport ripe for outright exploitation by a few rich spivs - I've no idea who they were, nor if they knew anything about the game itself.
calicuz · 56-60, M
Favorite: NFL Football it's just a great game

Least Favorite: NASCAR, it's not as interesting as it used to be. They're trying to build hype where none was needed. Now there is the "NASCAR Playoffs" WTH is that?!!!!
Commentators.. wish they’d just stfu and call the game

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout I couldn’t agree more. Every sport the commentators are speculating on the percentage of blah blah blah

Sports has a place in learning team work. That's about it.

Personally I believe all Professional sports should be banned. Entertainment can be just as easily had on the non professional sports.

What sport would I support? Does it really matter? Most have been professionalized which is what I despise.

They have taken an example from Roman gladiators and justify cruelty in order to make money instead of death.
SW-User
@DeWayfarer if it was for competition, humanity would of never made it. So making sports “professional “ only makes sense. I don’t think they should make more money than the president or anybody but they deserve it. Work hard at your craft and survive the survival of the fittest
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@SW-User I'm not against competition. Never said I was. I did say I was for non professional sports.

Sports is not a craft! It's a tool to learn team work. Nothing more.
Lilymoon · F
I love it cause it's live and exciting.

I hate it cause it's all about the money now and it's probably fixed to a good extent. 🤷‍♀️
JustNik · 51-55, F
I’ve always been clumsy and too attached to my personal space, so I’ve never made a good athlete. Used to love the hell out of a shockingly awful game of tennis though. 😂 As a spectator, I admire all those people with skills, as well as the obvious dedication to honing them, although I don’t care much for watching on TV. I prefer the energy and fun in person, so when they’re on TV I just watch as I walk through or stop for a spell now and then.
Ynotisay · M
I played at a pretty high level so I'd say, for athletes, of any age, it's about reaching goals, taking direction and learning to win and, more importantly, lose. The idea of youth sports leagues not keeping score is so wrong in so many ways.

For the general public I think the idea of not knowing the outcome is unique to anything that could be considered entertainment. The purest form of drama. And with professional sports, when you're watching athletes at the peak of human performance I think that's a real draw. Humans have always wanted to go farther, faster, higher, etc. Sports is a gauge for that.

Least favorite thing is how people go way over the top when it comes to professional sports. They identify with teams and players in a way that's a little bizarre to me. I think they need to remember that they're passive observers.

I also think that ticket prices for professional sports is horrific. My heart always breaks for the young kids who live to compete but have no chance of seeing professionals play in person.
What I love about sports is how it brings the world together, just like art and music does. What I don't like about it is if they involve in it greed, religion, politics, and hate.

My favorite sport: Figure skating

No offense to those who like it but this is a sport(Curling) I find really funny 🤭☺️
@ArishMell oh no question about it, some skill is definitely needed to do that.
Ynotisay · M
@LilMissAnonyMOUSE I did a lot of work for a while with Olympic figure skaters. I had a passing interest in it before I started which pretty much means the Olympics every four years. The first day I got down to the ice for a training session I could NOT BELIEVE what I was seeing. The speed, strength, guts and commitment was absolutely mind blowing. And that entire "skating is silly and for girls" thing went right out the window. They are SERIOUS athletes.
@Ynotisay I totally agree with you, they are serious athletes. Figure skating training starts at a very very young age, around 6 , 7 years old. Its many years of commitment to want to get to the top and competition level. I wanted to be a figure skater but life took me towards a different path, so my love for it has been something I've had for a long time.

The rugby union team I support represents 125 years of its city's history and is one of the most important assets of our region. Although there are still inequalities, it takes women's and disabled sport seriously and spends serious amounts of money on parallel teams.

What I hate most of all about sport is homogenisation and the tendency of the media to measure everything through the same lens (ie. equating success with speed, power and 'excitement').

I absolutely hate politics in sports. That is not the place .
SW-User
I have always liked the competition aspect of sports. From a very young age I have liked to compete in sports. It’s my idea of fun. In a lot of ways it’s carried into adulthood for me.

What I don’t like is liberals interjecting politics into sports. When I was growing up it was nothing like it is today. I would say since around 2014 you started seeing them talk about things like women’s rights, rights for homosexuals, black this black that during the sport telecasts. The average viewer especially the average masculine thinking male viewer doesn’t care about that stuff. Take the NFL for example whose core viewership is predominantly conservative caucasians from middle America.

The viewership amongst all the sports is actually a lot lower than what I was back then as well. Much of it has to do with the current social climate and how sport has been politicized
Thodsis · 51-55, M
Sport is what happens when a game is taken too seriously.

Games are fun to watch occasionally but get dull if you aren't actually playing them.

Just as a PS - Shouting at a TV has no effect on the game that you're viewing...
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Thodsis Our Mam used to shout at the telly, but not by anything on the football pitch as she watched for the play not the team or result. Instead it was at the inane things the "experts" say afterwards.

If one came out with something like, "Well, he is nearly twenty-eight"", Mam would exclaim, "Poor old man!".

She played hockey at well past that age, and tennis and badminton into late middle-age, at amateur club level. While many outdoor-pursuits enthusiasts (cavers, climbers, walkers, sailors, divers, etc.) are active in their 70s and even 80s.
Thodsis · 51-55, M
@ArishMell She sounds fun.

I like college football for the tradition and crazy plays, and basketball playoffs because the skill level is so insane.
