What was your favorite game at recess?

I grew up in the inner city and we only had a giant cement lot to play in. No swings, no slides, nothing. NOW, they do have many additions at my old elementary school incuding playground equipment.

But back then we had to bring our own chalk and jump ropes. I loved Hop scotch!! Loved jumping in the center of two people holding a jump rope too. Those were fun times :)
I’m a hopscotch girl too and I liked it when we had the thick chalk, not the measly little sticks.

Catching grasshoppers in the field, or picking little plants
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@Coralmist same, I loved that stuff. And climbing trees....

Too bad you got to all that a little late though
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@caPnAhab I know.. I wish I had had those fun moments near trees. I now live in a neighborhood with many more trees than when I was little, so I make up for it now. :)
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@Coralmist that's good. I'm glad

Hopscotch was where it was at when you had blank concrete before you. There’s a spot downtown where they painted a really pretty and colorful hopscotch spot for kids. I still hop on it when I’m there though. Had to teach my kids how to play it recently because it was something they never played at recess. But every time recess came around for me I ran to the tetherball. Absolutely loved playing that.

Hopscotch and skipping were definitely my favourites too. As we grew older we moved away from the centre of the playground to the school fields where we practised gymnastics. And when we were teenagers we looked for secluded places where we could hold hands and kiss 😊
Our playround was large, but limited. Little funding left us to our creativity, and own devices come recess time.

The tired wooden jungle gym beyond the hill, was the fortress.
From there, we launched a thousand raids into "enemy" camps below. Against schoolyard rivals who'd become the chosen foes of the day.
Its tower -- the parapet: where watchmen stood guard while we traded lunches, read comics, and rested.

Before long, the thundering of little feet and a cry from above, rallied us to defend our perimeter. The dusty sand box provided smoke screen cover.
To a rag-tag platoon fanning out in a pincer maneuver, hemming the savage grade two's in between the northern fence, and a no-man's land beyond.

We took prisoners, and traded spies.

Some of the more legendary battles found us in the principle's office. Told, that though we were at war; fighting was not allowed.

With passion, we recounted broken peace treaties, tales of treachery and betrayal by brothers.
But the distinguished woman was not moved. She'd seen another battle, of which we'd never heard; nor could comprehend. Where iron rained onto houses and cobblestone; far away from these playing fields, in a land called Britain.

That playground is smaller now. But its memory and adventures live on. Large in the heart, and on the mind.
Of carefree, happy days, that knew no pain; where imagination couldn't be confined to a yard.

Touch football. It was crazy because each side had way too many kids.

About a decade ago population and enrollment declined, so they consolidated schools. My elementary school was torn down, replaced by yuppie condos.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
certainly loved jump roping, freeze tag.
Also loved dodge ball, but that was in gym class
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
@iamnikki jump rope! I forgot about that. I just loved it especially double Dutch
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@Jenny1234 yess, I meant double Dutch. I wonder if I can still do it
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
Tetherball. Didn’t did good till someone got hit in the face and had a bloody nose.
Handball and other sports such as soccer, rugby, cricket or shooting hoops

@SW-User im sorry, I don't understand the reference 🤷

@OogieBoogie he is being crude and lude. Since he couldn't have been in preschool in the 1980s if his age is correct!
@DeWayfarer 😂😅
Heartlander · 80-89, M
A big concrete slab with a half dozen basketball backboards and goals. Also 4 handball courts. No sidewalls or back wall, so it was handball played with tennis balls that slowed the game down to a manageable speed. Real handballs are much harder, have no fuzzy skin and have far too much bounce for just one wall.

Sneak of to the shack for bongs…
theoldschoola · 46-50, M
@theoldschoola That was strictly for gym class for us.

Basketball 🏀
Honestly, just pretending to be fictional characters. Like, I remember when Harry Potter was really popular, me and the other kids use to pretend our pencils were wands.
Sidewinder · 36-40, M
Mostly roleplaying with my friends.

But during indoor recesses on rainy days, chess.
Sidewinder · 36-40, M
@NativePortlander1970 Not exactly Dungeons and Dragons, per se.

My friends and I would play-act various story scenarios from movies, computer games, historical events, stuff like that.
@Sidewinder So more of a drama club geek
Sidewinder · 36-40, M
@NativePortlander1970 Yeah, something like that.
robertsnj · 56-60, M
oh wow fun question! dodgeball. But not played that often. Played some handball and touch football.
@robertsnj I was amazing at dodgeball. I would taunt the other team, because I knew most of them wanted a legitimate outlet to throw things at me, anyway. So they'd focus on trying to hit me, while my teammates with better aim would hit them.
robertsnj · 56-60, M
@LordShadowfire that makes one of us. I was ok, but had fun playing
@robertsnj I feel like everybody but the absolute worst players at least had a good time with it. And maybe even them, who knows?
Caned4doz · 61-69, M
In primary school, I and a few mates played brandy. One boy would have a tennis ball and the object of the game was for him to hit one of the other boys with the ball as hard as he could. The idea was to leave a red mark from the ball (hence why called 'brandy'...as in branding). If he managed to hit another boy, then that boy had control of the ball. Great fun, but some of the teachers on yard duty disapproved saying it was dangerous, we could hit someone in the face. Never happened.
Getting from the end of class to the start of class without getting bullied - great game...
Adrift · 61-69, F
Jacks, jump rope. Double Dutch was the most fun and challenging.
Pfuzylogic · M
Dodgeball but with a softer ball so it can be caught.
Chasings,
handstand competitions
Hopscotch
The monkey bars
Swing jump competitions
And trying to claim the fort from the boys who had cooties.

@Bexsy That sounds painful.

Teather ball.
Our tetherball was dominated by the karate school kids that liked to show off that they could do round house kicks, but most of us preferred wallball or foursquare.
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@NativePortlander1970 I always rode on the tether ball until I hit my head on the pole. Some time after that, I remember the school removed the ball... coincidence? Can't say
