What was your favorite game at recess?

I grew up in the inner city and we only had a giant cement lot to play in. No swings, no slides, nothing. NOW, they do have many additions at my old elementary school incuding playground equipment.

But back then we had to bring our own chalk and jump ropes. I loved Hop scotch!! Loved jumping in the center of two people holding a jump rope too. Those were fun times :)

Our playround was large, but limited. Little funding left us to our creativity, and own devices come recess time.

The tired wooden jungle gym beyond the hill, was the fortress.
From there, we launched a thousand raids into "enemy" camps below. Against schoolyard rivals who'd become the chosen foes of the day.
Its tower -- the parapet: where watchmen stood guard while we traded lunches, read comics, and rested.

Before long, the thundering of little feet and a cry from above, rallied us to defend our perimeter. The dusty sand box provided smoke screen cover.
To a rag-tag platoon fanning out in a pincer maneuver, hemming the savage grade two's in between the northern fence, and a no-man's land beyond.

We took prisoners, and traded spies.

Some of the more legendary battles found us in the principle's office. Told, that though we were at war; fighting was not allowed.

With passion, we recounted broken peace treaties, tales of treachery and betrayal by brothers.
But the distinguished woman was not moved. She'd seen another battle, of which we'd never heard; nor could comprehend. Where iron rained onto houses and cobblestone; far away from these playing fields, in a land called Britain.

That playground is smaller now. But its memory and adventures live on. Large in the heart, and on the mind.
Of carefree, happy days, that knew no pain; where imagination couldn't be confined to a yard.
