My sister in law did it and it turned out ok for her.
I would make sure to background check them and get references first.

Not really. Because if you get someone in there that you don't like you may not be able to get them out even with the police. But if you're going to, I think it would be okay as long as you make sure you have references first and check them out before you say okay and just tell them you're taking applications. I would rent to an older person if I were you. Make out an application they can fill out even one page with all their information on it and references. Their place of work etc and then you better have a contract with rules on it and have them sign it. I'm telling you you better do it for your own good. That's the only way to do it. Even if it's just one page. I wouldn't allow smoking or drinking. If you could do a background check.

@LadyGrace and a lot of time they are looking for someone who has paid the deposits etc and just want an easy way to move it. So many are being evicted due to not paying their rent that if you don’t know someone really well and how they manage their money you could get stuck with a problem.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
No. Never know what a roommate will bring to your home, other people that could steal or whatever. Or bedbugs or eat your food etc. I value my privacy too much. I heard too many roommate stories from students to make me seriously consider it. After my daughter moved out of my two-bedroom apartment I thought it would be a good way to split the rent and save some money but I never went through with it. Privacy and not having to deal with other people’s problems or habits or disturbing my sleep etc. made me think it was better to just live alone.

Our house has been more like a hotel at times. Both my sons have had their live in girlfriends there. One was American, stayed four months, paid rent. We also had one of my sons’ friends there, when he was not getting with his parents. Most stayed there for free. The cost of living was much cheaper then.

Yes, we rent out our converted double garage into a relatives accommodation to a young disabled woman, water, electricity and internet all included, she is very quiet
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@OriginalNedKelly with the cost of housing in Australia I imagine you would have no problem finding someone to rent that and probably a lot of decent single people would be glad to find it too.

@cherokeepatti Yes, many people would like to have a place to live, she is a very nice young lady, makes no noise and is very clean and has a black cat

would really depend on the tenants. whoever owned the house before us apparently did just that. The lady next door has roomies/tenants too. I'm sure it helps with expenses if done right.

Well... I only have one bedroom, so my criteria would be very strict.
Examples:
Can not be female
Can not be straight male
Can not be a transphobe
Must be ok with sharing the bed with a transman and a cat
Must enjoy cuddling another man
Must have romantic feelings towards roommate, and he having the same feelings for you
Basically: unless it's someone willong to be my gay boyfriend, I wouldn't "rent it out" for anyone

@TheRealBarbossa it would take a long "will" indeed. Good luck with that.

Keep odors to a minimum in your living quarters. Keep everything photo quality clean neat and not cluttered.Someone will want it, get people to help you ask around. Be as good as it gets with keeping your word and make sure you dont ask too much like most others. Aim for security for yourself more than that easier life you deserve, no snark scouts honor.

Nope. Been there & I'd much rather struggle alone than to depend on a roomie.
exexec · 70-79, C
We have had relatives stay with us for extended periods at no charge, so renting would not be a huge change for us.
Kathleen23 · 46-50, FNew
It’s depending on the house or the person cos some people can’t leave alone
FreeorLonely · 51-55, F
Nope

We rented our attic one year to a pair of dental students. It worked wonderfully
Maturebate · 70-79, M
I would not let that put you off. Test the market! You will be surprised!
HowtoDestroyAngels · 46-50, M
Yeah, as long as they were nice to my cat and maybe smoked me up every once and awhile.
