Actually, the size of the deficit is immaterial. The deficit is one of the cornerstones of the American financial system. The sale of government bonds provide a safe and secure investment with a guaranteed rate of return. If the government could no longer redeem the securities it could simply say = "Sorry, too bad" and start over. It is under no real obligation to redeem its securities. Therefore, there is no limitation to how large the national debt can be as long as people and organizations and foreign countries continue to buy the securities.

@Diotrephes And if we did default on the debt, where would the money for deficit spending come from? Higher taxes, nobody is going to buy the bonds in round two. There are estimates that taxes would have to be increased 200% to sustain the current level of spending and pay off the debt. Personally, I would like to see almost all spending cut until the budget is balanced and debt reduced.

Also, break up your sentences into separate paragraphs representing the next idea, for readability. That way you won't bore and alienate the reader, and it helps build credibility in your argument. Otherwise the reader, and especially those you're trying to convince, will lose interest and worse - not even believe you.
