JD Vance shouldn’t have been there.
It's shameful to try to humiliate a foreign leader on live TV. I’m glad Zelensky stood his ground. I have more respect for him more now than ever.
What were we expecting? Have him cave, bow down and be thankful for all the insults he was receiving while his country is being invaded!? Make that make sense.
ididntknow · 51-55, M
@eMortal you totally don’t understand the situation
Slicker24 · 26-30
@eMortal I agree that jD Vance shouldn't even have been there. should have been Back heading over the senate like a vice president is supposed to. Now, As far as his country being invaded, they did that to themselves hundreds of years back. A large percentage of people living in the Crimean peninsula are ethnically Russian, they have lived there hundreds of years. The Ukrainian government let the Russians come in and build huge military bases, they did it to themselves.

Add another ring to the circus this conflict has been. Ukraine cannot win without risking broader war and a deal is the only way this ends anytime soon. Zelensky does tend to play both ends against the middle in front of the media.

Not happy about the way this went .. but at same time, rather tired of the constant shade thrown at the US. Even worse when it is alongside the sense of entitlement to another serving of our resources, regardless of the country seeking it.
jehova · 31-35, M
Ukraine needs our help! America would not have won its revolution without France's(the next youngest democratic republic) help.
Ameerica is still in the middle east despite significant evidence 9-11 was an inside job; and almost assuradely (exclusively for oil.
If we want the worlds youngest democracy (ukraine) to trumph over Russian agression. Ukraine needs our help. If ukraine had oil; we would never leave.
Unfortunately bc of Americas extrvagant spending in the middle east; the money needed for this conflict to continue simply isnt there. Thus to pay the bills Americas would do best to get Europe and other global partners to take over this conflict and support ukraine.
If America were to mass produce petroleum oil from hemp. The funding for this war would be plentiful. Gas prices would reduce and ukraine wouldnt be as necesssary. Instead America stuck in ww2 mentality, chooses to protect the world by spending money, it should be using on itself (never fully paying its debts). Which leads its debtors to attack others.

Do you see this too?

@MarmeeMarch says
is surrounding the Motherland by countries that can attack quickly.
DUUUDE!!!
(1) NATO is a DEFENSIVE ALLIANCE. NATO doesn't fight unless attacked. Putin liked this idea so much he asked to join NATO back in 2000.
“Putin said: ‘When are you going to invite us to join Nato?’ And [Robertson] said: ‘Well, we don’t invite people to join Nato, they apply to join Nato.’ And he said: ‘Well, we’re not standing in line with a lot of countries that don’t matter.’”

(2) In the modern world, attacks happen with bombs and missiles and paratroopers. We had no borders with Iraq when we overwhelmed it! This talk of "surrounding" has been obsolete for decades.

(3) There is no self defense by Russia when Russia attacks first. Without the conditions described in UN Charter article 51 Russia would have needed to build a case for self defense using diplomatic initiatives and the UN. Russia didn't bother to build a case. Russia attacked first, and shredding the treaty like tRump wants to amounts to appeasement.

(4) Why are you apologizing for Putin? You know he's the thug who murders Russian journalists and critics who oppose him. Why do you apologize for Putin? Why do you defend him??

A train wreck of three egos more concerned with their macho images than anything else. I'm more willing to accept Zelenskyy's attire -- it WAS his formal wear (black rather olive; trident like a brand name rather than the Ukrainian flag), plus, as an actor, he knows a lot of his support domestically and abroad is based on his preferred "uniform" of crewnecks rather than being a "suit" not affected by the war all about him.

Trump and Vance were looking for a reason to jettison talks while playing to the MAGA crowd, imho. It feels like the old bait & switch -- excuse me, Art of the Deal -- tactics. Someone should remind the two that when Churchill came begging, they met halfway in the Atlantic and it was Lend/LEASE not Provide/GIMMEE. Zelenskyy already had nixed the earlier offer of nothing but an inflated credit payment for half their mineral rights. Yet they obviously must have sweetened the deal to share the revenues from half the mineral rights -- which already had been announced -- and some sort of agreement on further military support to lure him to Washington for a photo op, then rolled out the same old GIMME agreement.

At least imho. We may never know. Other than there were no winners west of the Urals.
DanielsASJ · 36-40, M
It was where it was supposed to be headed. Both Trump and Zekensky wanted it that way. President Trump wanted to show that true face of Zelensky to the people of USA and Ukraine. President Zelensky wanted to exhibit his struggle to the people of USA.

I think Trump is a smart man who is trying to take back what USA spent on Ukraine. Russia wants to expand its territories too.

Trump knows that China is no 1 ally of Russia but Trump knows some realpolitik that normally, nations are friends with neighbour*'s neighbour but not neighbour exactly. So China-Russia alliance is a false alliance. Trump is trying to pull Russia out of this alliance. Reasons could be many -

Trump is getting Russia a good deal.

USA will be getting its rare earth minerals which USA does not have.

Russia will not have to be dependent on China that much

USA might use Soft power of cultural assimilation to get Russia out of this Russia - China alliance

Only country competetive to USA will be China without many allies.

Vance is trying to score some extra points by being vocal.

Not sure why they had a public meeting. Zelensky took on a 20 “man” ambush with no problem. Someone complained about him not wearing a suit while elon can goof on them in any apparel.
This will help Ukraine not with anything trump does but the EU/rest of NATO will back them up quicker.

trump/Vance were very disrespectful

It was great it's about time the American President has American interest at heart. Anyone who is pushing for war then eventually world war three. Is someone that both knows nothing and won't be going to fight or get blown up shot up etc or send their kids off to do that. Sorry not sorry but I don't want my son's going off to fight that crap. My husband has served in combat and knows what it's like and doesn't want them or anyone else or their kids to have to. Plus all the waste fraud and abuse with the money. What's the strategy to either win or end the war? Or continuous war for a no winner zero sum game? To make some assholes rich? Zelensky during Biden years came begging and accusing and attacking America and Congress in America sorry not sorry we aren't your sucker nation. Oh also don't give a flying fuck about what some worthless douchebag Europeans think most are bucking futz and like having sex with androgynous children like macron and Mr macron for example
specman · 51-55, MVIP
I keep seeing the words about Ukraine being an ally! Ukraine has never been a ally of the United States or have they?
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
@specman Yikes... no, but it is related. Diplomatic relations usually indicate nations who want relations with each other, whether they are aligned or not. The USA has diplomatic relations with most countries.

For example, the USA had diplomatic with the racist South Africa that Elon grew up in and under internal pressure broke off diplomatic relations at the time because of their apartheid policies. Likewise, the USA used to have diplomatic relations with Iran before it turned terrorist. Then diplomatic relations were stopped. Alternatively, the USA has diplomatic relations with Russia, but up until trump, Russia was not an ally.
@specman If your source is the mainstream media... it would be reasonable to expect that they might not fully know and understand the difference.

I mean, we are using language here that hasn't really been this mainstream since WWII - and most reporters today weren't even born back then.

In looking at what is happening (the US is helping to supply Ukraine with weapons - something that is usually only done among allies), and considering that they're trying to get news out as fast as possible to keep it "current"... they're not fact checking for accuracy right away - and then, even if they do, it's too late by then because it's already out there and other news agencies have picked up on the misinformation and shared it themselves.

This is why we are encouraged to consume a broad range of media, as well as because the broader range is good for helping you to determine your own views without bias

@specman we have a leech

[Looks like] Zellenskiy says winning the Ukrainian war is necessary and possible as long as Europe and America are willing to spend themselves broke and die for their freedom because Obama and Biden, who basically taunted Putin into starting a war are getting their agreed to 10% kickbacks.

If you agree with me hit the heart moji
SteelHands · 61-69, M
@DailyFlash Yeah good idea we can call it the Treaty of Versailles 2.

Because the former soviet union wasn't in there from 45-83 and none of those houses or roads were built with Russian ruples, right?

Or wazitt.?

It was the day that America decided to turn its back on its European allies and align itself with Russia. It’s their choice.
@Sterler45 Trump might be right in that we are not ready for war, though... our recent efforts might be too little and way too late - unless we can form allies with other countries beyond the US.
Sterler45 · 36-40, M
@HootyTheNightOwl Exactly, sideline the US as that country isn’t an ally anymore.

Zelensky did the right thing. He was the only adult in the room during this staged event. Marco Rubio sitting slumped next to Sidekick J D Vance made the team of trump-vance-rubio look like a triad of losers who were bullied when they were young and now have the resources (of the USA) to bully someone else. Except the world got to see how effeminate they really are.

As far as the global implications, Ukraine would have been worse off by kowtowing to trump's negotiation on behalf of Putin. So, this is less than ideal, but the consequences of following trump would be even more dire. Everything trump touches turns to sh*t... even this sh*t show of a conference.
JamesBugman · 56-60, T
You mean the voice of Putin and Zelenskyy. Trump doesn't have any thoughts of his own, he only mimics what others tell him. I am surprised he didn't have Zelenskyy hung from the nearest tree for some made up Russian story.

@ididntknow yes! Americans said nothing about that being wrong or illegal, like they find aggression normal. People asking "what about peace?"were labeled Putin bots and we were like that Communist in the USA - nobody. Non person.

US is breaking up the old alliances and creating a new (and uh, likely very unstable) coalition that's in opposition to the liberal democracies.

Ukraine is fucked by this and need to find the way out of this with the fewest major losses.

Trump humiliating Zelensky is entirely about making noise and drama for its own sake since his job is to be a distraction.
