@specman Apparently, they were an ally upon the abolition of the USSR...
The United States established diplomatic relations with Ukraine in 1991, following its independence from the Soviet Union.

@specman Yikes... no, but it is related. Diplomatic relations usually indicate nations who want relations with each other, whether they are aligned or not. The USA has diplomatic relations with most countries.
For example, the USA had diplomatic with the racist South Africa that Elon grew up in and under internal pressure broke off diplomatic relations at the time because of their apartheid policies. Likewise, the USA used to have diplomatic relations with Iran before it turned terrorist. Then diplomatic relations were stopped. Alternatively, the USA has diplomatic relations with Russia, but up until trump, Russia was not an ally.

@specman If your source is the mainstream media... it would be reasonable to expect that they might not fully know and understand the difference.
I mean, we are using language here that hasn't really been this mainstream since WWII - and most reporters today weren't even born back then.
In looking at what is happening (the US is helping to supply Ukraine with weapons - something that is usually only done among allies), and considering that they're trying to get news out as fast as possible to keep it "current"... they're not fact checking for accuracy right away - and then, even if they do, it's too late by then because it's already out there and other news agencies have picked up on the misinformation and shared it themselves.
This is why we are encouraged to consume a broad range of media, as well as because the broader range is good for helping you to determine your own views without bias
