Why do Republicans want “Civics” classes to replace “Social Studies” classes in schools?

Republicans hate all things civic-minded after all, it’s not like one of those subjects ought to be more friendly territory for right wingers than the other.

Democrats want kids schooled that they may not be the gender they actually are. And of course Democrats will fight tooth and nail for abortion (baby-killing) and "gender-affirming care" - involving castration and mutilation - for children.

Because uneducated conservatives get social studies confused with gender studies. When anyone born after the year 1993 can tell you that American schools use the word “social studies” informally with “general history” and that the content is the same.

@QueenOfZaun Growing up around that time, I always sorta thought it mean "other shit" apart from language arts, math and science. Like, history, but also political science. I think whether republicans win or loose in calling that "civics" is like a non-issue.

Btw.. are you Zoey???

@BRUUH Who tf is Zoey?

@QueenOfZaun A gypsy girl from Yemen

They want the civics classes to teach only what they believe in. Like everything else they want people to only do what they want and to obey everything they say.
Captainjackass · 31-35, M
@Theyitis to be fair most of them never made it to high school and don’t understand what social studies is.

@Theyitis This really gives away your prog , Howard Zinn bias. Why don't you read the Federalist Papers and see what they considered the issues. You happen to be lucky enough to live in the world's OLDEST republic and you are at pains to denigrate it.
SlaveEt · 36-40, F
Because it is obvious the vast majority of those going through the US education system haven't the foggiest idea about civics. If a population does not understand the policies, laws and procedures that govern them, and how to make changes to that system, then they are nothing more than victims and servants of the system. I want better for myself and our nation's children.

Don't you?
Theyitis · 36-40, M
@SlaveEt Sure. But who’s to say we can’t achieve that by teaching social studies better?
SlaveEt · 36-40, F
@Theyitis
Because their 40 year experiment failed? They've tried it, it didn't work. Time to go back to the policy and curriculum that worked.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
Sounds less like "socialism" and not connected with "left wing" university departments . . easier for politicians to control the curriculum content

The state of history-based education in the US is strange. My fiancee and I are the same age. In her state, US history class was utterly dishonest and just kind of brushed off any American genocides or atrocities, whereas in my state, US history class discussed the full scope of such events.
I went to HS in Texas and she did on the East Coast, like the former middle colonies area.
Bumbles · 51-55, M
I think they want history classes espousing the virtues of slavery.

Hmm, well i'm not a republican what so ever, but do consider myself conservative by some historical political definitions. I don't have being civic minded; I actually think in my ideal world, everyone would know their neighbors and have really tight bonds. I think family stability feeds into your village, and a happy village feeds into a happy broader peoples group.

How many Republicans and which ones? Have you conducted actual research on this or are you spewing just to post something?
Theyitis · 36-40, M
@LamontCranston I do know that the three branches of government are Legislative, Executive, and Judicial, and yes, I know there are limits on our government’s power. Did you know that Dictionary.com defines civics as “The study or science of the privileges and obligations of citizens.”? Fancy that, the idea that each citizen has certain responsibilities to help foster a safe and empowering community for the benefit of others.
@Theyitis Yes, I know that very well and I know that civics studies have been ignored in many school systems to the detriment of our repubic. Citizens should obey the law. What other obligations do they have? Bow to elites who undermine the rule of law and push progressive policies?
I'll bet you that half of graduating seniors of public schools can't name the three branches. Or that that a court can void a legislative or executive act and why.
RedBaron · M
@Theyitis Just as I thought. You are spewing just to post something, but telling me to get a life.

That’s rich, “dude.”
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
Didn't know they did, but then I wasn't sure they still had civics classes in school at all these days. But when I went to high school we had Civics -- a class that explained how the US government worked, from the local up through the state and finally the national level. No politics, just an explanation of the technical aspects of how the government works.

@Patriot96 I don’t remember talking about feelings in social studies. Just saying.

@Reason10 I've never seen as little intellectual diversity among any group as I have among white Republicans.
