If the Confederate flag is always racist no matter what, why didn't anyone view the Duke Boys as being Klan members when they flew it over their car?

??
SW-User
You mean why were they a successful show 40 years ago when white men were still running the networks and blacks were just starting to get their own shows on television?
@SW-User No matter how popular and talented Black performers were...they were not allowed to use white bathrooms or hotels.Lena Horne, Ella and Marilyn Monroe helped end that madness
SubstantialKick · 36-40, M
I was always taught the Confederate flag was a symbol of anti establishment. Never heard it being about racism til a few years ago. Considering I bought my confederate flag from a black man who was selling all kinds of Confederate flag stuff I thought he agreed with me.

And the Dukes helped black people to get away from a crooked system that they were rebelling against.
losthorizons · 51-55, M
@SW-User sucky sucky racist
Graylight · 51-55, F
@losthorizons
Then make fun of mental challenge peeps

🤫 I think that's what he's doing.
Carla · 61-69, F
@Graylight ha🤣
BlueVeins · 22-25
The Confederate government stood for extreme racism, but there genuinely are some people who fly it out of ignorance instead of malice. And there are also contexts in which it's appropriate, such as Civil War Reenactments.
MickRogers · 26-30, M
@Carla Ignorance actually is an excuse and is quite a proper one in our society.

We literally let people have government jobs who believe in Zombie Jews and Talking Snakes, after all. Don't tell me "ignorance" isn't excusable.
Carla · 61-69, F
@MickRogers alright. *I* dont find it excusable.
BlueVeins · 22-25
@MickRogers @Carla I think it's moreso explanation than excuse. Like yeah people shouldn't be ignorant of history, but it's less incriminating than supporting racism and slavery.
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
Oh shit you got them guess they're all hypocrites who never believed in anything all along. Racism is over folks!
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
Pretzel · 61-69, M
some did even back then.

others were not sensitive to the pain/anger/frustration it inspired
Graylight · 51-55, F
@Pretzel Some still aren't.
It only seems to have been considered racist in the last 5-10 years. Prior to that it was symbolic of being rebellious. Most people just called it a rebel flag and meant it.
@Carla I remember we thought that because Jimmy Carter was president that he might make it happen in his home state. Oh, well.
SW-User
@SirenCalledLuce That's because the internet made it possible for individuals to express their thoughts and opinions across the world. The Confederate flag has always been a divisive topic here in the states.

@Kingfish1 Another one who doesn’t know what the term “woke” means. So tell me what other countries had slaves while referring to themselves as The Land of the Free, okay ?
That’s why the U.S. takes such criticism. And the American South is not the only place criticized for racial segregation laws. South Africa had apartheid, after all.

@Kingfish1 No, we can’t. As long as questions like this keep coming up and people are fighting to fly these flags (even Germany outlawed the swastika), people obviously still need to know the history.
Wow I never noticed that the thing on General Lee was the confederate flag. It's fishy even if it means different things to different people. I think it should have gotten the swastika treatment since the end of the civil war.
@PiecingBabyFaceTogether I agree. It’s been the equivalent of the swastika here. I don’t see why anyone doesn’t get that.
@bijouxbroussard It's as bad as ISIS flag. It's just so weird that it's allowed on social media and all.

@Kingfish1 I didn't infer anything about you. I simply responded to precisely what you said. You asked what she was doing for slavery in the rest of the world and implied that if she was not actively doing something about that, then it didn't matter to her. You inferred something about her, and then implied something about her.

@bijouxbroussard Oh, it's the old "if you can't solve everything on a dime you probably shouldn't try at all" argument. Brilliant of Kingfish. 🙄
I'm from Mississippi and the Confederate flag stood for the Confederacy. there is no way to put a shine on it.
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
Brilliant🙄
I base all my moral belief systems on the Dukes of Hazard.
Quite simple. Because of the people who owned the networks and held the balance of power. In a time when you could still lynch someone and get away with it you were not going to see much in the way of alternative viewpoints.

And I am confused why you think a fictional TV show somehow changes objective reality and historical facts.
Fukfacewillie · 56-60, M
There was less awareness at the time, but I always found it in poor taste. And the name of the car was the Robert E Lee.
SW-User
@Fukfacewillie I never watched the show BECAUSE of the flag, and the generalized southern idiocy that it seemed to represent.
pdockal · 56-60, M
It's NOT racist
And if you understand history you would know that and you would also know that the war between the states wasn't about slavery ... it was about states rights vs federal government rights ... the south didn't want to take over they wanted to leave
Fukfacewillie · 56-60, M
@pdockal most of the articles of secession make reference to slavery. And no one was even telling them not to have slaves at the time. They actually freaked out for no reason except paranoia when Lincoln was elected. The burning issue was slavery in the territories not the south.
@losthorizons flagged and reported
MethDozer · M
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
Well, they said it couldn't be done, but you did it. You have proven the confederate flag has no racial meaning whatsoever. That settles that.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@MarkPaul Hey! Sarcasm is my department. Lol.
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
@LordShadowfire Oh, I'm just a temp to help out during the busy season.
Same reason people watched shows that referred to black people as “Negroes”. Different times and people didn’t know any better. And some people didn’t watch it even back then.
MickRogers · 26-30, M
@bijouxbroussard I'm just saying. Why isn't the "woke" crowd ready to lynch Bo Duke for waving the flag like they are with anyone else?
@MickRogers Do you even know what “woke” initially meant ? And speaking of lynchings, that’s something else the Confederate battle flag represented. That’s why the KKK flies it now.
Fukfacewillie · 56-60, M
@MickRogers Bro, the show has been off the air for decades.lol.
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
They certainly did in the movie:

Thevy29 · 41-45, M
@LordShadowfire I didn't think Burt Reynolds was looking too well in the film, he was way too skinny.

I tried to find the scene where their driving into the city and people were giving them shit about the flag.. It was a lot of fun though.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@Thevy29 I mean, I'm not out to ruin everybody else's good time, But I'm the type of guy to let one crappy casting choice ruin the whole movie for me.
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
@LordShadowfire I can understand that.
ToSirwithLove · 31-35, F
ohh It's a bit too heated I think I better get out of the kitchen.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
Why isn’t the US flag racist when that flag was flown on every slave ship
SW-User
MickRogers · 26-30, M
@Carla Your inferior brain probably exploded by the question exposing the double standard in your thinking, clearly.
Carla · 61-69, F
@MrBrownstone so you were serious.
The us flag flies on ships originating from the us. Cargo notwithstanding.
The Confederate flag represented traitors to the United states. States refused to abolish slavery. That was the issue. If you want to call it states rights to own, abuse and dehumanize people, go ahead.
You people can try to rewrite history in any way you wish if it makes you feel better. But while you're feeling better, you just come across as racist AND stupid.
ZombiesAteMyArm · 41-45, M
BECAUSE THEY WERE GOOD OL' BOYS NEVER MEANING NO HARM.

also the car looks better without that dumb loser flag.
DestroyerOfIdeologies · 22-25, M
There are black people who like the Confederate Flag as well. I don't own any flags, Confederate, or otherwise. Personally I feel uneasy about the Confederate flag. But I've heard stories of minorities celebrating with it especially down south. The thing is it means different things for different people.

@DestroyerOfIdeologies Yes. Many of us refer to them as “Uncle Toms”. They’re a bit of an embarrassment, but their confusion doesn’t change the facts of what happened. Same as folks who call each other the “n” word or bleach their skin. Self-loathing and internalized racism is real, alas.
SW-User
@bijouxbroussard Exactly. Seeing those YouTube videos, my first thought was self-loathing. The amount of black people who actually agree with those people in the videos are so few and far between, it's ridiculous to consider giving them a platform here. It's another attempt to legitimize a mindset steeped in willful ignorance.
I think the duke boys was designed to mock a whole group of ppl. But had the opposite effect.. it resonated and became popular...
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout I happen to agree.
MickRogers · 26-30, M
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout I've never actually thought about it that way.....
Ladyred · 46-50, F
There were thoughts of that no doubt, but everything was about hiding secret thoughts. Now we are encouraged to be without mask.
Jackaloftheazuresand · 26-30, M
Because they weren't villains and we all understood that
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
Because the white TV executives didn't care if a few black people got angry over what was on top of the car.
MethDozer · M
30-40 years ago when it was very often sported by bikers, metalheads, and other edgey groups as a symbol of societal rejection or just for shock value and because they thought it looked neat, maybe. But in recent times when it is very, very often flown by people protesting "white genocide", minority rights, and flown next to swastikas by people proudly admitting their racism, not so much.

Years and years ago? Yeah I knew quite a few people who had it adorned on things as just some vest or wall flare which no racist intentions just that it was anti-mainstream. Nowadays with recent event events I haven't seen anyone sporting one who wasn't doing so a racist gesture or sympathies towards racists.
