It only seems to have been considered racist in the last 5-10 years. Prior to that it was symbolic of being rebellious. Most people just called it a rebel flag and meant it.

@SirenCalledLuce That’s not true. I was involved in protests trying to get it removed from the state building as a college student in Georgia.
That was in 1977. The mainstream media didn’t pay attention the way it does now.

@bijouxbroussard It’s true of people were I live. As a kid I neither knew or cared about foreign history. It was just another goofy old show that would come on a Sunday and if you asked oriole says it was a rebel flag.

@bijouxbroussard I remember efforts to have the damned thing removed from state buildings, I cant remember what states, when I was in north Carolina in the eighties and nineties.
bijouxbroussard · F
@SirenCalledLuce What’s “oriole” ? That flag only existed because some fought for the right to own other human beings.
SirenCalledLuce · F
@bijouxbroussard A typo for people.
Seriously. Do you expect a 10 year old girl to Google all the markings on all the cars of all the crappy 70s US TV shows? Don’t be so tedious.

@SirenCalledLuce No. I expect an adult to understand. This question is tedious, because it’s 2021 and racism is still a fact of life in the U.S.

I think it depends on where you live. Here in Oregon, it's been considered racist for about 20 or 30 years. Naturally, that also depends on who you ask. Also, do you remember an episode of Designing Women, back in the mid-90s, when Delta Burke's character wanted a birthday party with a big Confederate flag and the black guy had a problem with it, but he wasn't sure how to say it?

@bijouxbroussard Well not everyone is from the US, knows or cares about the back story. Up until now social issues elsewhere in the world have been beneath US attention, so there’s no reason for us to drop everything and jump on your moral crusade.
It was a orange car with driven by two idiots with a flag that means nothing to anyone outside the US. And that’s all there is to it.

@LordShadowfire Well that’s the thing. I live in Europe. We never see that flag unless theres line dancing. So until outrage made the news nobody saw a reason to think anything of it.
bijouxbroussard · F
@SirenCalledLuce You’re right, if you don’t live here you get a pass for not knowing what’s going on. Sorry. You cared enough to express an opinion.

@bijouxbroussard I guess what I was saying was outrage about that flag didn’t make news here until the last 5-10 years. Like I said to someone else, if you see a confederate flag in Europe, it means there’s either a line dancing class or monster trucks are touring. Because until recently we had no association to the hurt it caused as a symbol, it wasn’t on people’s radar. I still remember a kid on my street who had a little remote control car version, until it jumped a ramp too high and dashed itself to pieces.
bijouxbroussard · F
@Carla I remember we thought that because Jimmy Carter was president that he might make it happen in his home state. Oh, well.

@SirenCalledLuce That's because the internet made it possible for individuals to express their thoughts and opinions across the world. The Confederate flag has always been a divisive topic here in the states.
