It's just a given name.
Some famous people named Karen include Karen Allen, the actress who was in films like Animal House, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Starman and The Sandlot.
Karen Grassle, the actress who had roles in television programs like Little House on the Prairie and Loveboat.
And the singer, Karen Carpenter, who along with her brother and musical partner, Richard Carpenter had hit songs like Looking For Love, (They long to be) Close To You and Rainy Days and Mondays.

@Sidewinder That is not what the slang term means.
Sidewinder · 36-40, M
@bijouxbroussard (In neutral tone) I'm well aware of that.
I'm also well aware of slang terminology in general.
I just simply prefer not to employ such specific slang terminology in my own vocabulary, all on account of the fact that I have a friend/former schoolmate whose Mother actually happens to bear the given name of "Karen," (not divulging surname for reasons of confidentiality) and that she is nothing like the aforementioned stereotype.

@Sidewinder Of course that is so, but the OP was asking about the slang term, which is still being used.
GuyWithOpinions · 31-35, M
Really? Youve never heard that? A "karen" is an obnoxious entitled woman.
The kind of woman screams at you for walking on the wrong side walk.
A woman who doesnt like your dog so pretends to be bitten by it.
Those who protest passionately but dont understand what exactly thier protesting.

@GuyWithOpinions Most people complain when someone walks on the wrong side of the walkway. You can't just tack that onto someone called Karen.
Everybody likes dogs where I come from, including all of us whose name happens to be Karen.
Oh, and there is no such word as "thier".

I am surprised no one has mentioned the "Karen cut".
Not all Karens have this style, some might. There are variations.
Karens are kind of fascinating to see in the wild, but it is best to avoid them.

A Karen is a member of a tribe in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. As far as I know the Karens are in revolt against the military government over there!🤔

Apparently, the male equivalent of a “Karen” is a “Carl”. I know a few Karens and Carls and they don’t appreciate their name being used as a stereotype. I don’t blame them. And I know a Dick who probably isn’t thrilled either lol
Caz82 · 41-45, FNew
@BiasForAction That's what confused me. The case was really interesting but the article didn't explain what Karen meant or why the judge objected to it.
I feel sorry for any woman called Karen who's tarred with the same brush

@BiasForAction I thought the male equivalent was a Kevin.
Actually, I don’t think there is any one male equivalent.

I think a lady called Karen once got filmed being a bit mean spirited or something, it became a bit of a thing.
It’s silly really and a bit hurtful to people with that name.

It's a lady thats overly sweet and kind
RockerDad · M
Karen’s are usually entitled women and are usually the kind of women who are on the board of some HOA (or think they are), and complain about absurd perceived rule infractions. They’re up in everyone’s business, and have no problem confronting a complete stranger.

These days it refers to a certain sort of arrogant woman demanding to "speak to the manager" and thereby receive some kind of special treatment.
I believe this woman may be the origin of the term.

Someone who cares and judges others beyond any reflection. They are nearly perfect and everyone is beneath, thus making them entitled to judge (to themselves). It's also now a slippery slope anyone also can use to judge a Karen.

@KarenisKenziesmum It is too bad that such a regal name has been highjacked for use as a pejorative term.
KarenisKenziesmum · 51-55, F
@LamontCranston Whose idea was that anyway? Who was the Karen it was named after? Was it a character in a movie or something?
Oh, by the way, the word is "hijacked".

LamontCranston · M
@KarenisKenziesmum While I will be sure to spell it as you wish in further conversations with you, Karen, my spelling is actually a recognized older variant of "hijacked". (By the way, ialways use "glamour" instead of "glamor" even though I'm American because I think it looks more glamorous.)
ChatGpt has a good history of the use of Karen but says there is no identifiable originator.
Very best regards and I'd be happy to chat if you'd like.

It was a term coined during Peak Covid to describe all the 'crazy people'. Those of us who consciously chose to oppose Covid rules and reject jabs, masks, etc. have all been laughing at the 'crazy people' since.

A "Karen" is the AAVE term for a woman who uses her privilege to bully strangers, usually service people, waitstaff, clerks, cashiers, or those whom she sees as "less than".

Not a term I use.
Another one of those ridiculous disparaging slang terms to put a woman down who is behaving in a way many think they are superior too.

Karen is a pejorative slang term typically used to refer to a middle class woman who is perceived as entitled or excessively demanding. The term is often portrayed in memes depicting middle-class white women who "use their white and class privilege to demand their own way
