What is the best concert you have ever been to, and why??

I saw the Goo Goo Dolls and they were amazing!!!

ArtieKat · M
Are we allowed to nominate music festivals? In which case it would be about equal between the Bath Festival in 1970 with Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Fairport Convention..... or The Isle of Wight in 1970 too - Jimi Hendrix's last English gig before he died; Jethro Tull, The Who, The Doors, Donovan......
@ArtieKat yes thats a concert and you see bands there
SW-User
@rocknroll The worst I saw had Leona Lewis as the star. And she was lukewarm and could not be bothered with us.
@SW-User the worst for me was the pretty reckless
The best was Paul Mccartney and 2nd best would be rolling stones
graphite · 61-69, M
Peter Gabriel was memorable - he and the band came marching down the center aisle of the theater to approach the stage. Paul McCartney was good, too. Yes, Talking Heads...so many. Went to see Robert Fripp and League of Gentleman - Fripp walked right past me at the bar.
SW-User
@graphite Was at the first Wings University impromptu concert in Feb 1972.
ArtieKat · M
@graphite
Back in the World tour

33 concerts • 13 countries ; United Kingdom • Liverpool • King's Dock. Jun 01, 2003

It was in Liverpool where I saw him
graphite · 61-69, M
@ArtieKat Right at home for him. I saw him in an 18,000-seat US sports arena.
Jeff Beck and Stevie Ray Vaughan. I was fourth row center.
@BlueSkyKing that had to be great
As much as I loved seeing tom petty and fleetwood mac concerts, I think I have to say trans siberian orchestra holds the top spot.
SW-User
@SooperSarah oh really!? Wow, I’m sad I never saw them, damn I’m old enough to have enjoyed seeing them a couple times.
@SW-User it wasn't too long ago it was the old gang back together touring. I didn't get to see them with mcvie though ):
SW-User
@SooperSarah Ya I was broke and couldn’t afford tickets at that time. ☹️
SW-User
Too hard to pick a favourite, I have seen so many bands, Queensrÿche, Lenny Kravitz, Lady Gaga and Pink stick out in my mind as amazing concerts.
Handfull1 · 61-69, F
@SW-User Pink puts on a great show!
ArtieKat · M
I just found a poster for the Bath Festival in 1970 - so many bands I'd forgotten about!
dubkebab · 56-60, M
@ArtieKat I was saddened to not see Hawkwind in the line up.Perhaps they played for free in the parking lot .
ArtieKat · M
@dubkebab I think that Hawkwind played for free at the Isle Of Wight
dubkebab · 56-60, M
@ArtieKat correct ! set up outside the gate, like true psychedelic warlords .
dubkebab · 56-60, M
It's really hard to pick a favorite as best...Lee Perry in a small hall with a backstage invite from the soundman to hang out for a while was epic. Of the dozen or so Scratch shows I've seen, that might have been the strongest set, although emotions were running high at his first appearance back in the USA after 17 years.Mad Professor himself mixing the Robotics band leant an extra bit of gravity to that affair.

I often credit Fishbone as the best live band I've ever seen...and I stand by that statement. At the height of their powers, they ruled ! A few years ago I was telling Angelo Moore that they were to only band to send me to the ER~twice. We had a good laugh and he thanked me for not trying to sue them, haha.

Ummm,also Bad Brains. wow.

There has never been a live experience like Crash Worship in the 90's. Words fail to describe it.

Hanging out around a campfire with James Taylor and 3 other guys was a singular musical memory as well.

Seen many, many legends in big stadiums, but ummm, not my scene so much.

Best DJ set? Mungo's HiFi-4 hours straight,all killer,no filler.

oh,or Shinehead ripping the roof off a small club. Proper.

PS- I have a Goo Goo Dolls autographed CD (signed by the whole band) with a tote bag I can sell pretty cheap. They are very polite for rock stars.
eli1601 · 70-79, M
Jethro Tull, New Haven Arena, 1971 or 1972.

Great musicians and show men. The arena held about 4,000 so there were no bad views and great acoustics.

They did a two and a half hours show and the encore was well over an hour.
eli1601 · 70-79, M
@ArtieKat And "Thick as a Brick"
ArtieKat · M
@eli1601
"Thick as a Brick"
Not as much lol
dubkebab · 56-60, M
@eli1601 I saw them around that time-my first concert memory.
Red lights,a strange tiny man contorting in a spotlight as I stood on my dad's shoulders.
SW-User
It was a Grass Roots concert. But it was the backup that stole the show. Aerosmith!
SW-User
@graphite wow! I never heard anything about that. I can tell you at least half the crowd left after Grass Roots came on.
Handfull1 · 61-69, F
@SW-User can’t beat “Let’s Live For Today!”
SW-User
@Handfull1 Temptation Eyes was a favorite of mine.
ChiefJustWalks · 26-30
I've never been to a concert before. Someday though...
graphite · 61-69, M
@ChiefJustWalks All the good acts are retiring or, worse, dying off. I got to see the Ramones (all dead now), the Who when 3 of them were still alive...
SW-User
@ChiefJustWalks You must do.
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
@ChiefJustWalks omg really!! im so surprised. i live in the Live Music Capitol of the World..went to 37 concerts in one year
DragonFruit · 70-79, M
Cream
Van Halen
Eric Clapton and Santana
B.B. King
Steve Miller Band and Peter Frampton

I don’t really rate concerts, but those ones stand out in my mind as having been great shows.
DragonFruit · 70-79, M
@graphite Yes, I know. I was a big fan of the group in my younger years, but never saw any concert until the early 70s.....However, I was born and raised in NYC and did see their show in Madison Square Garden (they also did a couple of shows at the Royal Albert Hall in London that same year).
graphite · 61-69, M
@DragonFruit I figured you either saw the reunion show or went to see them when you were 5-8 years old (unlikely).
DragonFruit · 70-79, M
@graphite I was in my teens when they split....I'm close to 69 years old now.
SW-User
TexChik · F
Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, ZZ Top, Alabama, The Eagles ...but the best was probably George Strait's farewell concert finally in Dallas, the only star that didn't perform was Merl Haggard, because he was sick. I was amazing 4 hours, 103,000 in a US indoor arena...New world record.
SW-User
@Fullmetal Was Brian Jones there, or just the fossils?
kentex35 · 100+, M
In Louisville, Kentucky we have an old armory that now works as a concert hall. Great acoustics. Best 2 concerts pink Floyd and Rolling Stones. Pink Floyd played "Dark Side of the Moon" straight through verbatim and did one of these days to close no encore perfect show. Tooling stone had their own star shaped stage that had these balloons shoot out that looked phallic and white smaller balloons that looked like whateversquirting water cum colored. They were between albums so they just played everything and in time on key. They were in town for the Kentucky Derby too. I was up close made eye contract even offered them a hit from this Colombian red bud. To if the line for the US at the time. I was just back from you know some little country and their p kickedot was called Budda or Thai stick. I was kinda spoiled. You talk about one toke marijuana. It was so strong you go past munchies straight into the Twilight zone.
thepeculiarpanda · 36-40, M
I saw Death Cab for Cutie in 2005 and it was an awesome show. They played for about three and a half hours. :)
graphite · 61-69, M
@thepeculiarpanda This is where they got their name from -a Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band song featured in the Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour.
[media=https://youtu.be/qKXsrWrmbAg]
thepeculiarpanda · 36-40, M
@graphite Yes indeed! They put on a really good live show the two times I saw them. :)
kentex35 · 100+, M
Rolling Stones in a small armory or Pink Floyd right after Dark Side of the Moon came out. Same armory. Pink Floyd started the show with the pulse and played the whole album in order almost exactly as they did it in the studio. Allman Brothers were just trying to get some video . Played all slow stuff I wanted to hear whipping post, one way out etc. Led Zeppelin added Louisville at least second at the end of their tour they were work out or drunk Jimmy Page couldn't keep time, plant didn't seem to mind he had his own meter. I heard some great things about other cities. People come into Kentucky thinking we're all hillbillies with no outside contact.
Sorry I get dysentery of the oral cavity even when I am typing.
WillieT · 61-69, M
I was 10 at the time, but remember Woodstock was a lot of fun. More recently, Yoji Biomehanica and the Euphoria Fest were great.
Also had to see Babymetal when they came by, liked the novelty of hearing mosh music that wasn't about demons, nazi butchers and cruelty'
graphite · 61-69, M
@WillieT Woodstock: Hope you brought an umbrella.
WillieT · 61-69, M
@graphite I was soaking wet and caked with mud. At 10, that was part of the fun.
metallica "master of puppets" tour 1986...because it was played in a small venue and hetfield was a beast.
@SW-User absolutely!!!! i had a look at upcoming events around here and there's not much i'm into tho...unless i missed something. but yeah... meet me for a beer anytime 😀
SW-User
@beermeplease I would have loved seeing Tool! Okay cool.
@SW-User message me anytime you're in town

Pfuzylogic · M
@exexec Saw him.in 84 at Mud Island Memphis. The outfits that the concert goers wore were outrageous!
vetguy1991 · 51-55, M
Saw van halen back in 92
@vetguy1991 was that when alice in chains opened up?
JasminD · 26-30, F
I've never been to many shows, sadly, just mainly the local things in bars. Intimate. Guys, or girls, with an acoustic. That type of thing.

The only shows that I have ever been to, apart from that, have been to see The Spice Girls. Mum is a big fan and we went to one of their reunion shows some years back.

Like, 80'000 people. Took my breathe away. Such an audio/visual assault on my senses.
Pfuzylogic · M
Many but the most unexpected was the BOC Agents of Fortune concert.
It got downright bizarre and the Mr. Natural that I took didn’t help matters.
Pfuzylogic · M
@dubkebab
You probably had a later version.
dubkebab · 56-60, M
@Pfuzylogic Point taken. Most of my journeys were 86-96ish. Unless some freak had a stack saved in the freezer.(?) I did get ahold of Hog Farm crystal/liquid from time to time...whew.
Pfuzylogic · M
@dubkebab
My first was in 75 and last in 86.
It got me delusional so I had to quit since I was starting a family.
Goodluckwiththat · 61-69, M
Roliing Stones, Neil Young and Crazy Horse
ArtieKat · M
@Goodluckwiththat The only time I saw Neil Young (whom I love) live was in about 1974 (I think it was the "On The Beach" tour) and the support act was an "unknown" band called The Eagles. They blew him off the stage because he refused to play anything off "Harvest" or "After The Goldrush"
nacnud · 36-40, M
Maybe suitable for this weekend but playing at the Menin Gate in Ypres. There was a thunderstorm happening at the time followed by a rainbow afterwards. Never forgotten it.
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
soooo many..i went to 37 one year. hard to chooose. some of my many favorites: neutral milk hotel, alt-j, damien rice, pixies, arcade fire, sigur ros, atmosphere, modest mouse, oasis, death cab, a perfect circle, nas
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
Paul McCartney in 2002. I've seen hundreds of concerts, but this one was just...right in so many ways. I was lifted off the ground, the band was firing on all cylinders.

PS I met Johnny outside ABC Studios in NYC in 2003 after they played "Sympathy" on the Regis and Kelly show. He signed my Black Balloon CD single.

EDIT: Found the video. It was minutes after this performance.

bugeye · 31-35, F
not fond of concerts. i like the music, hearing it live is amazing but then it gets drowned out by the cheering crowd, you're constantly being nudged, drinks get spilled (hopefully not on you)

i'll support my fave musicians by buying the CD's
wildbill83 · 41-45, M
probably the music festivals I went to in mid to late 90's; Bands like soundgarden, creed, staind, filter, fuel, godsmack, nickelback, etc.
Pink Floyd, the Wall at the Nassau colosseum in 1980.

It was an amazing experience.
The stage show was incredible
dubkebab · 56-60, M
@Onestarlitnight I've heard the recordings-a standout performance. I was born quite near there, saw several Dead shows at that venue.
BrandonWyatt36 · 36-40, M
KISS Farewell tour.. And YES it was all the originals NOT the new people.. GENE Simmons got up on this platform and they raised him up above the crowd and he was sticking that tongue out and playing his Bass spitting fake blood everywhere.. It was AMAZIN LMAO 😈😈 🤣🤣🤣
graphite · 61-69, M
@BrandonWyatt36 Saw the original Kiss lineup in 1977, long before they all qualified for Social Security.
BrandonWyatt36 · 36-40, M
@graphite 🤣🤣🤣 OMG social security hahahah but thats Awsome.. Yeah their farewell tour was several years back but i got to see the originals to 😀😀😀
Matt85 · 41-45, M
Muse were pretty good. It was just a great concert and the people were feeling the music. I have a piece of the silver confetti that fell from the ceiling somewhere.
SW-User
I've been to two* which means neither was the best. 😁

* Crowbar (the Canadian band) as well as Teenage Head.
SW-User
@SW-User One was the better though.

@SW-User

Bob Dylan and The Hawks in St. Louis, March 1966. The Hawks became The Band. I was never much of a Dylan fan but The Hawks were incredible.
SW-User
Elvis Costello.

He was doing a warmup concert near me. Quite magical. I love his Juliet Letters, and his rendition of She.
WintaTheAngle · 41-45, M
Rammstein in Coventry last year. The pyrotechnics were so awesome the locals thought it was a terrorist attach and called the emergency services.

dubkebab · 56-60, M
@WintaTheAngle bwahaha-righteous!!!
SW-User
Roger Waters The Wall. Music was fire and not to mention it's like a whole stage production as well. Plus, Roger looked at me during Comfortably Numb and jumped a little bit because I was only 10 and at that concert lol.
SW-User
Bauhaus at Rock City in Nottingham in 1982. Best music venue I've been to, packed out way over the fire limit.
nuddie · 70-79, M
Elton John, Black Sabbath, Status Quo, The Who, Iron Maiden, Genisis, Gary Numan to name but a few, all excellent
GlitterEater · 41-45, F
Yo La Tengo performing The Sounds of Science (films included) outdoors in Prospect Park.

Pink Floyd back in the 90s. One of those experiences one needed to be there to understand.

Probably be a toss up between The Eagles, Van Halen and Jimmy Buffett
SW-User
I'd love to see The Goo Goo Dolls

Actually, Bruce Springsteen years ago was so good
