Why does every second person think they have adhd

Everywhere I go every second person has adhd, if you go on reddit every post is about their adhd. I genuinely don’t believe this many people have broken brains. Some people are animated, spirited, have creative wild minds and are not suppose to be steady, focused, rote or rational. Also I think the younger generation have grown up online and have because of it have withering spans of attention. Really tired of every second person claiming adhd.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
I assume many of them self-diagnosed themselves. I'm more concerned about BPD, honestly. I don't think people self-diagnose themselves with it but with the number of people claiming they have been diagnosed, I'm starting to have doubts if it's really that widespread thing. Now if the person doesn't exactly fit the textbook description they label it as "silent" BPD or "high-functioning" BPD. But if it helps to solve their problems... 🤷‍♀️ Hopefully they know what they do.

I noticed the trend to explain behaviour described as symptoms of ADHD as a result of damaged rewarding system and misdirected motivation for which are social media blamed the most. Time will tell how it really is, I guess.
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@CrazyMusicLover The number is very small it just feel bigger if you see it in your feed on repeat.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@Queendragonfly That could be it.
Rolexeo · 26-30, M
Autism and adhd are overdiagnosed. Adhd cause nobody has an attention span anymore due to social media and because boys acting out in class cause it's an unnatural enviornment for them are ostracized by these Karen social worker teachers and put on meds so they calm down. As for autism, everyone is chronically online and it's making us socially awkward/anxious.
Rolexeo · 26-30, M
@SW-User Social isolation, depression, lack of community, and feelings of inferiority from comparing yourself to others, body dysmorphia, suicide, etc. It's a real problem.
Rolexeo · 26-30, M
@CrazyMusicLover It's a spectrum, you just have to tick off a certain amount of boxes to be diagnosed as such.
SW-User
@Rolexeo It really is, far more than we realize. And quite documented too.
SW-User
Aside from ppl actually diagnosed, I used to falsely claim to have these issues when I had a victim mentality and needed reasons outside of me to blame
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@SW-User I'm sorry but not everyone sees any gain in playing mental ill. Many would find it beyond ok.
@SW-User thats very mature of you to admit that
SW-User
@Queendragonfly why are you offended lmao
SW-User
Agreed.
We are a sm society consumed with diagnosing others and ourselves. It's the downside of the internet. Everyone and their dog thinks they can now google / research and become an expert.
Fertilization · 36-40, F
@SW-User I couldn’t agree more.
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
@SW-User I think part of the issue is that people don't want to or can't afford to engage with the medical system, so it's easier to give in to the temptation for them to self diagnose. For whatever reason(s) they have a bad perception of the medical system. It is what it is.
Fertilization · 36-40, F
@GeistInTheMachine Very well said!
SW-User
I couldn't read the whole post due to ADD

We all have ADHD and we all have PTSD. Everybody now. Talk about diminishing the seriousness of this.
graphite · 61-69, M
@orioninthenight Exactly. Combat vets, with actual, real PTSD, have to "share" the condition with people "traumatized" over a poor grade in school or being yelled at or some other nonsense.
@graphite my thing is that even in Afghanistan it was super rare to meet people who had even been in combat and afterwards came back with ptsd

its something you get only when you are in a situation where everyone is surprised you are still alive....so pretty rare even among combat vets

so you can imagine given that fact that for people to come out and say they have ptsd for whatever little thing it is really bogus

I have a special spot for this topic because in the past when I have called people out on not really having ptsd, I always get banned or whatever
@graphite the issue gets muddied even in the army too because lots of soldiers are fully aware that they can claim ptsd and get disability money from the VA, so for soldiers to claim this is rampant especially because it isnt a physical thing
Torsten · 36-40, M
doctors mass diagnose that shit is why.
I was diagnosed with it as a child. Granted i was trying to jump out of moving cars and shit at the time haha.
Point is though any overly active kid has a good chance of some half wit doctor slapping that label on them
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
I think everywhere you go as in on Reddit and SW and teen crowded online social media's isn't adequate stats of all the people in the world. If you look at mental health topics online you'll find ADHD among many other posts since people who's struggling mentally are more likely to post about it. The other part of the explanation is today it's socially acceptable (more or less) to share about mental illness and therefor you see an explosion of such posts. It doesn't mean everyone in the entire would has ADHD. It just means online MH forums and topics are popular today.
revenant · F
or autism. At times I read that whole families have either autism, asperger or have ADHD. It is hard to believe.
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
@revenant Considering all the pollutants and garbage in the food, maybe only somewhat exaggerated by hypochondriacs or people looking for excuses.
Graylight · 51-55, F
@revenant They're all genetically passed on to come degree or another.
Redstar · 36-40, M
I think calling their brains broken is pretty harsh but yeah, too many people falsely claim that they have ADHD or other things like anxiety. Both are real things that should be taken seriously, not just having the words thrown around until they lose all meaning.
I also hate it when people say they've been triggered by something, when in reality they just don't like it.
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
@Redstar Society is just stupid in general. Pathological.
Graylight · 51-55, F
Three years ago, no one wanted Covid. In the last year, I have not heard one single person get a little cold and not attribute it to Covid. Even after false tests. Because Covid is all anything can think of.

When apps like TikTok isn’t busy creating ADHD, they’re fostering an entire cottage industry out of ADHD, autism and related issues right now. There are telehealth “manage-it-all” subscription programs available now. McDonald’s for your mental health. And for the record, ADHD and autism both have very specific and very well delineated sets of criteria for diagnosis. The way you place you hands, the kind of walk you have, forgetting someone’s name…none of theses are indicators of any mental condition. People need to learn the difference between unofficial traits and actual medical criteria.

And that’s why proper diagnosis is so important. A poster mentioned BPD and being rarer than it seems, and he’s right. All these conditions have varying degrees of prevalence but they all measure below the rate of 5% in the general population. I have a single 800-page textbook on my shelf. 800 pages of tiny type and that was our Introduction to Diagnosis. It’s not a knack you pick up on the Internet.

You wouldn’t get heart flutters and diagnose yourself with a cardia condition. You wouldn’t hear a sound in your car’s engine and diagnose it without a mechanic. Bad things could result. Don’t do it with mental health, either. This is the brain and mind we’re talking about. It’s kinda serious stuff if you’re affected by it.

@Graylight
. In the last year, I have not heard one single person get a little cold and not attribute it to Covid
Dig deeper. That still happens a lot.

I feel the same way about most disorders, like Autism, OCD, etc. I feel like a lot of those who claim they have it weren't formally diagnosed.
4meAndyou · F
Although I have never noticed this, I assume you have noticed it because a huge percentage of the population are now in therapy, and are probably taking prescription ADHD drugs. OR...perhaps people need to SAY they have ADHD to justify the illegal ADHD drugs they ARE taking.

The drugs people take to treat ADHD were on the news this morning...I guess it's sort of like speed. The ADHD drugs being sold online and in Mexico are laced with Fentanyl and may be solid poison.
Because taking speed is fun and drug companies don't mind the money.
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
@Roundandroundwego How am I supposed to conquer Poland without speed?
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
I imagine about 75 percent of people who claim they have ADHD are either self-diagnosed or were told they had it by their parents when they were young, with no actual medical professional weighing in.
Fertilization · 36-40, F
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
I make no such claim and I see very little people who do... Perhaps it's because I'm in a different age bracket?
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
@Fable there is good and bad, as it's not as acceptable to make fun of people with mental illness, that's good.
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@Fable It's not so much about it being popular as it is that mental health awareness is wide spread today compared to when I was a teen. It's a free outlet to cope with one's struggles. That's the most common reason. The second most common reason to why you feel this way is because you also hang around in mental health forums.

Because they are not good at concentration, because they don't know how to be good at it and not practiced the right way.

If you actually do have it it can be extremely frustrating
Fertilization · 36-40, F
Good question, indeed.
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
I think you have to be focused for the most part to do well in society. I can't focus worth a damn, but I dunno if that is just depression related or what. I know my mind is broken. IDK the label, I just need to fix me ASAP.
But only they would know for certain whether or not they’ve been diagnosed.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
I have adult ADHD, but I'm formally diagnosed.
