What was the best way you learned a language

I use to speak quite a bit of Spanish. But I haven’t had anyone to talk fluently to. Now that I’m mostly in Spanish/English speaking cities I find it really needed. How did you learn your 2nd language.
Grew up with it. I advise anyone who wants to speak a second language to grow up bilingual.

I think reading helps like this, just to read books novels maybe even newspaper if you can find this. I learn English and German from high school but when I have to start to do research a lot of the publications is only written in English so I have to be able to do this for study.

@MadraLaska thank you, I really like the book and newspaper idea.

I took 1 yr of french, 3 yrs high school Spanish and 6 yrs college spanish and 1 yr German. Cant speak any it
I live in a country where French is supposed to be the second language, but was given scant teaching. I imagine, it takes discipline, a little want, and I hear it helps if you train yourself if there are things you want expressed, say them in the language you are learning.

@thewindupbirdchronicles thank you. I will try that

It helps if you learn a second language while young, like in the home. People who grow up in bilingual families generally have the easiest time learning other languages due to the language part of the brain developing better.

Immersion is the best way to learn a language. You can simulate it with internet chats and face to face online but nothing beats being with people speaking the language you want to learn.

@Muthafukajones agree thank you

Like you I have no native speakers of french around me so I basically taught myself and learned through books. I also took some classes but found them a waste of time cause I was beyond the other speakers.
I think one needs to take classes. Read and watch movies on that language. Then you need to practice it with other people. Immersion is very important.

From my parents - English from my Dad and Cantonese from my Mum 🙂🙂
TheeRoyalBee · 31-35, F
@Dlrannie did you learn both at a really young age? Did you ever confuse/mix the two.
Dlrannie · 31-35, F
@TheeRoyalBee Yep Dad always spoke to me in English and Mum in Cantonese so to me they are joint first languages 🙂. I used to confuse the staff at nursery school as they never knew what language I’d come out with😂😂😂

@Dlrannie 😂 awe that’s nice . Pretty cool

Read a lot of textbooks on that language's sentence structure and vocabulary then dive head first into watching movies.

@Nanori shhh
Immersion. Spent a month in Italy, and found myself wanting to respond to comments and questions in Italian shortly after I returned.

You read day by day. It takes time to fluent. More better if you have native speak to practice with youm
