What was the best way you learned a language

I use to speak quite a bit of Spanish. But I haven’t had anyone to talk fluently to. Now that I’m mostly in Spanish/English speaking cities I find it really needed. How did you learn your 2nd language.

I think reading helps like this, just to read books novels maybe even newspaper if you can find this. I learn English and German from high school but when I have to start to do research a lot of the publications is only written in English so I have to be able to do this for study.
