Do u believe people on food stamps should buy junk food 🍔
There is a huge uproar on Tik Tok about this current issue today. States are now putting limitations on what you can purchase with EBT cards. No more chips and soda and sweets can be bought anymore through the SNAP program. And that you can only buy fruits, vegetables, bread, dairy and meats. Hmmmmm. Do you believe that this is fair ? Do you believe the government should be telling US what to eat. The floor is yours SW. Best answer wins.☺🍊
I had a close friend who lost everything after his business collapsed and his wife divorced him, taking everything that was left. He lived in our hometown, and whenever we visited family, I made sure to visit him. I would take him to the grocery store, and he would use food stamps to buy necessities. Then I would get a cart, and he would pick out the junk food, ice cream, and other things that make life enjoyable. I paid for all of that. I'm not sure the government needs to limit what can be bought, nor do I think store personnel want to play the role of enforcers of the limits.
It is free support .. some strings attached to help ensure better overall use of the funding is fine from my perspective. The sense of entitlement to want to complain and expect to continue to use it on junk instead of core nutrition with increases in costs, is a big part of the problem in our society. I'm tired of the level of taxes I pay .. and seeing it go to so many who manage to have tatoos and money for alcohol and drugs .. because of what is taken from my earnings.. is a problem for me.
Most people on food stamps either have no insurance or are on Medicare/caid. By limiting or eliminating unhealthy choices you are promoting healthier people. Is it reasonable to pay for the care and medication for a diabetic and also pay for their cupcakes? I believe helping eat is an important function but asking them to be healthy choice conscious is as important.
@Zonuss You posted about food stamp choices which is what I responded to if you post about accountability and I respond to it we will discuss it. My thought on the topic you posted is they have every right to decide what to pay for.
@Zonuss As I said is every politician is a thief. I have no answer how to fix that. There will never be accountability for politicians. You can tell every politician is lying if their lips are moving. If you want to fix politicians and your weapon of choice is using food stamps to buy ice cream no one reading this will be alive when you bring the politicians to their knees. This issue is a tempest in a teaspoon while the hurricane corruption thievery and deceit rages through every government level in the land. I will help you hold government accountable.........WE THE PEOPLE DEMAND FOOD STAMPS CAN BUY ICE CREAM!!! I hope that cracks the corrupt government wide open and every politician gets on board the ice cream cause for the virtue of all government. Because free government funded Twinkies is a fundamental human right and the corruption is taking it away. I'd say there are probably better places to shine your spot light.
Sounds okay to me. We don't have food stamps in Canada (as far as I know!) but I gather the idea is already that the government is giving people food. So it makes sense to me that the government wants to give people healthy food.
@Zonuss wanna live rent free ? Govt gunna tell you where to live . Want welfare ? Govt gunna tell you how much you can earn legally . Want free food ? Govt gunna tell you what you can and can’t eat . At least the govt is consistent .
Yeah junk food should be available always unless they wanna make healthy food cheap. Fresh stuff is expensive. If I get salad ingredients it's a crazy high price.
I eat omad (still get my calories in) and I usually make healthyish food but if someone had a family or they ate more than once, cooking from scratch and whole foods is way expensive. I wouldn't be able to really do it if I ate more. I couldn't imagine body builders with the type of food prices we have who need to eat 4 to 5 times daily.
The problem in a nutshell (sorry, the image is years old, but the idea holds)
Here's more data from 2010. The numbers will have changed alot; the proportions will still be similar. https://www.businesspundit.com/the-cost-of-living-healthy-vs-unhealthy/
@SatanBurger ahah maybe you're onto something. some junk food is cheap. others are expensive. the ones you mentioned are nutritionally void crp, choc full of sodium. they will keep you full for minutes until you need your next fix. on the other hand, you can find animal protein for $5 that will feed a family of 4. despite being less food than the cheaper ramen, it will be more satiating. of course, there is nothing free but I think it's a good deal.
nowadays people are overly obsessed with animal protein. as if a little drop in protein and you will suddenly morph into Stephen Hawking. I might have 20-30 grams after a workout but I don't eat nearly as much as you in a single meal.
@StygianKohlrabi For sure you're right on that and my original response on here states that if they made healthy food cheaper like meat, I honestly don't think most wouldn't be having an issue. There's a woman today on Instagram who spent 90 on only three bags, she showed what she got and it was nothing too crazy. And that was just for her, I couldn't imagine a family of 4.
on the other hand, you can find animal protein for $5 that will feed a family of 4.
Wow I can't find that at all. It's around 8.99 to 15 dollars depending which brand here for 1 pound of beef. It's around 20 to 50 dollars per steak and around 5 dollars per dozen eggs over here oh and I saw 20.99 for 5 hamburgers once in the frozen section.
nowadays people are overly obsessed with animal protein. I might have 20-30 grams after a workout but I don't eat nearly as much as you in a single day.
You don't got to agree, that's your opinion but mine differs.
@ElwoodBlues Anyways per your graph 36b dollars daily vs 3 dollars for the junk food was a long time ago but now it's probably even more for healthy food
I get that people should spend their stamps wisely, but if they spend it on stuff they shouldn't that's on them.
When I was on emergency benefits (approx 400usd pr month plus rent) I knew I shouldn't spend it on tobacco, but I still did. So when I ran out of money for food I knew it was my own damn fault. Now when I get paid disability benefits (a lot more than the minimum) I make sure to pay my bills first, get enough groceries for the next month, stock up on whatever my cat needs, get my meds, and only then spend money on nicotine, snacks, alcohol and whatever else I might crave.
No, but a I also don't think you can dictate what other people choose to eat. Plus I think a lot people just trade someone there stamps for money so they can buy cigs or alcohol.
I don't believe the "snack food industry," or it's largest producers like Frito Lay, or Coca Cola, are going to like that. The entire industry will lose billions. Not to mention this is a "right wing" idea and I find it very interesting how the right keeps calling for smaller government yet endors policies that require a larger and larger government.
Yes , it’s food aid , how can we begrudge a person of potato chips or soda ? You could buy caviar and lobster tails with it so Diet Coke and potato chips seems ok to me
Nobody's telling anyone what to eat. Just buy the junk on your own dime, not mine. I seem to recall that things like cigarettes and beer are not available on benefits cards either.
@GerOttman I think we should stop ignoring the fact that the government is at the nucleus of these issues here. You can always boycott and take a stand.
@Zonuss hmmm, I'm not sure what that means. How would I boycott the government? Or do you mean something else. You clearly have something in mind but I'm missing it I guess.
@Zonuss Well, rather than call you rude names or disparage your character, I'll just assume you are to busy to provide a meaningful answer to my question. Get back to me when you can...
No man that one is B.S.. Dude if you want to tell them what they can eat on your benefit program, then tell them how they can dress and what they can watch on T.V.. If your going to give benefits leave it at that. If the government wants to help keep poisons out of food then do that not tell someone what they can buy, that is available to everyone else, for food on your benefits program.
@ChiefJustWalks Right brother. I see exactly what you are saying and if you need $20 and I am going to give it to you it really shouldn't matter if your buying crack or twinkies. Just so long as I get my $20 back next week. LOL
If there is a unsustainable social and economic cost to people consuming junk food then yes, of course government should intervene. But the intervention should not be restricted to those dependent upon public subsidy for their nutrition. It should be applied equally throughout society.
@Thrust Conservatives justify these restrictions on public health grounds. If those grounds are factual and reasonable (and not just an excuse for humiliating poor people) they should apply universally.
@SunshineGirl It's not just poor people on food stamps ma'am nowadays. Half the country is on it. Things are different now. You ain't seen nothing yet. Some people are about to be humbled.
Let people buy what they want. The money is already on their cards.
For raising health care costs, what difference does that even make? Doctors and hospitals already way overcharge anyways, not like it will every be affordable.
And that you can only buy fruits, vegetables, bread, dairy and meats.
You see them walking out of the store with a bunch of ribeyes and porterhouse steaks.
No. Its a waist of time and just adds more expensive and convoluted bureaucracy.
People complain that people on SNAP " BuYiNG StEaK and LobStEr". Sure some do but most dont and who cares one way or the other. They clearly dont understand how food stamps work. It cost the taxpayer the same no matter what they eat. They get so many dollars to spend and the more expensive food they get, the less food they get. Its a nothingburger issue.
As far as junk food goes. Again you have a set amount to spend. Our broken ass country and fiod supply has made it that junk food is the cheapest food. So again, they often choose it because limited spending limits pushes you to go for the cheapest calories most often.
Maybe we should stop pickjng on desperate and poor people and start targeting rich fucks who milk the rest of society dry.
@Zonuss I think it's because security and freedom are two different things it takes different ways to manage. If you want more security you are going to have to give up some freedoms. If you want more freedom, it means giving up some security. You're not safe when you're free cos anything can happen. Likewise more security means you have to trust the govt not to overstep your rights and we've seen where that goes.
Freedom sounds good in theory until you realize it's a brutal world out there and people want the feeling of safety so they start voting against their own self interests.
There's a way to maintain both but America says policies are either liberal or conservative and can never be met both ways. Like pro lifers are never going to admit their policies are killing women and babies so instead of just not liking it but supporting choice because it's the most logical thing to do, we now have insidious laws against women.
That was just an example. Through policy changes we could have both but people go with emotions, not logical.
Anyone who has a problem with a person on food stamps buying snacks...................but has no problem at all that Musk is now a Trillionaire and does not pay a dime in taxes..............is a full member of the brainwashed cult.
@anythingoes477 a person being for both or against both.
And before you take what I'm saying negatively, I'm neither for nor against snacks purchased on the snap card.
After all this country is full of people who do not eat healthy. I was one of them, age and illnesses changed it. Some which could have been avoided had I eaten right.
@Zonuss Even people with a high income eat chips and soda. It doesn't mean everything they buy is going to be unhealthy. People should be allowed to have a treat, especially if they are low income.
