Divorce: do I need a lawyer if we have no assets or kids?

So far I know I'll have to wait out the year separated before I can have it done. I rent. He rents. No kids. We have our own vehicles and split the household stuff when he moved out. I just want this done as cheaply and quickly as possible.

EDIT - I am no attorney so take this as my personal observation...

If there are no assets to split, it would make no sense to hire attorneys.

Usually the reason people bring in attorneys is if the couple cannot agree on how things will be split up, assuming there is much to even split.

In a "no asset" divorce, hiring an attorney would typically cost more than the household stuff is worth.
That was the case when I divorced, we didn't own much of anything, neither of us had any real earning potential aside d3ad b3at jobs so easy divorce.

But in any case, getting attorneys involved just makes for a long, messy divorce.

No, you do not, you can go to your local courthouse and file without and attorney. I do not know where you live in the world but in the state of Ohio, USA when you go to a courthouse to file for a divorce on your own there is the Legal Aid Society that helps with the filing process free of charge.

Start at your courthouse and if you and your ex-to be are in agreement then it is easy filing and all you have to do is to pay the filing and court fees.

Good luck.

Doesn’t sound like it, assuming there are absolutely no investment assets. I see you’re in Canada. Lots of courthouses in the US have pro se information packets available so people can try to navigate it by themselves. Maybe your jurisdiction has something like this.

When i went to file we just ditched the whole financial side because it wasn't an issue for us .. idk how long you were married or what issues you will or won’t have filing.. if you are of equal financial status it shouldn’t be a problem .. but that's just me guessing

Find the forms ( original petition & final decree) on your state e-file portal print it sign it have him served or hand deliver it, both sign it, return it to the courts and when your court date comes up the judge will ask you both about assets, children, etc, just tell him or her you have none. And if your paperwork is all in order they will grant the divorce right then and there.
I thnk you still have to hire a lawyer to legally divorce even though splitting no assets. But, y'all do not ha e to hire separate lawyers. Just have one to draw up the proper papers to make it legal.

Have to be careful if you do talk to a lawyer. There's some that will try to convince you to make it a battle for their own personal gain even if you have nothing to fight over.

I believe if you look online you'll find some places that do it online...I'm not sure what they charge though...
Some states do not allow a "no fault divorce" because it cuts lawyers out of easy profits. But if urs does.... simply contact a No Fault divorce lawyer...... yes the advertise that way. It may not be speedy because usually they bundle cases so on a day in court he or she can get thru maybe 20 at once..... but it will be cheap. Sometimes as little as $99. In 30 days..... if you don't sleep with him or reconcile.... it's final.

Just make sure you have no joint bank accounts or loans, like car finance. Or even rental agreements.. Seperate everything in advance..
Maybe try googling the rules for the state where you live. There may be differences.
