Divorce: do I need a lawyer if we have no assets or kids?

So far I know I'll have to wait out the year separated before I can have it done. I rent. He rents. No kids. We have our own vehicles and split the household stuff when he moved out. I just want this done as cheaply and quickly as possible.

Doesn’t sound like it, assuming there are absolutely no investment assets. I see you’re in Canada. Lots of courthouses in the US have pro se information packets available so people can try to navigate it by themselves. Maybe your jurisdiction has something like this.
