Oatmeal, still a thing?

Weird question, my mom and I were discussing this, I have no idea why. Do kids still eat oatmeal? You know, the Quaker instant oatmeal in many different flavors? Or maybe good old-fashioned oatmeal?
If they do, is it regional? In other countries other than US?
I have a collection of microwavable bowls that my grandmother got by saving Quaker oatmeal labels or something. We use them almost daily for heating food in the microwave. They are color-changing with hot or cold food.
Just curious, as my son is grown and flown and never liked oatmeal anyway.

No idea if kids like it these days, when I was a kid I didn't eat it at all but I'm a huge fan now. I got some free package at store recently that had dried raspberries in it but also glucose syrup, it was good but I decided to buy separate dry raspberries and mix it with plain oat flakes and chopped almonds with no added sugar and it's great for breakfast.
I guess it's something an adult appreciates more than a kid, especially when they have the alternative in the form of sweet so-called cereals like Cheerios, Nesquik balls etc.

@CrazyMusicLover I have a rule about never eating anything with the word balls on it.

I don’t have children but I enjoy oatmeal. I use the original unflavored oatmeal cooked for 6 minutes and poured directly over a layer of frozen blueberries. Top with brown sugar, cinnamon, and chopped apples. I think it’s really good.

You don't have children but you enjoy oatmeal? A recent study using oatmeal as the only source of food for 200 female participants over a 30 day period of time, concluded that a woman of child-bearing years has no chance of getting pregnant from eating oatmeal. I guess I'll try something else.

@Softandsweet2 sounds good, i may try it.

I tried, my kid has always been grossed out by the texture so its a no go. She's tried it every few years for better part of a decade and a half l, even the sweet flavored instant prepackaged ones.

She doesn't hate the flavors of the instants, she wants to like it so bad because she deemed it healthy [the OG unsweetened kind], but it totally makes her gag. So I only buy oatmeal and cream of wheat for me, and she teases me about it being old people and baby food.
Nursegirl · 51-55, F
@Starcrossed yeah my kid couldn't stand the texture, also

I'm in the UK and I buy supermarket own-brand oats from Aldi or Lidl. In the Summer I use them as a base for home-made muesli and in the winter make porridge in the microwave with unsweetened cocoa. (I'm diabetic so I weaned myself off sugar)

My wife has oatmeal quite often. And I do sometimes.

There is plenty to be found in the grocery stores here, so people must be buying it.

As for serving it to kids, I do not know whether that has changed.

I don't know about kids but i love oatmeal, either as porridge or flapjacks. I make instant oatmeal for a fraction of the price of those sachets or pots by blasting plain oatmeal in a blender for a couple of seconds then adding hot milk and honey in an insulated mug, a quick and easy breakfast.
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
I eat oatmeal almost every day, but from what I've seen from my daughter's generation no.
smiler2012 · 61-69
@Nursegirl 🤔cannot say what kids have in the uk but porridge is nice. we use to get it in pots from the supermarket and it is just as nice as made in the pan
mssweetdreams · 22-25
when I was a kid I used to eat it all the time, I honestly love it's texture. It's not a big thing here in the Philippines and I don't know anyone in my class back then who ate oatmeal.
I eat grits, not every day but often. Oatmeal in the winter is great as well
Degbeme · 70-79, M
@Jenny1234 corn and hominy. It reminds me of our Cream of Wheat.

I am a fan of oatmeal, but my daughter does not like it much. She does like chia pudding, though, which I think is excellent as well.
JoeXP · 56-60, M
Do you mean porridge by any chance?

I have it every day!

Why is there no monument
To Porridge in our land?
If it's good enough to eat,
It's good enough to stand!

On a plinth in London
A statue we should see
Of Porridge made in Scotland

I've always loved oatmeal.

Still do, in fact.

On a cold winter day, there's nothing like a piping hot bowl of oatmeal for breakfast.
basilfawlty89 · 36-40, M
I eat oats/oatmeal for breakfast often.
Then again my mum's side is thoroughly Celtic, so...
robbie2499 · 61-69, F
I always had a "can" of oatmeal in my desk when I worked. It's a surprisingly filling meal.

I don’t have kids, so I have no idea if they still eat oatmeal. However, I eat oatmeal every day during the week.
Nursegirl · 51-55, F
I know many of us grown-ups eat it. Was specifically wondering about "kids".
akindheart · 61-69, F

AllAboutLaffs · 80-89, M

Yes, the kids I'm around all eat oatmeal.

In the summer, I enjoy overnight oats.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
Porridge oats? Yes, it's a staple in our household.
hunkalove · 70-79, M
I have oatmeal for dinner almost every night. With a sliced banana, raisins, honey, and cinnamon. I use the one-minute kind.
Adrift · 61-69, F
I always made the old fashioned oatmeal.
The small instant packets always had too much sugar in them and not very thick.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
It's a standard here in our house, along with Instant Cream of Wheat.
supersnipe · 61-69, M
I eat porridge as we call it maybe once a week. I tend to vary my breakfasts a bit.
Matt85 · 36-40, M
i think my sisters eat it. it sposed to be healthier than cereal.
Lostpoet · M
I still eat oatmeal although I didn't like it as a kid
FoolishLuna · 56-60, F
I like steel cut. Topped with berries and Greek plain yogurt
Ravens80 · 46-50, F
I still love oatmeal.
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
I like to put cinnamon in the water first before I add the oats, usually I just add a pinch of brown sugar and some milk.
In oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, it's very much a thing!
FloorGenAdm · 51-55, M
I liked the apple style with cream.
HumanEarth · F
We just harvested 40 acres of oats
Some ..
My friends’s kids do, during cold weather. Otherwise they eat cold cereal.
swirlie · 31-35
I make oatmeal everyday for breakfast except I don't use instant oats. I use the old fashioned kind that are mixed with other grains and need to be cooked on the stove for about 20 minutes and not microwaved. Then I add heated skim milk, fresh blueberries, sliced banana and I take about 20 minutes to eat it.
kindredks · 61-69, M
We eat steel cut oatmeal from time to time.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
I had stone ground oatmeal at Panera this morning.
swirlie · 31-35
@samueltyler2
Is Panera the equivalent of Rikers Island where you live? Nice that they serve their 'guests' what we eat here on the outside.
faery · F
Idk about kids but I love my Irish oats in winter
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
Our kids and grandkids like dinosaur cereal
Ferric67 · M
Yes, people still eat oatmeal
swirlie · 31-35
@Ferric67
Well, I guess your counter-argument satisfies the people aspect of this discussion, so I stand corrected.
Ferric67 · M
@swirlie try my recipe next time, it's delish
Add some walnuts, chia and flax seeds too, a splash of nutmeg
Topped with a drizzle of Manuka honey 👍
Bon appetite mademoiselle
