If i was to use the self checkout, I should be given a discount
FloorGenAdm · 51-55, M
@nedkelly Instead they got you paying them a nickel per bag.

Bad!
1. They take away jobs (which is what they were created for).
2. They are a nightmare to run (the "overseer" clerk (who has to override them constantly), as well as the customer ("unexpected item in bagging area").
3 They make it super easy to steal things (which causes store shrink, which, in turn, causes stores to raise their prices to compensate).
4. While they are "ok" for small purchase (10 items or less), they suck for larger orders.
They cost stores more (theft, inconvenience, maintenance) than they "saved" in labor (costs).

@shuhak cheaper to pay a pensioner security guard £8 an hour than a cashier £10 an hour working late night.
shuhak · M
@Picklebobble2 No store I worked at would do hire a security guard (too cheap). Our night crew staff was "store security" (all 5 of them). We had to stock/face the entire store, watch the customers, change prices, unload trucks, AND check out customers (we shut down the self check at night to limit theft).
Matt85 · 36-40, M
They are quick
it goes basket, scan, bag (technical issue)
as opposed to basket, conveyor, scan, ramp, bag
but like I said there is always some issue and you have to call someone over
Another positive is that sociaphobes like me don't have to experience people, something which at the same time is a little sad

I refuse to use a self-checkout. They don’t pay me to work there. And I’ve told several workers that when they suggested I use them…lines formed at the one regular checkout and 3 of the 4 self-checkouts were standing idle. I walked into one Walmart Neighborhood Market and did my shopping. Went to check out and it was all self-checkouts except a couple. I asked a worker where’s the cashiers. She said “Is this for a business purchase that is tax-free?” I told her no and she said she couldn’t check out my groceries and that I would have to do it myself. I told her they didn’t pay me to work there and someone else will have to put those items back in my cart. I was walking out and heard one young person say “Attitude”. And thought “Yes I have a spine to stand up for something that isn’t right.” My only regret was not loading the cart with ice creams and other meltables.

@GBPackersFan There is that but when the self checkouts go wrong they can go wrong in a big way :)

I won't use them.
I prefer at least some personal service and don't want to help put people out of work.
Though to be honest I don't like supermarkets full-stop, very much due to of their policies over the years to remove as much choice as possible, to "hollow out" town-centres, and to wipe out not only local independent shops, but also local independent suppliers (farmers, bakers, etc.).
Though the franchise chains (Central, etc) are becoming as bad with the last policy, the head offices of some ordering local branches to stop selling anything made locally or regionally.
Anyway the supermarkets are now being threatened by the onslaught of companies like Amazon.
......
One British supermarket company, Booths, is removing its self-service tills. They have very many customers who prefer to be served by human beings not machines, and it also helps meet a widespread reversion from bank cards to cash, at least for everyday and low-value shopping.

@Nimbus Thankyou!
It, and Internet shopping generally, has certainly made the supermarkets think.
How much of a threat it really will be to them is hard to tell, because so far at least Amazon is not primarily a food retailer, and most shoppers like to see the food before buying.
The main supermarkets do now have delivery services summed up by slogans like "Click & Collect" and "Freshly clicked"; but these are delivering from their local supermarkets.
Probably, Amazon and e-Bay are more dangerous to non-food retailers, even the specialists supplying specific leisure and hobby requisites.

They are more convenient in my opinion, but im sure have resulted in a lot more theft. Ive accidently forgotten to scan a few things at a...lets say a very large retail store lol. the alarm never went off so i just said never went back in to pay for it, ha

@cherokeepatti i agree, and they're not going to loose it.

@Virgo79 Walmart’s CEO has made so many stupid decisions. I don’t know if the same one is there as when I was working but they decided to remove the fabric departments, not sell guns, and other popular items. Big mistake, they lost a lot of business. Walmart was the to-go place especially in smaller cities to buy fabrics and sewing supplies. And a lot of people came to buy not only guns, but ammo, hunting and camping supplies. It seemed like the CEO was clueless about what customers wanted. They had to learn the hard way that they needed to put it back and they did, so they spent some more money setting up displays etc. They need to get back in touch with their customer base and listen to what they want and will buy.
Virgo79 · 61-69, M
@cherokeepatti i remember right after the terror attacks ours stopped selling guns, like right when they may be needed.
I lost all faith in Wal-Mart after that.
I just now came out of one, self checks closed in this one too.
First time i been shopping there there this year😂
And i made it quick as possible

Useful if you have bar codes, but can be a hassle for items that don't have them and aren't easily found in the store lookup. I use them when buying a small number of items with bar codes.
The,self checkout also doesn't let you select a number of the same item and scan once, it makes you scan each item individually aand place it in the holding area, reminding you to leave scanned items in the holding are rather than scan one item several times.

@DragonFruit Indeed, there is room for improvement.

I thought I’d mastered this, but no.
I got overconfident because I know what bagging area is now.
I put everything through, payed by credit card, and got a receipt.
Only to be stopped at the door by the security staff. He checked the items against the receipt, nothing wrong. So he said the alarm had gone off because I had been in the store too long. Using that autopay, I think!
Not perturbed , I went again another day, only to have my credit card refused by the autopay. A human had to come along and get the autopay to accept it.

I avoid them if I can. I would rather see more people employed, and I actually enjoy interacting with cashiers.

FloorGenAdm · 51-55, M
The behind you people in line seem to be more pushy and/or aggressive and they don't trust you by receipt checking at the door...otherwise it seems to go quicker.
Nimbus · M
@FloorGenAdm Good point.
exexec · 70-79, C
I use them always if I have just a few items. My complaint is that I scan items faster that the machine can keep up, and it keeps telling me to place the last item in the bag. I've already placed the item and am scanning the next item. Still, I save time by using self checkout.
Zaphod42 · 51-55, M
If it’s one or two items, I don’t mind. A full cart, there better be a line with a human ringing it all up or I’ll leave the cart right there and shop somewhere else. That’s the main reason I won’t shop at the Walmart in Las Vegas…no humans working checkout at any of the lines
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
Awful. The ones in my nearest store will not recognise my bag. So I have to transfer all the items from my basket into a pile before repacking them in my bag. At least two items per shop will not be recognised, so the attendant has to come to over-rule the computer. Only two tills are staffed and they have enormous queues from everyone wanting to avoid self service.
Nimbus · M
@SunshineGirl What a palaver.
JovialMoose · 51-55, M
When do we get to complain about the people who order online and have it ready for pickup or delivered to their car or home?
Nimbus · M
@JovialMoose That's a point, I never thought of them.
I admit I use them all the time, as others have mentioned it gets me out of the shop quicker but I know they take away jobs.
Nimbus · M
@BritishFailedAesthetic Exactly, they don't lower the prices, just keep the profit.
I did it once when I was in a hurry and couldn’t wait in the queue …
I can say that it helped a lot …

Retailers have decided they hate their customers. A big trend in my area is to only have self checkouts with machines that make no sense at times.

If it gets me out of the store quicker then great. Y’all can stand in line an hour if you want to. Fuck that.
@Nimbus some work fine and some have too many glitches. I just hate standing in line for an hour with five people in front of me with a cart full of shit and some dumbass cashier who want to carry on a full conversation with every single person causing the line to move deathly slow. I got shit to do, get me the fuck outta there.

I’ll use them if I only have a few things, but my luck won’t hold for a cartful. Besides I actually kinda like the human contact thing with a cashier. A little chit chat, a chuckle, a familiar face. It reminds us we’re part of a community. I think we should value that more.
