Bad!
1. They take away jobs (which is what they were created for).
2. They are a nightmare to run (the "overseer" clerk (who has to override them constantly), as well as the customer ("unexpected item in bagging area").
3 They make it super easy to steal things (which causes store shrink, which, in turn, causes stores to raise their prices to compensate).
4. While they are "ok" for small purchase (10 items or less), they suck for larger orders.
They cost stores more (theft, inconvenience, maintenance) than they "saved" in labor (costs).

@shuhak cheaper to pay a pensioner security guard £8 an hour than a cashier £10 an hour working late night.

@Picklebobble2 No store I worked at would do hire a security guard (too cheap). Our night crew staff was "store security" (all 5 of them). We had to stock/face the entire store, watch the customers, change prices, unload trucks, AND check out customers (we shut down the self check at night to limit theft).
