Yes I think so...however that empathy can be layered with disgust in exceptional circumstances (ie rapist, etc).
revenant · F
@okaybut I am " getting " that feeling...hard to explain with words though. " you poor desolate sorry excuse of a soul"..
okaybut · 56-60, M
@revenant Yes that is it. There has to at least be an evaluation.
revenant · F
@okaybut not everyone is in the Justice system.

I think even the most twisted had a good motive at one point…. But
Ultimately some rejected their humanity cards!
Justenjoyit · 56-60, M
@Fable
Dont think its just applies to men only

Yes, because true empathy, without judgment, changes our own hearts, and changes others.
revenant · F
@TheFlippantSide perhaps it does not though
@revenant There is no horror in this world that is worse for a parent than their child being murdered. Yet you see instances where the parents will face the murder in court and forgive them. That doesn't they condone the actions of the murderer. That doesn't mean that person doesn't deserve to be punished, even to the point of capital punishment. But that is empathy, and a true demonstration of humanity.
acpguy · C
Depends. If they are rapists, pedophiles or hurting a lot of people in bad ways then I guess removing them from existence is the correct thing to do and not feel empathy or remorse for having done so. But for good people that are having bad times then yes I feel empathy and would help them if possible.
BlueVeins · 22-25
Yes. You empathy should not be like sunflower butter; it should not grow thinner the more you spread it around.
revenant · F
@BlueVeins ahh but don't you think it does most times ? some people take all our energy till we are depleted of any.
AntisocialTroll · 56-60, F
This is something I firmly believe in but I'm currently unable to genuinely feel it and it makes me feel shitty, it's like they've won somehow because it's not who I am normally.
@AntisocialTroll You're one of the best people I know.
AntisocialTroll · 56-60, F
@TheFlippantSide I'm really struggling not to hate certain people, it makes me feel like I'm bad, I have mad fantasies about hurting them at times and I don't like it, makes me feel as bad as them.
@AntisocialTroll Everyone struggles with that, as we should. It's not meant to be a comfortable place for anyone. I'm sure Gandhi wanted to punch someone in the mouth, at some point. You have a heart of gold.
brokensignal · 46-50, M
I think given the nature of reality- IE suffering, chaos, pain etc… We should do our best to have empathy. I’m not even sure we understand the human brain enough to realize what exactly is happening with sociopaths/psychopaths… Like maybe something in their actual brain is broken completely. That being said we have to have the empathy for ourselves to know when to protect our heart/soul and remove ourselves from the damage someone with no empathy inflicts. Empathy from a distance in that case. I think it is important to fight hate in ourselves no matter what because it destroys us from within more than it ever impacts someone else.
revenant · F
@brokensignal yeah we should not put ourselves in harm's way..I do not understand the brain of a psychopath and perhaps it is a good thing !
SlaveEt · 36-40, F
Sure. However, if they are evil you can have empathy and still lock them up and throw away the key or pull the trigger. It just means I empathize with their victims more😉
revenant · F
@SlaveEt heart in the right place imo.
Most people do.
I think it's a sign of having ethics.
It's an optional attitude for people who are indoctrinated in individualism.
@revenant I don't so much wonder as count. In the past ten years the spending on housing in Germany has fallen by eighty percent. Homelessness has grown to surpass that in the USA during that time, one in eighty Germans is homeless by official estimates. That's a typical story in all countries except Singapore and Japan.
@revenant of course. I'm not going to be able to live indoors on what I earn. It's been that way since 1990, but I'm in the process of retirement anyway. I may even go on vacation some time.
revenant · F
@Roundandroundwego That is terrible. I met some people in Canada who became homeless just because they lost their job/going through divorce and then went on being unable to repay their mortgages or even have any money. Something is very wrong.
I believe so. But then in return don't expect empathy from them.
revenant · F
@littlepuppywantanewlife then why should you ?
This comment is hidden. Show Comment
Yes, but we shouldn't have to tolerate the behavior or hold space for it.
revenant · F
@TurtleEclipseOfTheHeart yes do not open yourself to abuse !
SW-User
Yes
But that doesn't mean you should let them have access to you
revenant · F
@SW-User well put
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
You don't even need empathy or compassion to do the right thing. Just have a good moral compass.
I believe people with empathy and no moral compass are a disaster in waiting. They can get easily manipulated and end up as accomplices of evil people.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@revenant I see empathy more as the mirroring or the ability to feel and understand what another person is feeling. Also being able to relate to the ways of how another person thinks about the world. So empathetic person could possibly connect to a disordered mind as well, twist the logic about what is right or wrong or even deny the existence of the right and wrong.

Also, I think there are many occasions where the person has empathy and compassion but ultimately they're cowards or paralyzed by fear. Simply they won't or can't do the right thing because of fear, self-protection and then beat themselves up out of guilt. That's not very productive or helpful either.

But okay, maybe I understand by the word empathy something else than others do. 🤔
revenant · F
@CrazyMusicLover I think there might be such thing as too much empathy..like you " melt" in some way with the other and cannot distinguish between the Other and You. Thus you could lose all identity and also provide too many excuses for bad behaviour. If you meet a bad person, it could be the end of you for they can suck all your energy.
That is the way I see it anyway.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@revenant Yes, yes, that's what I meant.
Nevaeh0081 · 36-40, F
I think so.

It's hard.

But yeah.
revenant · F
@Nevaeh0081 why is it hard though ?
Nevaeh0081 · 36-40, F
@revenant How can you empathize with people who do such bad bad things? Sometimes you really can't justify it.
revenant · F
@Nevaeh0081 ahhh yes..perhaps it is not your fault that you fail to emphasize because the actions were so vile.
Yes and no.

Hard to make the call for all situations.

Have empathy because someone who’s done horrible things is mentally ill.

But don’t have empathy for the things they’ve done.

That make any sense? 🤔🤷‍♂️

Lemme know
revenant · F
@Teggy it is a bit of the " forgive but not forget" mentality I would say.
@revenant oh yes I’ll take that explanation
revenant · F
@Teggy 😊 at your service Sir
Justenjoyit · 56-60, M
Just look at the The Swedish Prison System and how they treat people, I think a lot of countries should learn from what they have achieved.
revenant · F
@CrazyMusicLover Perhaps the mentality on the whole is meeker and more group conscious than in other countries ?
Justenjoyit · 56-60, M
@CrazyMusicLover Because they treat people like humans regardless of the crime
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@CrazyMusicLover Yeah we tried that here at the women's prison for murders etc. The women just walked out the gate and didn't come back until the police brought them back. The prison has since changed its policy and there are secure measures to keep the baddies on the inside.
bookerdana · M
Individually...hold my calls ☎️

Generally yes...we are all in the same boat
bookerdana · M
@revenant True, though the paradigm is forgive those who do evil to you,its sometimes a real strain...yet I've seen storiesof Moms who met with their son/daughters murderer and forgave them..btw not related but I hope you have a great Easter
revenant · F
@bookerdana They are grand human beings. Would I be capable ? I do not know. Perhaps yes and perhaps no. Hey Happy Easter to you too !
bookerdana · M
@revenant I think that would be the feeling of 99,99% of humanity..the Shadow may say Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men....who knows what good there might be?
val70 · 51-55
Not everyone. Try to have Darwinian thoughts on the matter
revenant · F
@val70 valid point
Convivial · 26-30, F
Nope... Like trust, empathy should be earnt
pdockal · 56-60, M
Yes but sometimes there is nothing to be done
Eddiesolds · 61-69, M
I do but , there are some that i just dont.
No. Not everyone deserves empathy.
Empathy yes sympathy no
I can have empathy, however--depending on the circumstance--that doesn't mean I condone or advocate the person.
revenant · F
@BrewCityBarfly You can understand but does not mean you agree..yes
@revenant I was thinking about some I've known who got into trouble and were looking at doing time. I can empathize with their fear and their plight, but the bottom line, they made a conscious decision to do what they did and I can't support that.
revenant · F
@BrewCityBarfly fair enough. You are not their mother after all.
gol979 · 41-45, M
No. Same as trust.

Empathy is putting yourself in someones shoes and understanding their point of view. Some acts carried out by humans/institutions are so abhorrent and calculated how can you empathsise?
Chattermanuk · 46-50, M
Nope not for me. Too many people blame others for their actions, its always someone else's fault. Nope its not, you made that choice you suffer the results of your actions.
revenant · F
@Chattermanuk ah true..lack of self responsibility
ElRengo · 70-79, M
Funlov · M
No everyone makes own choices chooses their own road path in life when you become an adult you know right from wrong so no
Nevaeh0081 · 36-40, F
@Funlov ln a sense. What if they're sick and not all the way there in the head? It would be really hard for me to empathize with people like that, but I understand the reason to.
Funlov · M
@Nevaeh0081 yes for sure
ABCDEF7 · M
Yes, but you should also consider the importance of your time and energies.
revenant · F
@ABCDEF7 indeed.
SW-User
Yes but don't disregard your own feelings and thoughts
icedsky · 51-55, M
Hard not too
icedsky · 51-55, M
@PoetryNEmotion l can usually shut it off for those people.
Eddiesolds · 61-69, M
@PoetryNEmotion Those things dont deserve a thing.Just a bullet. So disgusting.
@Eddiesolds I know. They are the dregs of society. That is why I commented. Some people deserve a slow, agonizing death not empathy.
Beatbox34 · 31-35, M
I wish I didn’t. It just fucked me up further.
Ferric67 · M
Within reason and under the right conditions
No. Some people don't deserve it.
SW-User
If empathy is due, yes
SW-User
That's a novel idea.
Adstar · 56-60, M
When it is needed..
exchrist · 31-35
To the extent possible
That all depends on their history, we shouldn't take 'everybody' at face value.
revenant · F
@Nihiless hmm yes...some can trick us and exploit our tender feelings.
@revenant No that's not what I meant, in other words, some people have committed heinous acts and deserve no empathy.
revenant · F
@Nihiless agree.
Elanor · F
No I don’t have empathy for pedos or cold sadistic killers, animal/child abusers.

They deserve to rot in hell.

@Fable You see a little kid crying in a corner. You can have both sympathy and empathy. You feel bad and desolate.

Then you see the little kid has knife hidden behind his back....
