You don't even need empathy or compassion to do the right thing. Just have a good moral compass.
I believe people with empathy and no moral compass are a disaster in waiting. They can get easily manipulated and end up as accomplices of evil people.

@CrazyMusicLover interesting ! compassion and moral compass.

Although many would agree with you that having empathy entails having an inherent moral compass as well.

@revenant I see empathy more as the mirroring or the ability to feel and understand what another person is feeling. Also being able to relate to the ways of how another person thinks about the world. So empathetic person could possibly connect to a disordered mind as well, twist the logic about what is right or wrong or even deny the existence of the right and wrong.

Also, I think there are many occasions where the person has empathy and compassion but ultimately they're cowards or paralyzed by fear. Simply they won't or can't do the right thing because of fear, self-protection and then beat themselves up out of guilt. That's not very productive or helpful either.

But okay, maybe I understand by the word empathy something else than others do. 🤔

@CrazyMusicLover I think there might be such thing as too much empathy..like you " melt" in some way with the other and cannot distinguish between the Other and You. Thus you could lose all identity and also provide too many excuses for bad behaviour. If you meet a bad person, it could be the end of you for they can suck all your energy.
That is the way I see it anyway.

@revenant Yes, yes, that's what I meant.
