Too high a calorie intake, and not enough calorie burning. It really is that simple 😁
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
@Whodunnit It has been proven though exercise strengthens you , you cannot exercise enough to burn off all the calories you consume even following dietary recommendations for calorie intake.
It's about what you eat and how efficiently the body burns what you put into it.
You can't out exercise a bad diet

@Pretzel Not always. Often it’s eating too much of the wrong foods.

Surprised to see a reasonably respectful and thoughtful set of replies, there's more than one correct answer and I agree with what a lot of people have said.
My diet is poor (not helped by other factors) but I do feel like my body just stores/handles calories differently. I don't know if there's a 'fat gene' as such but if there is, I have it 🤣

Ryannnnnn · 31-35, M
@helsbels I know people where it goes to different places so you don't notice as much. I found eating a meat, fish and eggs centered diet got rid of my inflammation and my stomach got flatter in a couple weeks, I didn't eat as much due to the protein and I drank water, coffee, tea and ginger and honey tea
Not exersisng enough and fat genes. Believe it or not without the fat gene you wont get fat no matter what you eat. Youll burn it all off somehow. If you have the fat gene youre pretty much screwed and have to be carefull what yoi eat.. Even something like soda can make people fat if they have the fat gene. Which shouldn't happen cus its just sugar and water. And even if you are careful what you eat... You will still get fat because of the fat gene. Theres nothing that can be done exept doing exersise.. And even exersise wont stop you from getting fat if yoi have the fat gene youd have to workout consistently evryday. Easier said than done. You see it all the time. But most people are lazy. So they rather stay fat. I love exersise its actually fun for me. But even if i stop working out ill still stay in shape. Crazy eh? I even eat like a fatass and still cant gain fat. Ive tried to get fat ans i didnt gaun a single pound in fact i got skinnier. Some people are just born to be fat even if they eat healthy ans exersise. Its mostly genes. If you have the fat gene get more exersise or stop eating fast food and stick to vegtables. Tho the people are also right that theres alot of crappy food outhere. I heard they put a chemical in cheese to get yoi addicted to it.
View 1 more replies »
@Rainandforest yes mostly it is genetics. Primarily it is genetics. Food and lack if exersise are not the full cause of getting fat. It is primarily the fat gene. Most people will blame the food or lack of exersise but actually it is mostly genes to blame. If either yoir mother or father is fat so will the child. It doesnt even have to be both if just one parent has the fat gene theres 50/50 chance that that child will enherit the fat gene and get fat. Even if they eat healthy even if they exersise. Ofcourse exersize will help the best. a good diet is never going to be enough compared to exersise... But the question is can yoi keep it up now? Most think one workout a week is enough and thats enough to lose wieght but its not it must be done everyday especially if yoi have the fat gene.. Its really that simple. Dont get confused. The world is much simpler. But one should always eat healthy no matter ehat gene makeup
Rainandforest · 26-30, F
@akshamaeh7331 i see..
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
@akshamaeh7331 It's metabolism not a "fat gene" some people's bodies are able to metabolize food at a faster more effective rate than others. Also thyroid issues which is relevant with metabolism
CestManan · 46-50, F
One might say poor diet and lack of exercise.
I wonder just how much truth there is in that though because with my crappy diet, I should weigh 400 pounds by now.
Plus when you see people in their late teens or early 20's who have 100 or more pounds of excess weight, SURELY they didn't eat their way to that weight THAT early in life. Who would even want that much fat and sugar that it would take to gain so much weight so soon?

@Spoiledbrat True some are more entertained by food than others.
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
@CestManan Of course they ate their way to that, it's the only thing that makes sense. When I was 17 I weighed 92kg/202 pounds and it was steadily increasing, I noticed how fat I got and cut back on some things and remained that weight for a good while, now I weigh 80kg/176 pounds

I think it depends on how simple or complex your trying to be with this answer.
But trying to go a middle ground...
I think a mega huge factor is people learned to eat for heavy manual labor jobs... which needs high calories and then we got very far away from manual labor jobs and only kept increased the high calories... because high calories foods are cheaper to make, easier to market, and easier to get people addicted to... and therefore more money for those making them.
Like lots of process foods used to be made with a decent oil... not great, but also not horrible.... now almost all cheap food is made with an oil that has a horrible omega 3 to omega 6 ratio, which in large quantities is absolutely horrible for humans... but it's cheap and most convenient and saves the most money.
Also, some loss of impulse control, which is an entire different subject.
So to summarize...
↑ Manual Labor
↑ High Calorie Foods
Followed by
↓ Manual Labor Jobs
↑ Computer Jobs
↑ High Calorie
And cheaper foods equals
↑ Profits
↓ Healthy

It can be a mix of eating too much, not being active, depression/anxiety, hormonal imbalances, and/or insulin resistance issues. Not to mention cost of healthy food vs foods that aren’t terrible for you. Eating food on the go when you’re busy and pressed for time.
I also believe that we were all conditioned to believe that we must eat 3 meals a day plus a healthy snack once or twice a day. However that isn’t at all true and something I wished I would have learned in my teens.

@NewBeginnings7790 how would you know your fat as hell. I eat alot yet i cant gain weight. I even eat pizza cakes and butter and grease. And still i aint fat. How can i gain fat? I actually need fat.
NewBeginnings7790 · 41-45, F
@akshamaeh7331 again it could be related to your genetic make up as well as hormones. There are a lot of hormones in the body that play a key role in these areas and if they are the slightest bit off it can make you gain weight or not be able to gain weight.
@NewBeginnings7790 my hormones are out of wack rn. My friend and i used to talk about that. I can't gain weight because of hormones? Never hearda that that. and yeah i want to gain more weight.
Ynotisay · M
Eating too much of the wrong foods and not exercising. Not enough sleep can contribute as well. Genes can play a certain role but exercise and food most always applies even there. So 42% of the U.S. population has chosen to ignore the realities with most usually having more medical conditions and a shorter life. What's crazy is that obesity, at the levels it is now, is a relatively recent occurrence. If you look at old photos you'll see a very different scene.
RocktheHouse · M
@Ynotisay You think all non-fat folks are exercising and dieting? Yes, exercising and dieting will help a person control their weight, but there's far more to it. Overweight individuals struggle with their weight because their body doesn't burn fat like it should. Even after going on numerous diets and starving themselves, and exercising, most overweight people still struggle with their weight.
Ynotisay · M
@RocktheHouse Sorry but I can't buy that. Obviously there's not one contributing factor. Some may have certain medical conditions or a predisposition. But that's the very few. For the VAST majority it comes down to food habits and exercise.
If what you're saying was true then the level of obesity would be constant over the decades. It's not. Far from it. It would also be comparable across the states. And the world for that matter. It's not. Outside of some island countries, and I think someplace like Kuwait or Saudi Arabia, the U.S. is the most obese nation in the world. And that's because of diet and exercise. Full stop. It's not an indication of someone's worth. Or their happiness. Or attractiveness. But is an indication of diet and exercise choices in most all cases. And we, as a society, have now accepted it and even push back when people speak the truth about what it is and what it does. And what it costs. Big, big money.
And to toss it out there, I don't use words like "all."

No one’s gonna say but I’m gonna say it : lack of self-control. Obviously there’s poor diet , inactivity, genetics etc. But I’ve met skinny people with a horrible diet that were sedentary but their portions were small . Instead of eating 5 fried chicken pieces they would eat just 1 or 2. I’m sure there are other factors but I think that’s the main one.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@deadteddy MSG added to processed foods and some drinks is an appetite stimulant. They call is a flavor enhancer but it doesn’t enhance the flavor.
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
Not realizing that the processed/fast food you eat contains as much sugar as cookies, candy, or soda pop.
Not understand the connection between what you eat and how it affects the body.
Lots of misinformation on what is a healthy diet.
Depression at following and believing bad advice that brings opposite outcome,so you give up.
Eating too high carbs, too low fat, too much sugar and too many chemicals addtives.
It really is about what you eat
Unpopular opinion now a days
Our own metabolisms and body shapes have something to do with how much and how fast we lose weight,as well.
It's easy to give up when you see little results for changing your diet.
A very small precent of the population has metobolic imbalances that makes it impossible to lose weight.
Whatever the reason we need to remember they have feelings, are human, and making fun of others is not okay.

I like to bake but i realize that i can't eat the stuff.
Flour, fat, salt, and sugar all contribute to generating fat and water retention. Ideally one should just eat grilled and boiled vegetables and a little meat but the willpower is not there. About all i can manage is to be strict five days a week and go nuts the other two. Butter and cream are my nemesis.

She doesn't do much tho other than keeping a clean house she smokes and she gets tired out quickly when we go somewhere. But she doesn't eat much I know that for a fact so don't know how she keeps the weight on other than not enough exercize..

People eating too much with too little activity. It's no surprise that the average American eats way more calories than needed, which is why the average American is fat.
You can see the same thing with pets. They get fat bc people always give them food and they don't have to be active, and the weight piles on. And then there's the never ending list of excuses

Carbs and sugar they are addictive
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
@Barny52 And they are in everything processed.
So, unless you seek out high priced alternatives or make everything yourself it's hard to avoid.
I think the food industry should only be allowed to add so much sugar(very small amount) and abolish high fructose corn syrup all together.
And you are right they are addictive and that's why the food companies do it, you'll come back for more.
