Eating too much of the wrong foods and not exercising. Not enough sleep can contribute as well. Genes can play a certain role but exercise and food most always applies even there. So 42% of the U.S. population has chosen to ignore the realities with most usually having more medical conditions and a shorter life. What's crazy is that obesity, at the levels it is now, is a relatively recent occurrence. If you look at old photos you'll see a very different scene.
@Ynotisay You think all non-fat folks are exercising and dieting? Yes, exercising and dieting will help a person control their weight, but there's far more to it. Overweight individuals struggle with their weight because their body doesn't burn fat like it should. Even after going on numerous diets and starving themselves, and exercising, most overweight people still struggle with their weight.

@RocktheHouse Sorry but I can't buy that. Obviously there's not one contributing factor. Some may have certain medical conditions or a predisposition. But that's the very few. For the VAST majority it comes down to food habits and exercise.
If what you're saying was true then the level of obesity would be constant over the decades. It's not. Far from it. It would also be comparable across the states. And the world for that matter. It's not. Outside of some island countries, and I think someplace like Kuwait or Saudi Arabia, the U.S. is the most obese nation in the world. And that's because of diet and exercise. Full stop. It's not an indication of someone's worth. Or their happiness. Or attractiveness. But is an indication of diet and exercise choices in most all cases. And we, as a society, have now accepted it and even push back when people speak the truth about what it is and what it does. And what it costs. Big, big money.
And to toss it out there, I don't use words like "all."
