Why are racists and anti-wokeists now offended over a black woman playing "Ariel" in the little mermaid movie?

Yes dark skinned mermaids exist, they're in African and indigenous folklores and legends. So why a movie showing a black mermaid is suddenly now a problem?
I’ve always been amused when people are "offended" by people of color playing fictional characters after an entire cinematic history of white actors using dark makeup to portray people of color—historical figures—who actually lived. 😳

@bijouxbroussard Cosby Show is a good example. I think Family Matters and Fresh Prince had similar issues.

At the end of the day, I think i just want people to be who they want to be and not feel like they have to walk between two worlds. And more importantly I don't have a template for what I want them to be. I've always been a supporter of individual expression. I do a lot of things white people traditionally don't. But nobody accuses me if being less white. I think everyone should have that freedom. Whether they live the "community expectations" or break them, so long as it's by their own choice.
@ViciDraco That’s a very good point, too. Nobody white is less so for enjoying jazz, Motown, R&B, even hip-hop (has anyone accused Eminem of "trying to be black” ?) One of the great ironies is, after a history of seeking freedoms including from stereotypes, some people are embracing them.

@bijouxbroussard you are right.
AJS30 · 31-35, M
Because the character is white and should be played a white person. Wanting accuracy isn't racist or bad. Not wanting white characters needlessly replaced/stolen isn't racist or bad. Let a white person play a black character and watch people lose their shit. The people who control Hollywood do shit like that on purpose. They could easily create new characters for black people but steal white characters instead for spite. Let black people have their own characters instead of stealing white characters. The left screeches about cultural appropriation but supports it when it comes to white people.
@AJS30 Agreed. “We now continue with The Jackson 5 Story, starring the Osmond brothers.” (Cheech and Chong)

Yeaaaah

Except Disney's former depiction of the Little Mermaid, and Anderson's original story, weren't "African and indigenious folklores."
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
Nothing makes a racist more uncomfortable than realizing they are becoming a minority. This is why they cheered the "Get woke, go broke" mantra at first. But now that they realize the "go broke" part isn't happening and that going woke is actually turning out profitable for companies they are getting jealous that they are no longer getting catered to. And they realize, deep down, that they aren't getting catered to because they don't have the numbers. And so then they turn around and get really loud about it to make themselves look bigger than they are, like a wild animal puffing itself up to intimidate a foe.

Bc changing an already existing character's skin colour is just virtue signalling and not representation
I think its a little immature and closed minded to label differing opinions over something like this as just "racist" and pretend to have a moral high ground against anyone who disgrees

When Annabeth in the Percy Jackson movie casted Alexandra Daddario, a white girl, as Annabeth
People complained she inaccurately had black hair, when in the books she was supposed to be blonde

And when they announced the Percy Jackson series, Annabeth was casted as Leah Jeffries, a black girl, and now when people complain it's inaccurate, it's only because they're racist

If a white person was casted on a black character people would complain but that's just completely different i guess
@Theyitis so is that why they complained about a different hair color? She was white too.

People have NEVER loved change in any way
This is no different

No one complains about spiderman being black because they made him his own character and story and person

But changing pre existing characters, usually as an act of virtue signaling, is when people complain and get annoyed
Whether it be hair color or race or whatever
@PetalsOfLilac
If a white person was casted on a black character people would complain but that's just completely different i guess
Actually, that’s "been there, done that", in fact.
@bijouxbroussard i literally just said casting a white person as a black character is wrong in the first place, you don't need to try and prove me correct about that, I'm well aware
Because Ariel is a white character. It's not like it's a new story with a black mermaid.
Also, it's the double standards. White characters are regularly race-swapped, but this pretty much never happens to non-white characters. If that did happen, the media would admit it's racist.
@Elessar The Anti-SJW crowd just likes complaining. I don't think they should be taken seriously about anything. They also said Captain Marvel and Black Panther were "woke" movies. This was after like twenty MCU films where the main hero was a white man. One day there will be a gay hero, and even though all the other MCU heroes have been straight, Conservatards will say Marvel went WOKE again.

But the thing is, there actually is a lot of anti-white racism in media. And when the only people calling this out are Fascists, it does drive white people to Fascism. Especially when they feel like there's no other place for them. It's kinda like how Palestinians support Hamas because they're the only ones standing up to Israel.

I didn't see this uproar when white characters played everyone in the live action version of "The Last Airbender", even though the original characters were clearly not white. What happened to "keeping to the original" then? The fact is that these are just racists who might not even be aware of their own bias. White is the "norm" to them, and it's so shocking to see that being switched out. Besides, I don't know why they care so much, when this is a children's story. Something they would never even care to watch if there was no controversy. Have you seen the compilation videos of little black girls watching this? The excitement in their eyes for being represented? These racists can't realize that white people have had this representation for so long that it doesn't even seem special to them anymore.

I give Disney a lot of shit but they got it right on this one since it helped expose some people for who they really are.

Cause the character has always been white. Nobody is bothered by the fact that they made a black Spider-Man cause Peter Parker and Miles Morales are different characters
Rolexeo · 26-30, M
@ViciDraco No not really, people get invested in stories and the characters in them. But you think they shouldn't view the character different if you literally make them look nothing like how they used to.
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@Rolexeo because a character's looks are aesthetic. The substance is in their personality and actions.
Rolexeo · 26-30, M
@ViciDraco *sigh* swap Ariel with the hunchback of notre dame, see if people view it the same way, *hint* they wont

@DoctorGerbils Would you be ok with a white person playing Black Panther?
Nanori · F
Yeah make a new movie/animation about them instead of messing with an already established character
Elessar · 26-30, M
@Nanori They complain also when they do, see the black elf on the new LOTR series. Brand new character, but how dare they cast a black actor for a fictional role lol
Nanori · F
@Elessar both side are equally stupid
Elessar · 26-30, M
@Nanori all sides are equally stupid, I'm tired of making exceptions for the centrists 🥴
Coppercoil · M
In the future all animated shows wiill have a digital option to chose the race of the main character. People can pick what they want to see. Provlem solved.
Is a black Hamlet OK?

Woke?
Tokenism?
Hamlet is archetypical and has no race?
Hamlet is obviously a white dude, this is all ruined?

Papaa Essiedu @ RSC.

My brain hurts thinking about this.

ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@CopperCicada Ariel was blonde before the Disney movie. Based on the book the movie was adapted from.
@ViciDraco So is liking the red haired one bad on that grounds?
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@CopperCicada looking the red haired isn't a problem. Raging against the casting of the new one seems a bit infantile. There is a big difference between preference and outrage.
democrats just showed the world how racist and hypocritical they are.
and they got the hide to get on the internet and label others racist..lolz
#icky brown ppl get off marthas vineyard.

_virtue signalling dems SANCTUARY cities...
I dont understand it at all and I think its stupid. All people...even ones of the same races and ethnicities come in all different shades and all Beautiful. I think Halle Bailey was a good choice myself.
I’m mixed black, but maybe it’s because the little mermaid is part of European folk tradition and lore not African lore. I understand why they don’t like it.
TeirdalinFirefall · 31-35, M
I think the reason is mostly just because Disney is super insincere about it because they were recently called out last year on unfairly paying their female workers less than the male workers, and among other issues. So people are primarily just mad at how hypocritical Disney is by trying to use peoples races and genders as brownie points // controversial points to attract more news and attention rather than actually trying to be inclusive.
bookerdana · M
There is no reason except the obvious one....there are real mermaids🤔

Anyway haters are ALWAYS gonna hate
Another box office dud for a movie that did not need to be remade
I could personally care less.
Theyitis · 36-40, M
They would say they just cast a black woman to appease the woke, she’s not really the best woman for the role, she’s actually a crappy actress. They’re picking crappy actors and actresses and making crappy movies just to shove their social agenda down our throats. That’s what they would say.
nudistsueaz · 61-69, F
😂 ..... I had no idea anyone was offended.
gol979 · 41-45, M
Mermaids are fictional. Ariel is fictional. If people are angry about the pigmentation of a fictional cartoon then act accordingly. Cancel the peedo network/disney subscription
Rokasu · 36-40, M
The new Nickelodeon TMNT movie did the same thing with April except she "acts" like a black girl now.

Ariel is going to be a white washed black girl. Might as well just keep her white.
Sidewinder · 36-40, M
It doesn't matter if it's the 1920's, or the 2020's. There always has been, and will always be something to offend somebody. It's an undeniable fact.
@damselfly Yeah. 😆
Do I have to burn my Santana Abraxas album because there is a naked black woman on it?

{@peaceandnamaste] 🤷‍♂️well there is no problem really unless you are a small minded bigot of course
MougyWolf · 36-40, M
Why not create it's own story and character , though? Wouldn't that be better?
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@MougyWolf not as profitable. Corporations have tried that road and its far more risky. Sequels and reboots of existing IPs tend to be much safer. They go where the money is.

Half of these people complaining about it are going to see the movie anyway.
Elessar · 26-30, M
Oh, at least they moved away from the rings of power or the new game of thrones series

Idk, it's not like the original disapears or anything.

@Ceinwyn Yeah, but a trailer just got released and the racists are all worked up again.
In fact, I didn't know that.

I could care less about fictional characters/creatures, people are going to reboot stories over and over anyway, rather than come up with anything genuinely new / original
