Why are racists and anti-wokeists now offended over a black woman playing "Ariel" in the little mermaid movie?

Yes dark skinned mermaids exist, they're in African and indigenous folklores and legends. So why a movie showing a black mermaid is suddenly now a problem?

Cause the character has always been white. Nobody is bothered by the fact that they made a black Spider-Man cause Peter Parker and Miles Morales are different characters
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@Rolexeo I'm down for black Peter Parker so long as he's still kind of a nerdy photography geek from queens. Skin color doesn't have to change the character. Miles was a good way to introduce someone with a different background.

@ViciDraco What's the point of making him black? It's just disingenious. It's normal for people to want characters to look more or less the same.
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@Rolexeo because you found a good actor for the part? Why does the skin color matter?
Rolexeo · 26-30, M
@ViciDraco And they couldn't find a white one? It matters for the same reason it was terrible how the characters in the Uncharted movie were casted. It's an inaccurate portrayal of the characters
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@Rolexeo i don't understand why the skin color matters though. Does eye color matter? Hair color?
Rolexeo · 26-30, M
@ViciDraco yes!
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@Rolexeo that just seems really weird that that stuff matters. Unless the story is actually about aspects of physical appearance it is an inconsequential detail.
Rolexeo · 26-30, M
@ViciDraco If you change those things the character is not the same, it's basically a different character. Lmao wtf is so hard to grasp? 😂
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@Rolexeo because none of those things define a character or how they should act or what they should do. It's not important to the story at all in most cases.
Rolexeo · 26-30, M
@ViciDraco So if we took your friends and family and completely altered their appearance to the point that they no longer look anything like they used to that isn't going to bother you? Get real, and if you say it wont than I doubt you have a real connection to them.
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@Rolexeo should we not allow character customizations in story based video games?
Rolexeo · 26-30, M
@ViciDraco Your created character in a videogame isn't an official character lol
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@Rolexeo changing their looks is only going to bother me until i re-establish who is who. Many of my friends and coworkers are online only and i have no idea what they look like. None of my family has considered me a different person after having my leg amputated. My father's hair went completely gray over the pandemic when j was my traveling to visit and that didn't bother me.
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@Rolexeo what defines an official character? This character had a default look in all advertisement leading up to release.
Rolexeo · 26-30, M
@ViciDraco Lol you seem not to grasp human connection at all, or are being wilfully obtuse. Your relatives still look like themselves, there was just a gradual change. Your online friends dont mean anything as you've never seen them
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@Rolexeo that's a pretty insulting take all around. And false one.
Rolexeo · 26-30, M
@ViciDraco No not really, people get invested in stories and the characters in them. But you think they shouldn't view the character different if you literally make them look nothing like how they used to.
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@Rolexeo because a character's looks are aesthetic. The substance is in their personality and actions.
Rolexeo · 26-30, M
@ViciDraco *sigh* swap Ariel with the hunchback of notre dame, see if people view it the same way, *hint* they wont
