Why are racists and anti-wokeists now offended over a black woman playing "Ariel" in the little mermaid movie?

Yes dark skinned mermaids exist, they're in African and indigenous folklores and legends. So why a movie showing a black mermaid is suddenly now a problem?

Because Ariel is a white character. It's not like it's a new story with a black mermaid.
Also, it's the double standards. White characters are regularly race-swapped, but this pretty much never happens to non-white characters. If that did happen, the media would admit it's racist.

@Elessar Look how far back you had to go to find an example.

@BohemianBoo Wait, have they started portraying him as a middle eastern as of recently and I didn't notice? It's possibly the most race-swapped character in history considering how old Christianity is compared to Disney.
@Elessar Jesus has been race-swapped by every culture that has had Christianity. There are plenty of depictions of Jesus where he looks Arab, European, Asian, Sub-Saharan, and so on. People usually don't care because it's already been normalized. But notice how in recent history, this generally only happens to white characters.

@BohemianBoo Jesus was actually a different color each day so he could represent everyone. That's why the Romans couldn't find him without the help of Judas. 🤣

Uh, yes it does? Like, a lot?
@OggggO Can you give some examples?
The only one I can think of is the Ancient One from Doctor Strange, and that was done to not offend the Chinese.

@BohemianBoo Sure, here's a few: https://blurredbylines.com/blog/whitewashing-movies-hollywood-2000s/

I admit, at the time I watched some of these I didn't even realize they were cases of whitewashing. For saying how it tends to go unnoticed, whereas anytime it's an originally white character being cast black the anti-SJW will be loud enough to be heard all around the world
@Elessar So there are a lot of stretches here. They have the Avatar movie listed and claim the three main heroes are white. They look pretty Asian to me. Meanwhile, the main character in the cartoon is white. So this is really a white to non-white swap.
Now, if I'm going to be charitable, maybe what they mean is that the three heroes are all light-skinned Asians, whereas in the cartoon, two of them were more dark skinned.

But then they also list Bane, saying that he's Latino in the Batman comics, but was played by a white actor in the Dark Knight Rises. Even though Bane has always been portrayed as having white skin, basically being a white Latino. It seems like, for some reason, they're saying Latino to English is a race-swap.

Looking through the list section, they're doing this a lot. Egyptians and Colombians are ethnic groups, not races, and many of them are white.

@BohemianBoo You have a point; but I don't think these people care much about the ethnicity vs race difference, just like they don't care about whether it's an established originally white character being swapped or a brand new PoC character, especially considering they were complaining about black elves (and in particular, one character created specifically for the series they were watching) until literally one week ago.

In any case 90% of people (or more) wouldn't even know about the existence of this movie hadn't it been for the whole fuss about the black mermaid, so rest assured Disney et al. will continue to engage with this, as it's evidently an effective way of passively marketing their movies and thus generating a bigger profit.
@Elessar The Anti-SJW crowd just likes complaining. I don't think they should be taken seriously about anything. They also said Captain Marvel and Black Panther were "woke" movies. This was after like twenty MCU films where the main hero was a white man. One day there will be a gay hero, and even though all the other MCU heroes have been straight, Conservatards will say Marvel went WOKE again.

But the thing is, there actually is a lot of anti-white racism in media. And when the only people calling this out are Fascists, it does drive white people to Fascism. Especially when they feel like there's no other place for them. It's kinda like how Palestinians support Hamas because they're the only ones standing up to Israel.
