I wouldn’t label them at all, people’s beliefs are their own, just different than my own that’s all. My mother and sisters have different political, social and religious beliefs than my own but we still love and respect one another.
sree251 · 41-45, M
@needsmilk808 What if your sister is a policy-making government official who wants the US to go to war and get people killed?
needsmilk808 · 56-60, M
@sree251 lol that’s interesting, she actually is on the left and does think we should go to war in Ukraine and others, thankfully she’s not a policy making government official.
sree251 · 41-45, M
@needsmilk808 You said: "thankfully she’s not a policy making government official."

Your beliefs always impact others. They govern the way you live, and your lifestyle in society is as impactful as a large mole in the wrong place on your face. It's jarring to others.

The most triggering stuff is centered around politics and religion.

I totally avoid politics as much as possible as for sure half of your audience will be eliminated right out of the gate no matter what side you are on. But for some that is what they want, so OK.

For religion, I think my views on that would disenfranchise me with the most extreme conservative Christians but with the majority of Christians and even atheists I am OK because even if they don't agree with me, they consider my sexually liberal view of Christianity to be refreshing.

I do have 3 pages of blocked members who were too mean or creepy when I first joined, but I prefer to remain friendly with whomever I can. Some are not going to like you no matter what. I get it.

Thank you for such a great question!

I've been dealing with it, I don't hate anyone in fact I love even my enemies as the Christian faith encourages me to do so...I've seen so many fall, and it breaks my heart to pieces, I do encourage them to let Jesus help put them back together again if they're willing...But some are not and wish to continue to let the voices tell everyone that I am such a bad person for sinning on a daily basis when I believe He made Him He who knew no sin to become sin for me so that I might have the righteousness of God...God has cleared me through the blood of Jesus Christ, and yet those who hear voices say I did this and I did that even when it wasn't me but a demon that made me have a bad dream or something....I don't hate them I never could, no I have compassion on them and face the music, I must be courageous and face the scorn like a little kitty cat trotting along a dozen fierce German Shepherds....It just makes life a little harder that's all. Gotta keep my chin up and accept that I am a forgiven sinner washed clean in the blood of the Lamb....That being said, there is some hostility towards me from my kids friends...I want to love them not fight with them or give them a reason to hate me....It's not their fault it's the schizophrenia that's the true enemy not them, I see the soul inside, and I hope for their salvation, and if not I hope my kids know the difference between God is good and the devil is bad....and not to fall into the pit...Believe half of what you see and even less of what you hear... I believe in love for all people...I try not to judge, I forgive once twice, seven times seventy seven times a day....I try to travel light and lose the baggage of animosity.

@NativePortlander1970 Government doesn't kill people. It's a conceptual device. People kill people.
Luckylu · 61-69, F
@sree251
Government doesn't kill people.
Yes people kill people, even in war, but if you are enlisted in the military and given an order. You follow it. That does not make you a bad person. In some government's military you can go through the proper channels to refuse an order you think is unlawful but what is unlawful is determined by the government. If the government decided that they have to take action against another group of people and you are part of the government's military in many cases you do not have a choice. There are some countries who still force their citizens to serve in their military. This does not make them a bad person. This is a choice of the government not the person. If they refuse, they could be court martialed and possibly shot in some countries. If you refuse to serve in the military when it is a requirement, you can be jailed, and fined or worse. This is government ruling, same as commands given to military members. In the US, new recruits are told to consider the command of their officer to be the command of the US President. If they are instructed to kill most governments don't care if you consider their decision wrong. This is why so many military members who are involved in military action come home with mental health issues because they are often made to do things they no longer believe are right or good decisions and have no choice but to do them.
sree251 · 41-45, M
@Luckylu You said: "Yes people kill people, even in war, but if you are enlisted in the military and given an order."

Yes, this is why the government should not be treated lightly. It is formed by people who give up the right to their own lives to live in among each other in the society they form. The power to fight wars must not be given to the government. Its function must be limited to setting up infrastructures for use by the people.

I don't care who you for, have sex with, or pray to! As long as you don't try shoving your beliefs down my throat! If you're a good person, we'll get along fine! Just bring beers!!
Happens a lot here. I can get along with anyone as long as we respect we can have different opinions.

No, people are unique and complex.

For instance, there might be someone who agrees with everything I say, but we don't click.
Diotrephes · 70-79, M
@Matt85
No people are unique and complex.

Punctuation marks are your best friends when writing. Use them.

Compare =

No people are unique and complex.
That means no one. It excludes everyone.

to

No, people are unique and complex.

For instance there might be someone who agrees with everything I see, but we don't click.

For instance, there might be someone who agrees with everything I see, but we don't click.

After an introductory word or phrase, a comma is best.

I was just being a grammar-Nazi but it is really important not to fall into sloppy writing habits because it affects one's professional and business image. We all make countless typos that change the meanings of what we intended to express.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
It's a really good question.

The 'right on' answer would be to say no and that it doesn't matter. Let's be honest though because it kind of does. Politics is about values and that is ultimately about ethics and what we see as right and wrong. It's hard to have a partner or close friend who had incomparable values.

It's even more important when your political beliefs are a significant part of who you are.

Just because someone has different values to you does not mean that they are evil. They don't have no values, they have different values and it's a good thing to try and understand them instead of name calling.

Also, though important, isn't everything. I've met people who have very similar politics to me that I thought were appalling people. Also people with very different politics who I respected and/or admired.
ImpeccablyImperfect · 51-55, F
@Burnley123 that’s kinda what I think too…there have been many in my life whom I have admired and loved, despite their political/religious ideals and even some core values which have been differing. 🤷‍♀️
They’re still some of my favourite people, even if they’re what I’d call ‘wrong’ hahaha
smiler2012 · 56-60
[@impeccabblyimperfect] 🤔basically in a nutshell anyone is entitled too an opinion or belief no matter how strange or illogical it may sound too others 🤷‍♂️
@smiler2012 Okay. So since you're okay with me believing that babies need to be sacrificed for the crops to grow, you'll be okay with me doing it, right?
smiler2012 · 56-60
@LordShadowfire as i have already said this is a hypothetical comment and i also said opinions are that but the is that line in the sand too taking an opinion too far where then the suggest is not acceptable🤔can i ask you why are you doing this trying to push me in a corner on this it is though you want too create conflict i think i stated my opinion and my view and do not want too fall out over a silly hypothetical question like yours so can we just leave this now please
@smiler2012 I'm not trying to create conflict. I'm trying to show you how having certain opinions does in fact reflect on character. If I have a certain opinion, perhaps I take a certain action as a result of that opinion.
MaryDreamilton · 46-50, F
Just because people agree with me, that doesn't mean to say they are good in every way. Just because people disagree with me, that doesn't mean to say they are bad in every way.
Adstar · 56-60, M
Only God is Good....

A person would only becomes Good if they became perfect like God..

A person beliefs can either make them forgiven or unforgiven..
easterniowegin · 51-55, M
I think actions make a person good or bad. What actions do they take and for which reasons??

Identity politics has pushed the binary in almost every subject. This helps the leaders brainwash many followers. Too many people are emotional decisionmakers and are influenced by gaslighting. It isn't necessarily a moral thing, but it creates strong feelings in certain people. They've made it all personal.

- if you do xyz, then you are/aren't 'this.'
- that person voted a certain way, they are for/against *insert emotional cause*.
- if you don't agree with me, you are a **ist.

Those who can see through the charade, are typically more logical in approach. Those who are emotionally driven are easily persuaded and end up feeling good to be part of their group, because they are 'more virtuous.'

The deeper the powerful people make the divide, the more vindicated and even arrogant the followers become. Because they know they are 'correct' they choose to disassociate and even cancel their opposition.
BobbyMoeven · 51-55, M
I used to label people when I was younger and discount those devoted to religion and labelled those people as dumb for believing in completel fiction ....

But then , as I got older ,I realized that I was missing out on some really great thinkers and really great folks ...

I like to think of that change in myself as wisdom ..
@BobbyMoeven It's like the old saying goes. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day. You can find wisdom in the unlikeliest of places. I myself have cited scenes from Family Guy that sneak in very smart lessons.
Harmonium1923 · 51-55, M
Tough question. I don’t have religious or political requirements or expectations for my friends. But I do require them to be people of good conscience who care about others and particularly those who are less fortunate. That’s different, but not entirely unrelated.
ImpeccablyImperfect · 51-55, F
@Harmonium1923 of course, we can’t absolutely discount the relation between the two…I guess my question was more pointed to how easily people can harbour/grow some kind of ‘hatred’ or animosity towards another, based solely on different belief systems.
in10RjFox · M
It may not necessarily make them a good person for it's subjective. But if they try to thrust their beliefs on to others, that would make them a bad person as they wish to destroy the belief system of the other and place theirs in its place.
in10RjFox · M
@sree251
It's not just human parents, mothers in the wild do condition their offspring to react to perceived danger.
your statement has a fallacy .. false equivalence, where you mean mothers in the wild are inhuman. Also we are not talking about Mothers in the wild, but educated and modern parents who are the society. Mothers in the wild have to condition to perceived danger, but don't have the capability to brainwash their children, and they are the ones who beyond a point don't control their children and let them in the wild.
sree251 · 41-45, M
@in10RjFox You said: "Mothers in the wild have to condition to perceived danger, but don't have the capability to brainwash their children, and they are the ones who beyond a point don't control their children and let them in the wild."

"Mothers in the wild" (e.g. bears, cougars, etc) are not human. Yes, they have to condition the young to perceived danger. You made a good distinction: brainwashing.

Human parents do brainwash their children mainly because we are psychological beings living in different cultural settings; especially, here in America. China is different: one culture.

It depends. I have a core set of convictions, and I can't see myself having a relationship of any kind, with someone who doesn't share the same.

For instance, I would not be able to get along with someone who's extremely religious. Or Scientologist 🤣

“Beware the irrational, however seductive. Shun the 'transcendent' and all who invite you to subordinate or annihilate yourself. Distrust compassion; prefer dignity for yourself and others. Don't be afraid to be thought arrogant or selfish. Picture all experts as if they were mammals. Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity. Seek out argument and disputation for their own sake; the grave will supply plenty of time for silence. Suspect your own motives, and all excuses. Do not live for others any more than you would expect others to live for you.”

@BlueSkyKing Pretty good words. Apparently, he has loose lips.
That's a tough one...I'd like to think that that most people believe what they believe because they at least believe they're morally right. I'm not religious but I certainly don't think religious people are bad or stupid. If you believe life happens at conception then obviously you would be pro life. I try not to judge people based on their political leanings or religious values because people hold those beliefs for a lot of different reasons. I do believe in some universal values that I think transcend the political/religious and that's what I usually base my opinion of people on.
No. None of us can see what’s inside anyone else’s heart.

@Colonelmustardseed Find out. Ask a question and find out.
@sree251 It’s easy to say or do all the right things. Predators do it all the time.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
That would surely depend on how far from acceptable the beliefs were.

Someone who believes that slavery is acceptable and that it should be reintroduced for instance can in my opinion be regarded as a bad person. Certainly so if they continue in those beliefs after having the harm they would cause explained to them.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
Anybody’s religion or beliefs where politics are concerned are personal to them, it doesn’t make them right or wrong because they’re theirs. They might not align with your own but that doesn’t make them an any lesser or greater person than yourself.
Adults have a responsibility to understand their beliefs and to become the best people they can.
You aren't really blameless when you're anti socialism and you participate in a country that makes war.
gol979 · 41-45, M
They can do. If opinion breaks into the sphere of the physical thats when it usually becomes a big issue.

If "agree to disgaree" is applied then even the most contentious subjects can be discussed.
No. I may find their beliefs ridiculous but only if they act immorally would I consider them to be bad.
sree251 · 41-45, M
@Adeptlinguist So, you make yourself the judge of other people. Doesn't that make you a bad person?
@sree251 Where did I say that?
sree251 · 41-45, M
Beliefs make people bad if they support the harming and killing of people for good reasons.
2ndtimeguy · 61-69, M
It makes us living breathing flesh and blood! Everyone has beliefs of some type.
Plasticbag · 100+, M
I’d like to say it doesn’t matter but there are limits
Strictmichael75 · 61-69, M
No, not at all, people are people
RoxClymer · 41-45, M
depends on how extreme the view is
It's more complicated than that. Basically, your beliefs represent your core values. You wouldn't choose to follow a religion that allowed for the ritual mutilation of baby boys if you had a moral disagreement with that practice.

But at the same time, we humans are good at dissociating and compartmentalizing. That's why someone can choose to follow a particular politician, claiming that politician is a good representative of their demographic, even as said politician does things which prove the opposite.

Never underestimate the power of human delusion.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
I don’t judge people unless the beliefs are harmful. Like racist, anti-Semitic, hateful, etc.

@ImpeccablyImperfect I've just Googled 'Liberal' as relating to Canada (which is where your profile says you are)
Answer : no.
In the UK, Tories aka Conservatives represent the right wing of the political spectrum : the party which broke up then sold off all of the utilities, public transport and State assets to various shady chums of theirs many of which had vested interests. The party which is trying to break up and sell off our National Health Service, and with other of it's chums owning almost all of our media, is terrifyingly good at fooling ordinary people that this party - supported and funded by numerous shady or unethical figures - is on their side.
