What was an absurd rule you had to follow when you were growing up?

No bikinis until junior high.
Three minute shower then the hot water was turned off.
@Pinkstarburst 🖤🤗
Fluffybull · F
@Pinkstarburst I'm in the shower less than five minutes. I don't have a lot of time in the mornings and it doesn't take long to get clean. I wasn't all that dirty in the first place.
Bang5luts · M
@Pinkstarburst some nipples showing astound that house lol. If you only had 3 minutes of hot water to shower with.. (the nipple comment was in reference to @WonderGirl1's reply lol
I had to wear a bra even though I didn't need one. I was told nipples offend some people.
@meggie where was this?
rhouse · 56-60, M
Nipples never offended me. @WonderGirl1
Bang5luts · M
@WonderGirl1 who the hell told you that!? They lied, actually, nipples do offend some people who can't stop staying and get caught looking and then deny it and blame the nipple owner. Plbt
That person needed to stop being a closet perv. Show them lay, all you want. Just make sure you click the little circle next to "Nudity" 😁
Niloo · 46-50, F
I was not allowed to tell my siblings that I was a witch and would eat them in their sleep🙄
Niloo · 46-50, F
@Niloo I love little you. 🖤🤗
@Niloo my friend. 🖤🤗
nedkelly · 61-69, M
Stop crying as men do not cry
nedkelly · 61-69, M
@pedrohedgerow I cried last year Liverpool won the English Premier League the bastards 😁
romper69 · 51-55, M
@nedkelly Best Premier League EVER 😂
pedrohedgerow · 61-69, M
@nedkelly As for Arsenal fans...😢
No bikinis, period. My parents didn’t consider them appropriate as swimwear. I was very modest, so it didn’t bother me. But my sister was grounded for borrowing a friend’s and sneaking out to a party in it. When she modeled, she got to wear them—but only for her jobs.
Bang5luts · M
@DarkHeaven yes ma'am I could already tell.. 😊that's why I like you so much. You're genuine!
@Bang5luts thanks. 😉
Bang5luts · M
@DarkHeaven 😁😊
never ever feed the cows before the chickens.
@DarkHeaven I'm glad your experience was better than mine, That Palamino jerk of a horse ruined them for me
@SHREKPage sorry.
@DarkHeaven oh its ok!! I am glad you have fond memories!!
I couldn’t watch Harry Potter because it was witch craft 💀🤣🤣
Sweetone46 · 46-50, F
Yes our church preached against it... I keep meaning to watch every episode now
@Sweetone46 I have never even seen it 🤣
@SweetNSassy Same, I couldn't watch any shows with witchcraft or magic in it.
pedrohedgerow · 61-69, M
Too many to catalogue,my parents were jehovahs witnesses.
@pedrohedgerow Oh, wow. I didn’t know that. 😳
have to shower cold once a week to build immunities
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
None of the boys could wear a hat or toque inside the schools. The girls could but not the boys. The girls could not wear pants to school. They had to wear skirts.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@hippyjoe1955 and it’s so cold in the winter
I wasn’t allowed to put my glasses on until I had had breakfast..

I still can’t fathom that one.....
Fluffybull · F
@TheSirfurryanimalWales Was the cooking in your house that bad.....? 😆😉
@Fluffybull aah....that was it...😅
InstructHer · 56-60, M
Short trousers only until nearly 15.
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
@InstructHer what about in winter
chrisCA · M
@Jenny1234 True. That would never fly in Canada. Lol
InstructHer · 56-60, M
@Jenny1234 all year round. It was school uniform for most boys in those days (usually until 12 or 13) and for church etc but my parents were traditional and I wore them always until I was old enough to be a "man". We don't get perishingly cold weather. The worst actually was getting my legs wet and cold in the rain.
meggie · F
No television allowed as we were supposed to either be worshipping or working
antonioioio · 70-79, M
Only allowed speak when spoken to
@antonioioio This was a common one back in the day.
antonioioio · 70-79, M
@dragonfly46 Spare the rod and spoil the child was common
No touching myself during church. Collect all brass casings at the range and bring them home. Never accept a car ride from the Sherrif’s deputy. No dry ice in the school toilets…just endless nonsense
I wasn't allowed downstairs, (because that's where the big screen tv was), as well as other designated rooms of the house...at the age of 13.
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
@AnonymouslyYours were they worried you would break something?
Most likely, but honestly I felt the primary motivation was control. I wasn’t clumsy or careless with mine or anyone else’s belongings.@Jenny1234
Never talk with guys who ride bikes, because some weird astrologer had told my parents that I'd run away with one 😂
@Caleidoscope Did you? I bet he had streamers in his handle bars. 🙂
@Pinkstarburst I got a lift from a guy once ,for a situation that almost looked like I was running away but I wasn't!
My parents were furious and they called the astrologer to fix it ,and he apparently gave a stone ,which I wore until college
SW-User
Just nonsensical stuff. A plethora of stupid weird shit.
SW-User
@cherokeepatti Honestly I'm drawing a blank because I learned to just not listen to them and tune them out. 😂
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@SW-User My ex’s mother had a bunch of superstition-based rules she thought everyone ought to follow. Don’t pop a blister during the daytime, wait till the sun goes down or it won’t heal up. I rubbed a big blister on my heel from walking and was at her house and she tells me this one and come sundown she brings the alcohol and needle so I could pop it. Don’t let cats in the house if you have a baby because they’ll jump up in the crib and sucked the breath out of the baby. That was just two of them. Eventually I became amused by them and started reading about superstitions in various locals.

I cant remember any... It's probably because all of the rules were absurd, or I was a good rule breaker... 🤦🏻‍♀️
@Soossie HA! Me too. 😂
I had to go through many many absurd rules all my life.

1) don't bath naked
2) don't keep longer hair
3) don't try to grow a beard
4) don't go out late
5) don't talk or chat to strangers online.(even if I was watching a youtube video)
6) don't talk to girls ( they don't hate girls but they thought I will find someone and run away with her)
7) don't go to other city.
8) don't travel anywhere alone.
9) don't bring home small animals.
10) don't fall in love. I can keep writing. 🤣😂
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
I wasn't allowed to stay up past 9 pm, even when I was in high school. 🙄
MrsRachelEvans · 26-30, F
@DearAmbellina2113 same here!
Northerner · 70-79, M
Wasn't allowed to leave the dinner table until everyone had finished their meal.
UpForItNow · 22-25, F
We had to keep our school uniform socks up with elastic garters.
Sweetone46 · 46-50, F
Go to church everytime the doors are open
exexec · 61-69, C
No really absurd ones, but the two that I disliked most: only one date per week with my girlfriend, even in summer, and no fishing on Sunday (which I got changed to allow me to fish if I made it to church in the morning and youth group in the evening).
@exexec My male relatives all fish, they liken the experience as being one with Gods nature. Good thing you eventually got to fish on Sundays. Maybe if you had sold your fish for tithe?
Lostpoet · M
No caffine or hot drinks (ever)
MrsRachelEvans · 26-30, F
He was right really! @MrsRachelEvans @Lostpoet
Lostpoet · M
@MrsRachelEvans I agree coffee would keep me up all night if I was a kid.
MrsRachelEvans · 26-30, F
@Lostpoet I only have it now in the mornings
tallpowerhouseblonde · 36-40, F
At senior school we were not supposed to wear skirts more than a few inches above the knee,no gum chewing and sensible shoes.I broke all three regularly.
chrisCA · M
No meat on Friday.
chrisCA · M
@DarkHeaven We were farmers, but my dad was did not care. Religion can be a silly thing.
@chrisCA yeah. sorry. 🌸 My parents weren’t really doctrinally religious. They’ve always been a faith kind of people, but not really dogmatic towards organized religion. I don’t really ever talk about that on this site but I feel like you would kind of get it.
@chrisCA religion and faith is just a dangerous topic and I usually just tap out.
MrsRachelEvans · 26-30, F
Always a skirt or dress to be worn and proper gartered stockings when I was older (like 14) not tights.
Jeffrey53 · 51-55, M
No running on the deck of pool, you have to wait 30 minutes to go in pool after eating
AirForce687 · 36-40, M
A bath every Sunday night ready for school on Monday, no excuses
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
None I can think of.
@ChipmunkErnie Thank you for your reply.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@dragonfly46 You're welcome, but I know it was kind of boring. I had nice, understanding parents.
@ChipmunkErnie No, not at all. Always appreciate ones answer. Glad you had understanding parents. Wish mine were more understanding.

Same here...
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
Did you have the necessary body parts to even wear a bikini before that? How do you define a bikini versus a girls 2 piece?
Bang5luts · M
No getting girls to jump off the top of the jungle gym at the school playground. 😪

No climbing up things you can't climb back down. 🙄

No driving on the interstate and definitely not sneaking off to Atlanta or the beach for a weekend before you're 18. 🙄🙄

We had to "pay bills" with our allowance. So dad would hand us like $100 in small bills but would charge us for rent, utilities, and entertainment. We might get to pocket like $10 for ourselves when it was all said and done.

Looking back, I don't think they were all that absurd.
Fungirlmmm · 51-55, F
@SwampFlower my parents did that to teach us about saving money. It worked too
BlueVeins · 22-25
@SwampFlower The allowance thing is super interesting. My parents paid almost everything, but they said I should pay for gasoline just so I'd get a sense for paying bills.
I had to eat all my dinner. Id literally throw up afterwards.
@DarlingSelah That was very popular when I was growing up. And if you cleaned your plate, you were rewarded with dessert. And they wonder why so many of a certain generation have weight issues. 😳
@DarlingSelah Same here, if I didn't eat it, it was at my next meal, cold.
SW-User
@DarlingSelah My parents used to force me too until once i couldn't help it and i threw up on the dinner table. They never forced me again, so good learning exercise for them i guess.
YoungPoet345 · 26-30, F
You can’t have sex until you’re 30
BlueVeins · 22-25
@YoungPoet345 Oh God. Did they just say that when you were young or do they still try to hold you to that?
YoungPoet345 · 26-30, F
@BlueVeins it’s unclear. Lol. This was my father who said this. I’m unsure how it holds now. We haven’t discussed it. I don’t live with him. We have a good relationship.
YoungPoet345 · 26-30, F
I do know, had I had sex in high school, he would have been very angry
BlueVeins · 22-25
I don't particularly remember my parents setting rules that were patently absurd, but my sister would always freak out on me any time I referred to a police officer as a cop on the grounds that it's disrespectful. What's disrespectful about it, I don't know.
For me it was no bikinis until college. For my daughter, 16.
You were lucky.
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
@Mamapolo2016 I’ve never heard of a no bikini rule.
@Jenny1234 Times changed REALLY FAST.
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
@Mamapolo2016 I think there are two other women on this thread who had the same rule
I had rules. My parents were strict and tough but every rule had a reason and none were absurd. Many I didn’t like but they were always happy to tell me the whys of them.
@dragonfly46 Sorry so long.
@DarkHeaven Thank you for sharing that. 🤗💙
@dragonfly46 🖤🤗
SW-User
I don't remember anything really. I used to behave well most of the time.
@SW-User Always good to see you here, take care. 🤗
SW-User
@dragonfly46you too 🥰
@SW-User Thanks ☺️☺️
Lostpoet · M
No swimming on Sunday. The devil controls the water.
wildbill83 · 36-40, M
@Lostpoet still trying to figure out what swimming on sunday has to do with a donkey stuck in a ditch... 🤔
Lostpoet · M
@wildbill83 I think it has something to do with if you think about having sex with your neighbors wife you have committed adultery.
@Lostpoet And all the other elements, no fun for you! 😅
No makeup until high school. I don’t think that’s absurd though.
@Spoiledbrat That one is unusual. Did you miss it at all?
saintsong · 41-45, F
I wasn't allowed to talk around my moms boyfriend even if it was cheerful news, because then the abuse would start.
@saintsong That's terrible. Sorry you went through that.
saintsong · 41-45, F
@dragonfly46 It was my mom who was silencing me, giving me the eye, stepping on my toes, telling me to be quiet around him. I don't know why she gave into him and why she didn't just take us away from him.
@saintsong Ive asked myself that sometimes too. Ive also had friends that needed those questions asked of them also.
