Why is a voter ID an issue

Serious question. Why is a voter ID of some sort an issue? I need an ID to board a plane. An ID is required to drive a car, buy beer, leave the country, open a bank account, etc.

I am not supportive of voter suppression. But I do want honest voting without fraudulent voters.

@MalteseFalconPunch I don’t know what you see but I see part A of a plan being executed.
And it was a direct address from the President, not a national ad council PSA

@MalteseFalconPunch it’s how it’s being sold to the public. We haven’t been told to do anything out of patriotism for decades dude.
We are following Chinas lead a decade later . All they have been talking about for a decade is patriotism .

Why would a free voter ID be discriminating! They are free! You have to have an ID to by alcohol or cigarettes to get a married, to get on a plane, why not to vote?
Because we can already use the IDs we have without making even more ID's.
How did Rump's 86 lawsuits work out for pointing to "fraudulent voters"??? Hard to find a reason to fix a problem even he can't prove exists.....isn't it???

Dude I just asked a question. I’m not jumping through your hoops. @anythingoes477
@Coldplay That's what I thought. Typical Rumper. Blow hard...but when asked for something rational, factual and intelligent to back the bullshit......then they're not gonna play that game anymore. Your rock is waiting......back under it "dude".

Everything you mentioned is a privilege. Look at the differences between a right and a privilege.

@PrincessVelvet Bearing arms is a right. Try getting a gun without an ID.
It’s an issue because of the precedent for voter suppression, especially of both women and people of color. Some states who were traditionally red have implemented new voter laws in what seems to be an attempt to prevent future “blue turnout”.
@Adogslife Like I said, you don’t get it, and I can see from your question I would probably be wasting time trying to explain it, but I’ll try. Yes, I can do all of those things where I live. But in the South last year we had to warn relatives to make certain they were still registered so that they received those ballots. In several (mostly black) areas names were being arbitrarily scrubbed from voter rolls. And considering the mass turnout in November the only reason anyone would feel the need to change the process now would be because they didn’t like who won.

So your saying, without doubt, that blacks were being purged from the voters registers? And this can be documented?
@Adogslife Yes.

Some people cannot get ID. My mother and aunt could not get ID's because of no driver's license and incorrect birth certificate. They have voter registration cards so they could vote.
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
@exexec no offense but I’m not going by “as I understand it” as an answer I can believe.
I’ll do my own HW on that.
exexec · 61-69, C
@AthrillatheHunt I would expect a wise person to seek authoritative answers. That is exactly why I wrote "in my opinion," since I am not an expert. I see very few (if any) expert opinions on SW, so all posts, including mine, should be taken with more than a bit of skepticism.
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
@exexec I’m not a doctor or beltway pundit, but I play one on SW. lol
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
For the same reason background ID to buy a gun is an issue.
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
I wrote the exact same thing. It’s a partisan issue.@MarkPaul
LadyBronte · 56-60, F
Its an issue because there are those who do not want honest voting.
EuphoricTurtle · 41-45, M
In my country we have a national ID card, in it we have our social security number, our tax identification and our voter number. Just makes everything easier.
EuphoricTurtle · 41-45, M
@AthrillatheHunt Portugal. The Citizen Card was developed about 15 years ago, before that you had to have different cards for different things (including voting).

@EuphoricTurtle Tudo bem?

@AthrillatheHunt Tudo fixe! 😉👍

21 million eligible voters in the United States do not have government-issued photo ID. And, for many, these IDs are very difficult to secure.

People have fought and died for the right to vote. Voter ID laws prevent people from exercising this right.

Accessing a photo ID is much more challenging for the young, the elderly, people of color, and people with low incomes.
Coldplay · 56-60, M
No. Not at all. I am not dismissive of the things you state. I am not at all in favor of suppression. I am not a Trumper, believe it or not. And I did not know your race. Where I live you can get a state ID. It is $6 and can be processed at a State License agency. I’m sorry if my comment offended you. I truly did not intend it that way. @zeeva70
zeeva70 · F
@Coldplay apology accepted. Where I live IDs range from $9-13. I've worked and volunteered with low income and minority populations. I know first hand that often getting an ID is out of reach for many or replacing it after it's been lost or expired. Not all of these people fall in this group but many do. Many face more pressing day to day priorities. It doesn't mean they're cheating when voting but it presents an opportunity for more privileged people to exploit this weakness. This is nothing new.
Coldplay · 56-60, M
Thank you and I do accept this. @zeeva70
Piper · 61-69, F
It isn't, really. Not to me, anyway. It's the particular kinds of ID requirements that some states have or are trying to impose on registered voters, that are sometimes burdensome for them to acquire.
spjennifer · 56-60, T
They should freely issue a National ID card with your picture on it, problem solved, when you go to vote they simply scan your card. Even with voter registration cards, those don't count as ID as they don't have your picture on it so you still have to present ID to vote in most places. Notwithstanding that according to some on here, we'll all soon have a microchip in us after the vaccine, lol 🥴
The intellectual dishonest people are the ones having issue
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
Should not be an issue.
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
I don’t have issues with voter ID, what I do have issues with is other new laws that were passed. Technically, if you read the fine print closely, the GOP in Georgia can now determine the election results by actions they can take.

I don’t understand how both gun control and voter ID are issues.
Both parties are dug in deep in these issues .
Coldplay · 56-60, M
I can get a state ID that is not a driver’s license. $6.

I don’t know the GA law on this.
zeeva70 · F
Voter ID laws target eligible voters who are less likely to have IDs.

Starting to sound like dictatorship.

If you vote here in the U.S., I think you should have proof that you're a U.S. citizen.

@CopperCicada what was wrong is you didn’t render into Ceasar what Caesar wants (money).
