Why is a voter ID an issue

Serious question. Why is a voter ID of some sort an issue? I need an ID to board a plane. An ID is required to drive a car, buy beer, leave the country, open a bank account, etc.

I am not supportive of voter suppression. But I do want honest voting without fraudulent voters.

In my country we have a national ID card, in it we have our social security number, our tax identification and our voter number. Just makes everything easier.

@AthrillatheHunt Portugal. The Citizen Card was developed about 15 years ago, before that you had to have different cards for different things (including voting).
