Anyone know cars? .battery light on and Engine oil pressure light

My actual engine light has been on for a while but some told me it's probably a faulty computer thing if there's no sounds and it's running fine. Well now my battery light is on and Engine oil pressure light. The car won't start at all.. nothing.

Is it probably a dead battery? Now my hood won't pop open too. Occasionally it gets stuck and won't pop up. If I call AAA, could they somehow pop it open?? I'm so stressed if this is a battery issue or engine. Any ideas???

Hey, I have dealt with many issues like this. I do see that this post is from awhile ago. Any updates? If you want to call AAA, they should be able to help. They have seen things like this before. 😊
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@SinlessOnslaught Its still on ..but drives fine🤔
@Coralmist It can be complex. I would recommend first calling local car parts stores and asking them if they provide diagnostic tools. Many of them offer it for free. They just plug a device into your car under the dashboard and it should provide an error code. Some of those devices offer more specific info than others.

Over here in Sweden, we have a lot of Volvos for some reason. I do know that on a Volvo, if the Engine Light comes on, the computer restricts the speed of the engine so that the car cannot be driven fast, but will allow you to limp home. But once you're home and you shut the engine off, the computer won't let the engine start again unless a mechanic bypasses the computer to fix the original problem that caused the engine light to come on in the first place. If you're already at home, this will require that the car be towed to the Dealership for repairs.

Word to the wise, if your engine light ever comes on while you're driving and the engine automatically throttles-back to restrict your speed, DON'T TURN OFF THE ENGINE, but instead drive right to a Dealership that handles your make of car and then turn off the engine in their parking lot to save yourself a tow!
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@swirlie I actually did know that. I wish they had continued that practice. Mid to late '90s Volvos are the best.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@SandWitch Oh very interesting, thank you
swirlie · F
@LordShadowfire
Ford bought out Volvo in 2006 and from that year onward, Volvo reverted to Ford's North American standard, which was not aluminum!
olderuncle944 · 70-79, M
If battery light is on most likely alternator oil light is very serious who ever told you check light means faulty computer is dummer than a box of rocks It means something is failing or sensor has failed when it comes on the computer goes into limp home mode and assumes its very cold weather and makes engine run richer to compensate when light comes on go to any parts house and let them scan it for you for free.

@olderuncle944
Doesn't matter anymore, her car was wrecked a few days after this post was made. Totally demolished apparently, folded up like a cheap accordion after getting rear-ended, so the battery light is no longer an issue!
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@swirlie It is fine in the front and even midway, but the back is pretty destroyed. I am wondering if they'll repair it or possibly replace the car.
olderuncle944 · 70-79, M
@Coralmist most likely replace it and from what i read thats not a bad thing
as long as you weren't hurt thats the most important part .
Justenjoyit · 61-69, M
Hopefully everything went ok👍
swirlie · F
Well now my battery light is on and Engine oil pressure light. The car won't start at all.. nothing.

This is a 'normal' condition!

That is precisely what you should see on your dashboard lighting when you turn the key to the 'on' position! Those lights then go out when the key is turned to the 'start' position and the engine starts.

The reason your car won't start is because your car is either not in 'park' or 'neutral' ...or the battery is totally dead!
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
If your oil light is on, check your oil, if you don't have any oil. DO NOT TURN ON YOUR CAR.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@uncalled4 Yeah it's never been too much of an issue because I just would wait until the next day to check my fluids, it pops overnight. It must be something gets stuck in the latching
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@Coralmist Could just need some oil, doubt that's a big deal at all.

If your battery is or was on it's last leg it will struggle through in normal warmish weather but the first cold snap will kill it off.
The oil light probably is just telling you the viscosity is broken down and it's time to change your oil. That's what mine does.
But yeah ... battery time.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@JimboSaturn I know right..they tried to get it and couldn't ..so could not help me and had to leave. It always pops up the next morning after trying, so they said to just call them again ....I could've already been jumped by now and all over a hood!! Ughhhh
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@Coralmist I've had to do the same, get that fixed. Gf has a Hyundai and I know people like them, but I think they're far from quality made, little things just rust out and fail. Example, the pistons that hold up the hood are gone and the thing just falls on you. This is bad because their shitty engine uses oil and I have to open it a lot. We also had to replace a pulley that rusted like we left it in the boneyard.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@uncalled4 yes my pistons on the hood no longer work... I'll definitely get the hood assessed when I bring it to a mechanic soon.
do the headlights , horn and radio work? if they do it's probably not the battery
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@FreeSpirit1 I didn't check those, I'll have to see.. thanks 🍀
@Coralmist Hope it's nothing serious
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@FreeSpirit1 I REALLY hope so too. Paying expensive repair at Christmas is not on my fun list. Ty ❄
Lilymoon · F
I asked a car guy he says check the oil, also could be faulty alternator.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@Lilymoon Ty Lily...oh I hate this
specman · 51-55, MVIP
Your oil pump is bad. You might have blown your engine already. Usually the check engine light is for your emission system. How do you know that you lost oil pressure if the car doesn’t crank? If the car is not running you will obviously not have any pressure.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@specman Maybe, but I've had that happen because the oil pressure got too low as well. In my case, one of the pistons needed re-ringed, and the car was burning through oil like American troops bringing "freedom" burn through civilian towns, lol.
specman · 51-55, MVIP
@LordShadowfire yes. Lol
Can you get your finger in there to unlatch it at the hood? It sounds electrical. Not my area, but depending on the year of your car at least isn't a huge expense.

If you know someone with a battery charger you can try that first. See if it'll charge and hold.
MarineBob · 56-60, M
Am I the only person who actually calls a dealer or mechanic for my employees cars
MarineBob · 56-60, M
@LordShadowfire luckily I've been blessed in the past few years to only buy newer vehicles, wasn't always that way now dealers must work on them. Hell on my personal truck if I even change the oil I void a warranty
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@MarineBob Those car dealerships just love throwing that stuff in there.
MarineBob · 56-60, M
@LordShadowfire then moan when I buy a vehicle 900 miles away
Jenny1234 · 56-60, F
CAA came to me at a plaza years ago and booosted my car battery. You can ask them when you call them if they can help you with opening the hood. I’m sure they could
GerOttman · 61-69, M
The check engine light is usually related to the cars emission control systems. Anything from a loose gas cap to a failed crankcase valve. Usually easy to figure out with a device that reads the engine codes. The reader is not very expensive and easy to use.

The battery can also be checked with an inexpensive multi meter. Auto batteries are nominally 12 volts but a good fully charged one should be closer to 13 volts, anything at 11 volts or lower is suspect. If you can get the hood open you could try to get a jump start. If the car is not running, you have no oil pressure and the oil light will be on. If the car is running and you have an oil light, shut it down and get that figured out before you damage the engine.

Finding a good mechanic is often the big problem, I do most of my own work when I can. Ask around and see if you can find an independent local garage to look at it. I avoid the big box outfits as they often overcharge and over repair. Good luck!!
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@GerOttman Ty friend. I have AAA coming but now my hood won't pop ugh. It occasionally gets stuck. It probably just needs a jump start but I hope they can get it popped. If they can't I'll feel bad they came for nothing
Lilnonames · F
@Coralmist auto zone does the codes for free
carpediem · 61-69, M
To fix this quickly, use this tool 📞
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
If you can't get the hood open tomorrow, see if you can make a small break in the grill to use a finger or screwdriver to push the inside latch.

Had that problem before, because the inside driver side cable broke.

Note this does cause some small damage. And should be used only as a last chance.

It's possible anyone else could pop open your hood afterwards and steal your battery.
Iwillwait · M
Stay calm, just work through the problems one by one, you're going to be alright.
Iwillwait · M
@Coralmist it may just need to be lubricated.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@Iwillwait I hope so..the tech said he could feel the cable was not broken in the latch. But said if it pops up overnight to call them again and hopefully it's the battery
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@Iwillwait Ty for your kindness. Luckily I was at home when it wouldn't start .if I was further out my heart would've been racing ughh.
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
Probably a battery issue, but could be something more serious. You should have it checked out by a mechanic you trust.

The hood is likely just stuck. Shouldn't be an issue to fix.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@DunningKruger I hope they can get it, it won't pop whatsoever..ugh. It'll often pop up hours later on its own
kodiac · 22-25, M
If you can get it started go to any parts store they will check the battery and scan for codes to fix check engine light. Like others said check oil before starting . Possibly get a jump start to get to parts store
Sapio · 51-55, M
It could be your alternator. And you may be low on oil. As for your hood, the cable may be stretched or frayed or disconnected from the latch. AAA will be able to open it for you. I probably could if I was there.

@GerOttman brilliant
DownTheStreet · 56-60, M
Depending on the car, low oil pressure may fail the start sequence, since low oil pressure can quickly lead to serious damage.
GuyWithOpinions · 31-35, M
Is it leaking? Did you maybe leave the lights on or something?
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@GuyWithOpinions no leak ..I don't believe
GuyWithOpinions · 31-35, M
@Coralmist if its not leaking oil or anything then maybe the battery is just dead and the fact the engine is not running triggered the engine light? Im not a mechanic, but id say try to boost the battery first.
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
First step in the diagnosis is to change the battery. Yes the hood can still be opened by someone with the knowledge of how to do it. Just curious as to how long you ran it with the oil light on?
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@Coralmist Clicking sound almost always means a dead battery. Time for a new one. They aren't terribly expensive.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@hippyjoe1955 Ty hippy. Do you think once I can get a new battery, that it runs, the engine light is not related to battery issue? I just read online a faulty battery can even make a engine light go on.
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@Coralmist I honestly don't know. I know that when my check engine light came on the mechanic told me that it was an oxygen sensor acting up and he could replace it for $1300,00 or I could drive with a yellow light on my dash.
Anniedlr · 26-30, F
It might be that the Engine Management System needs looking at. Speak to your garage 🙂
ArtieKat · M
If I call AAA, could they somehow pop it open
I'm sure they'll be able to help you!
GerOttman · 61-69, M
Just a thought, you could try poking around on google, youtube, or social media. Plug in your year, make, model see if the hood thing might be a common problem with it. Maybe somebody already knows what's going on with that.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@GerOttman I read comments under a video on popping a stuck hood, and a guy used a shoehorn, to pry it, while someone else holds up the latch inside the car. It worked!!
1490wayb · 56-60, M
never ignore engine warning light!! i recently replaced battery, starter, solenoid, fuel pump, and was towed twice...still much than cheaper than buying 5 year old used car
Does it make a clicking noise when you turn the ignition
@Coralmist battery dead..
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout my hood won't pop now too... Ugh. Do you think AAA , a service roadside assistance company, can somehow get it?
Give the hood where the latch is a thump.
Just see if it’s stuck or jammed
GovanDUNNY · M
You have had the same problems before Michelle
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
So, simplest solution first. Check the oil. It's probably low, so you just add a quart or two. As for the battery, if the car starts okay, try driving it around after you put oil in it. That's advisable anyway, just to get the oil circulating through the car. If it still reads low battery, then it could be the alternator. That I don't know how to fix, and you'd want to go to a qualified mechanic.

Oh, and I forgot to add, if it still doesn't start after adding oil, you might try getting a jump start. Can't help you on how to get one.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
Impossible to diagnose from here, but my guess is yes, dead battery.

Whomever told you to ignore the check engine light totally is a fool. Read the code. It could be nothing, but at least find out what it is first.

It all starts with getting the hood open. Once you do check your engine oil. If it's not on the dip stick add oil until it is on the low mark. Once you get the car started take it to a shop you trust and have them look at it. They will find out what is wrong and get you going again. Driving a car with the engine light on for any length of time is not good and can result in extra expenses for you and or damage your engine. At the minimum it sounds like you need a oil change and a battery. That's why I said just make sure your oil level is at least up to the minimum mark. No need to add to much oil just so you can drain it back out when changing it. If your hood strut's won't hold the hood up any longer then have them replaced too.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@Musicman Ty Music. I just an oil change in late September so I don't believe it's an oil issue. It can go up to six months and only then do I need to add oil. It's really good in that regard. But I'll still check it .it should pop open overnight. Oh what a nuisance!!
Musicman · 61-69, MVIP
@Coralmist I use to have what I call a weekend car. I rarely drove it and when I did it was only in good weather. I didn't put enough miles on it for a yearly oil change so every year I just changed it regardless. So you should easily be able to go a year if you don't drive much. I do oil changes every 5,000 miles.

Look see if the serpentine belt fell off
BigGuy2 · 31-35, M
YouTube the problem ... you WILL find a vid to fix the issue there
Lilnonames · F
Have someone push down on hood as you pull the hood latch
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@Lilnonames I did while the technician was here but unfortunately we couldn't get it. Hopefully I'm it will unlatch overnight like it usually does, and will pop open by itself. They said just call them back in the morning.
