Recently we got rear ended in a car accident. Our car was totalled.
If you were me, what car would you buy that is great on gas, safe, lasts long and will require low maintence?
SW-User Best Comment
@SW-User Sounds like a good car from what I've read and from others on here. Thanks
SW-User
@BlondilyOld okay. I would also buy a newer used car instead of brand new but that's up to you. I hope you get one you are very happy with.
@SW-User We want a brand new one but will look at used ones too.

JustEd · 41-45, M
Get yourself a delorean. That would be sweet.
@JustEd Omg for sure. Would love to have one.
JustEd · 41-45, M
@BlondilyOld 😂. It would be epic.
Indy74 · 46-50, F
We have a 2017 Buick Encore. Its great on gas and low maintenance. Its a small Suv. We absolutely love it.
Iwillwait · M
@Indy74 no, no, don't feel bad, that helps me understand. Thank you. 🤗
Indy74 · 46-50, F
@Iwillwait I know it’s a 4 cylinder
Indy74 · 46-50, F
@Iwillwait you’re so welcome!! 🤗
GLITTER · 36-40, F
I’d go for some kinda hybrid, the way the world is going you won’t be able to buy petrol / diesel cars soon
@GLITTER Thank you so much. Really appreciate that. We've been thru hell this past month.
GLITTER · 36-40, F
@BlondilyOld urgh everything always comes at once. Don’t let it try your patience, you’ve got this 💪🏼
@GLITTER Thats true we're slowly getting thru this accident mess and hoping for a good settlement but we have to wait until we're healed.
Mktonght · 61-69, M
My 2015 Mazda CX5 is amazing. 4 cylinder with 27-30 MPG. lots of pep when needed.
Over 126,000 and only thing was new tires at about 75,000, and brakes at 95,000.
Besides that, regular oil changes and standard maintenance
@Mktonght wow it does have a lot of pep!
Lackwittyname · 51-55, M
They have hybrids in all models these days, SUV and trucks even have electric. I would say the choice is full electric, hybrid or normal gas. Once you figure that then figure out what make and model fits the budget.
@Lackwittyname We're thinking of getting a hybrid to save on gas because my hub drives an hour round trip to work. Thanks for your suggestions.
Degbeme · 70-79, M
Vespa. 😬
Degbeme · 70-79, M
@BlondilyOld You have someplace to charge it? If so then go for it.
@Degbeme no but they have charging places everywhere here and right down the street where we shop.
Degbeme · 70-79, M
@BlondilyOld Sounds like you have all the boxes checked. ;)
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
These gas prices can't last for ever. Me I would get a car that gets good gas or a SUV if u need the space
@smileylovesgaming Good reasoning. Thank you
Whyme · 46-50, M
Ild stay away from truck as they simply arent efficient unless ya pull a camper or have a reason for one
@Whyme I agree. We want a car thats good on gas.
LunarOrbit · 56-60, M
Toyota in my books

Kias and Hyundai are popular in Canada for their price and long warranties
@LunarOrbit It feels great but expensive. lol
LunarOrbit · 56-60, M
@BlondilyOld yeah. And that first scratch is the deepest! 😟
@LunarOrbit True and its funny how a little dust means its time to take it to the car wash! 😆
Hybrids would probably be my choice of what you mentioned but personally I love coupes
@GBPackersFan Coups are nice but were looking into hybrids
Iwillwait · M
Hybrid all they way if money is a concern.
@Iwillwait Yes we want to save on gas especially now with the high gas prices
Iwillwait · M
@BlondilyOld good luck. I was thinking a RAV4 Hybrid or Camry
@Iwillwait me too
CestManan · 46-50, F
Something Japanese. Avoid American cars because they are heaps of crap.
@CestManan We all have to figure out what works best for us.
SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
A hybrid would be best on gas out of the three.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
You have not mentioned your size or carry needs. But if a small SUV is suitable I would take a serious look at a Mitsubishi ASX. A design and build to match Toyota, frugal on fuel and a little better on purchase price than toyota.
Of course, if you have 6 kids or own more than 2 sheep dogs, you might need something larger.😷
@whowasthatmaskedman hahaha
We tried getting a toyota camry but they wouldn't be getting any until Sept., so we are getting a Honda accord hybrid.
Havesomefun2 · 56-60, M
Batteries run down
Iwillwait · M
We have a Toyota Prius hybrid

We really like it. there’s lots of various types of hybrids these days tho.. but if you don't care how much you spend on gas then id get a bmw x5 or something as they run like a dream 😅 (power wise)
@SStarfish Sounds good. We're looking for hybrids.
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
I have a Honda Civic coupe regular engine that gets 55 mpg on the highway, high safety rating, fun to drive, holds resale value, long term reliability. It’s my 3rd Honda purchase. Toyotas are also fantastic .
@BackyardShaman Both sound great! Thank you
4meAndyou · F
The 2022 Honda Accord Hybrid gets 41-48 mpg city and 41-48 Hwy. Honda is a great brand name. My 2004 Honda was purchased used, but has been with me for 11 years and has never had a major problem.
@4meAndyou Nice! Well be looking at cars this weekend. Thanks for the info.
GerOttman · 61-69, M
Depending on how much you get from the lawsuit I'd be looking at Lambo's... Red is popular but I like yellow better!
@GerOttman Id love to get one of those! But am sure we won't get that much.
redredred · M
You can’t go wrong with Toyota’s or Honda’s Most are not terribly exciting but they run forever.
@redredred Sounds good to me!
Camary if you are looking for a sedan. If affordable id even upgrade to a Lexus , over a BMW.
@checkoutanytime Thank you we ended up getting a Honda accord hybrid.
@BlondilyOld Honda is a good buy, 👍
SW-User
You can rule out a truck due to gas savings

I’d say a hybrid is a good bet
@SW-User I agree. I think thats what we're going to get.
vetguy1991 · 51-55, M
vetguy1991 · 51-55, M
@BlondilyOld that truck gets about 24 mpg
Wol62 · 51-55, M
@BlondilyOld Oh right, bang goes my idea!
@vetguy1991 Yep we need better gas mileage than that with the hubs long commute to work.
Northwest · M
What kind of budget do you have?
@Northwest We can pay cash for a brand new hybrid which is what we're leaning towards.
Northwest · M
@BlondilyOld Go for the hybrid.
@Northwest Thats our plan!
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
Subaru Outback.
@DunningKruger Why do you recommend that?
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
@BlondilyOld We bought an Outback in 2008, and still drive it. It has been the best car I've ever owned.

During one of the various snowpocalypses we've had here over the years, I went to pick up the wife at work, and a lot of cars between me and her had slid off the road. We drove very slowly on the slippery roads to get home, but never had an issue at all until we pulled into our driveway. By that time, the snow was deep enough that we got stuck there. That is a pretty typical example of its performance over the years.

Subarus are generally well regarded for their safety records and their longevity. Maintenance has never been a significant issue. It's getting older now, but it only costs maybe $1,000 a year to get some aging parts replaced.
@DunningKruger That is impressive. Ill have to add that to my list. Thank you
Lostpoet · M
With the gas prices you should probably go hybrid.
@Lostpoet Thank you thats what we do want.
Wol62 · 51-55, M
SUV, well that is what I would choose.
@Wol62 We're thinking about it. Thanks for your suggestion.
MarineBob · 56-60, M
Id go with toyota
@MarineBob It seems to be the popular brand. Thank you
lumberjackslam · 41-45, M
not this
but I can recommend a Honda Civic after I drove a later model year
@lumberjackslam A Honda or Toyota seems to be the best deal.
tenente · 100+, M
toyota corolla meets those needs, and retains its value over time compared to others (full disclosure i don't own a corolla i have an f150 pick up and a triumph motorcycle)
@tenente Ive heard about them and that toyota camrys are good cars too. Thanks for the suggestion.
CestManan · 46-50, F
@tenente One of my cars is an older corolla and the damn thing is like a cockroach - it just doesn't die.

The downside is they are sllloooowwwww.
Virgo79 · 61-69, M
@tenente id vote for this!
SW-User
I have a Peugeot 208, not sure do you have Peugeot in USA?
@SW-User I just looked and they're not sold here anymore. They look nice tho.
SW-User
@BlondilyOld oh yes, it's awesome

Avoid any truck. They are gas hogs at best.

SUV's get about 30 miles per gallon but there's way too many blind spots on almost every SUV that's built.

A hybrid car means you still have the same maintenance expense as a gasoline powered car but your car will only operate on pure battery power at speeds below 30mph. Above 30, the gas engine starts.

By 2025, most European car manufacturers have already announced that gas and diesel powered cars will no longer be manufactured, which means that if you own a gas powered car 3 years from now, you might have a hard time unloading it when it comes time to trade it.

If I were you, I'd go for a purely electric Chev product right now because Chev is offering to install a charging system in your garage free of charge as a special promotional offer.

Purely electric cars require zero routine maintenance to the engine and transmission because there are no oil changes, no filters and no transmission to maintain. Electric motors require zero maintenance. The main battery that powers the car is estimated to last for 8 years before requiring replacement. Make sure you trade the car before that or it will cost you $15k![/c]
@swirlie We already got a car but thanks for the advice!

@SW-User Also not as expensive to service as some. I also like Mazdas but they're a bit dearer than Hondas to service in my experience ☺️
Gangstress · 41-45, F
@Fluffybull yeh we have a mazda. Love it lol but its expensive for services youre right
Yulianna · 22-25, F
@KiwiBird 🤗 love it!
