Been to Barrow Alaska , the northernmost point in the North American continent . It was 38F/3C in August ! Been to the Arctic twice, including this past summer. Also been to Reykjavik, but that’s south of Arctic .
@samueltyler2 never heard of it. I was in barrow in 2017 after seeing the vampire film “30 days of night “ (and Fairbanks this past summer ). Iceland was April of 2016 and I did the golden circle .
@AthrillatheHunt It is the northern most city in Iceland. I lived in Keflavik for 2 years, serving in the US Navy from 1970-72. The golden circle is a magnificent trip. The hot springs and the falls, amazing.
@samueltyler2 yess did geyser and gulfoss. The topography reminded me of mars (Iceland is an infant in terms of it being a geographical land mass ). Thanks for serving ya salty sea dog!
Back in the early 70s I was posted to a Army base north of Toronto Ontario. I happened to be chatting with a young fellow officer cadet who enthused "I have never been this far north before"! I had to smile and laughed as I said that I had never been this far south before.
I was on a reindeer ranch in a Finland. I’d never seen more than two in the same space. So to see 800+ was an eye opener.
They’re quite grumpy animals outside of a Christmas story. Even when you’re feeding them they try jab you with their antlers.
Fun fact: male reindeer shed their antlers during the winter months. So all of Santa’s crew must be females.
Two tourists looked bloody foolish for complaining about using animal products in the gift shop. You can buy just about anything made of antler. And the antlers are found just by picking them up off the forest floor.
The same couldn’t be said about the Nordic stew, but reindeer meat is incredibly tasty and tender.
@AdmiralPrune I've been telling people for years that deer, including reindeer, don't just have those antlers for decoration. You try to pet them in the wild, you get what you get.
As far as reindeer stew, I want to try that someday.
On a whale watching boat somewhere in the Salish Sea between Washington and British Columbia
The boat crossed into Canadian waters briefly near Saturna Island (a Canadian patrol plane even seemed to be checking us out), and also passed north of Patos Island in US waters
looking east toward Mount Baker, past the Patos Island lighthouse
I've been to Thule Greenland in July which lies at about 77 degrees North Latitude, which is about 60 nautical miles further north than the Magnet North Pole which lies about 76 degrees North Latitude.
@ElwoodBlues That map looks very familiar. I do remember some talk about being very close to the Arctic circle. We probably even spent the night there.
@TurtlePink Buffalo is like that gorgeous Hollywood actress from the 1980’s who’s now old and chopped . But if you squint you can tell she was a looker many years ago. Buffalo is depressing af
Southern Canada. We were in up state New York visiting family. My grandparents lived close enough to Canada that my grandmother took my mom and I to Canada for shopping and lunch.
@lissah What part of Canada? Canada stretches from the same latitude as Northern California to the North Pole. The farthest north settlement in the word is Alert Nunavut 82 degrees north
