The first thing I would do is pad my 401 to make sure my retirement funds were good. Then set up retirement accounts for my children and grandchildren. Pay off debt for my family and extended family. Whatever was remaining at that point, I would give away as fast as I could. Small stuff, maybe a new truck, motorcycle. No McMansions, no Maserati, I have a home and most of the things I want and need.
@Roadsterrider there are always emergencies. I wouldn't give away everything. But your plan does sound nice.

Get my own land and build a house for me and my kids. If not that I'd save most of it for my kids future and I'd take us on a family holiday and instead of doing my mums two gardens by myself I'd hire people to help me because it's beyond saving

@Diotrephes Nope. They'd get a portion for preventing others from getting it.

You are a fully grown adult who has been managing his money for decades. You may have done lousy job so you should know all of the things you shouldn't do. Your spouse gets half. But if you have kids you can divide it up so that each person gets an equal share. That way there is no arguing about money in the family and each family member can spend his/her share
as desired.

The most important thing is to have a budget so if you want the money to last 240 months or 400 months you create the budget for that length of time. Good bank CDs may not make you rich but they are safe and will provide a steady safe income.

Remember, if you buy an expensive house your survivors may not want it or be able to afford it, even if it's paid for. If you want to give money away then set up college funds for the kids in the family. Don't give the money to strangers. If yo have a lot of cash you can give each person $18,000 a year tax free. The total amount counts against your estate. So, for instance, you could give 100 people $18,000 a year and only be out $1,800,000 for the year. Do you know 100 people?

The average person is clueless about money and has no idea how to manage a large sum.

Suppose you won $100,000,000 after taxes. You family consists of you, your spouse, and two kids. A four-way split equals $25,000,000 each. You are in 60 years old so you can expect to live another 20 years. https://www.ssa.gov/oact/STATS/table4c6.html

If you put $20,000,000 in CDs spread across numerous banks and got a .035% return after taxes would you get an additional $700,000 the first year net.

After10 such cycles you would have about $28,211,650 in the bank. Check the math! Of course if you invested in the stock market you might end up with more or you could lose a lot of principal. The CDs are safe and no risk.

In the meantime you had $5,000,000 to spend over 10 years, That's $500,000 year tax free on a flat budget. Now, based on your current standard of living, wouldn't you be living like a king on $500,000 a year? That is $41,666 a month. You could easily afford a nice house and car and have money left over for fun items. and, at the end of 10 years you will have $28,211,650 compared to the original $25,000,000. Your wife and kids would have their own money so there would never be any arguments over money.

BTW, you can give someone $18,000 a year as a gift tax free each year. If you want to give them more then you should put them on your payroll and pay state, federal, social security, and Medicare taxes. A payroll company can take care of sending out the checks and taking care of all of the required paperwork.

Of course if you so desire with an expected life of another 20 years you could spend $1,000,000 a year ($83,333 per month) with a $5 million reserve fund. How would you spend $83,333 a month for the next 240 months?

Give to my family, hideaway from the world, and then hopefully live modestly.
Put a good amount into savings
Pay off what debts i have now
Invest to make more money 💰 🤑
Move to a one or two bedroom place, maybe buy a better mobility scooter and/or wheelchair, buy a dishwasher.
Selah ·
Ugh. I need to move and focus on my health. But first I would quit my job.
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
I would definitely pay off my house and any other bills I had.
After that it would depend on how much money.
If there was a large sum left I don't think I'd want to have it all in one go... I would set up some kind of payments that I get each month.
If enough ,I would travel a bit, I would help my adult children out, and live sensibly.

Pay off the bill's. Put a new roof on the house. Get new windows and hurricane shutters. Put a new set of tires on the motorhome. Build a garage for the motorhome. Go on vacation. Maybe take a month or two trip in the motorhome to relax and contemplate life. Help a few friends.
