I would love to go back to the fifties

I am drawn to almost everything from that time period. Music and films, home styles and furniture and fashion that still looks amazing and iconic 70 years later. Peplum tops with pencil skirts and dresses with crinoline skirts, make any girl feel pretty and feminine. Retro hair styles and cat eye sunglasses. Even the underwear was sexy for pin-up burlesque look. I'd happily live in the fifties and thrive I think. It's a time when men were men and women were women.
Lucyy · 22-25, F
I'm both not white, and a not a man, so I'll pass on the double oppression lmao. Returning to times of 'get to the back of the bus' is a hard no. I find it kind of startling how many white people seem okay with that tbh. This was literally the time of Rosa Parks being arrested for refusing to give her seat to a white man, and even BEFORE the time that it was considered acceptable for white adults to stand and scream death threats to a little black six year old for attending a better school- because that little girl simply wouldn;t have been ABLE to attend to begin with.
And even if I'm okay with being a housewife, being forced to do so because a man essentially owns me? Hard pass lol.
I think 'let's bring back some of the fashion of the fifties' is a much more appropriate statement that I could get on board with. I'm not particularly okay with being segregated because I am considered the bottom of the barrel- even in more progressive places. 1958 was the year my grandfather was denied housing because he was black- it was literally WRITTEN into the contracts back then, even in places like Washington state.

@samueltyler2 ouch! How could you mix those up???
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Patientlywaiting you would be surprised what people do. Crazy gour for eye drops is common.
Patientlywaiting · 46-50, F
@samueltyler2 is that why they call it crazy glue lol?
SW-User
There was not as much crime. Kids played outside and walked to school all by themselves. The cars were cool.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@SW-User the cars were dangerous. Had an AM radio at best, standard shit, no power steering or brakes.
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
@samueltyler2 NO seatbelts, breakaway steering columns or folding hoods.
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
I was born in '61 so got the handmedowns drom my brother. We lived in northern minnesota so life was a bit primitive. There was little plastiv in the fifties. Glass jars for ketchup and mayo. Wood floors, single pane windows heavy with frost on the inside in the winter. Heat was from wood furnaces. Electric power was still fairly new so fuse boxes were rated for a whopping 40 amps. Up there we got one tv channel and the bookmobile came by once a week. The roads were still dirt and became so muddy in the spring that we had mud days. Every night dad would spray the inside of the house with shelltox. It smelled ok but was banned in the seventies. Cigarettes were mostly roll your own. The cenus velvet cans were saved for farm repairs and the papers were great for putting notes on for confirmation recitation. Radios and tvs still mostly used tubes. The movies and shows were mostly about our victory over the nazis, spys, the wonders of nuclear power flying saucers, westerns, lucy, bob hope, the three stooges, abbot and Costello, and sha na na. A V8 engine was standard but there were some slant sixes.
wonkywinky · 51-55, M
I would love to go back to anytime before about 2000,i think the 90s were the last time when human life was anything like normal, before all the movements, like "me too,BLM",LGBTQ etc.
When there were no,or very few mobile phones,internet-when people HAD to go to the shops to buy things...
Patientlywaiting · 46-50, F
@wonkywinky yep modern life is killing us.
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
Fashion esthetic? We're much better off with civil rights. Should a woman need a husband's permission to open a bank or credit account? No. Even most birth control was illegal. Like tattoos? Then they were for criminals, sailors and seedy people.

Stick with the esthetic. The cars, furniture and architecture were fine. Some of the food items were weird.
RuyLopez · 56-60, M
And garters.
RuyLopez · 56-60, M
@Patientlywaiting The ones with the loose bows on the sides….. 😏
@RuyLopez PROPER garters and suspenders.
Not these new skinny uselss pointless versions that dont hold up squat, and nearly get lost on any thigh that isn't a chicken leg.

The proper broad suspenders that look good on all thighs...they are so nice to wear .

Popular modern ones are crap, like modern corsets. All show no do😂
RuyLopez · 56-60, M
@OogieBoogie Yessss!

Agent · 61-69, M
Polymers were still on the drawing board with very little practical application. Rubber was the main ingredient for such things, and rubber was hard to get.
@Agent Plus:

No Velcro,
No IC chips,
No Solid State devices,
No personal computers,
No personal phones,
No TV remote controls,
No plethora of TV channels,
No wireless devices,
No Microwave ovens,
No miniature TV cameras,
No massive border invasions,
No internet,
No Social Security tax !!!
GerOttman · 61-69, M
'57 T-Bird fresh off the showroom floor, Wolfman Jack on the AM radio. Take a late night drive up the hills to look at the stars...
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@GerOttman we called it watching submarine races, lol.
Pretzel · 61-69, M
I love the movies and tv shows - I was born in 55 so didn't do the whole "Grease" movie thing but it was simpler.
I miss Mayberry
A terrific decade for films and music, perhaps my second favorite behind the 70s
LadyJ · F
I agree...i would re live my life there given the chance
MountainMonk89 · 51-55, M
I tend to romanticize the innocence of the 30s more; pre-WW II.
Abbott and Costello, old time radio theater, fedoras and dresses. A time before we really knew what was brewing across the pond. But the 50s have a lot of that too; a "Golden Age" of Hollywood before the cynicism of the 60s set in.
TexChik · F
@MountainMonk89 The 50's I think would have been amazing. Everyone was so happy to be done with WWII. No more rationing and worrying. The kids had been pent up and life was fun again for most of America.
MountainMonk89 · 51-55, M
@TexChik My parents were totally the "Back to the Future" people of 1955. "Enchantment Under the Sea" dance. Except I'm pretty sure my father laid Biff out at the start of the movie. 😉
Torsten · 36-40, M
a good time to experience i am sure.
I personally would love to go back to the 800"s. that time period fascinates me beyond belief.
If i had to choose a time period i lived during i would say back to the 2000"s
Torsten · 36-40, M
@Patientlywaiting how simple things were as in No technology and all that.
paganism being much more common is another thing.
Roles in familes were much more defined also and i believe that would have made all parties happier to what they are like today.
Granted there was a lot of bad things that happened also but Living that lifestyle that people did especially in Scandanavia, sounds better to me than what its like today.

Why the 80s/90's? those were good times also but curious what you liked about it
Patientlywaiting · 46-50, F
@Torsten I was a child and teen and it was a time of fun and no responsibility mostly.
Torsten · 36-40, M
@Patientlywaiting cant argue that :)
SW-User
The fifties were boring and harsh. I lived in a slum, seriously.
No internet no TV people talked to each other face to face. Kids went out to play games. Not on computers and mobiles but fun things. I am a 60s child and remember the good days
Patientlywaiting · 46-50, F
@nevergiveup Even for me, born in the seventies I've seen the difference, kids now don't what to do without a mobile phone.
@Patientlywaiting its like cutting off there hand if you take a phone off them. Good punishment.
Patientlywaiting · 46-50, F
@nevergiveup It's my go to for my teens, I would never need to smack them, taking their phones, refusing to drive them, stopping pocket money or getting them to do extra jobs is effective! 😅
Midlifemale · 61-69, M
I agree. I do some interior woodworking and cabinertry and have the request for mid-century modern is increasing....reminds me of the 50's
Patientlywaiting · 46-50, F
@Midlifemale I love the rounded edges and simple design of fifties furniture and it's practical, raised off the floor so easy to clean under. 😊
Midlifemale · 61-69, M
@Patientlywaiting yeah, I installed some counters that I mounted on the wall...I know exactly what you mean.
I'll see if I have any pictures
jademonkey19 · 41-45, T
That's not entiiiiirely true. Men were definitely women, and women were definitely men - it just wasn't as well publicized.

People have always been pretty delightfully kinky.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@MountainMonk89 I lived through the 40s and 50s, yes there were some good things, but many really bad things that people seem too have forgotten, are ignorant of or ignore
See the most excellent movie, “Elvis” that came out last summer!

Most highly recommend!

Saw it 4x at the theatre!
There's a crossdresser here who feels the same way about the women's clothing of that era.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
It sounds great looking back. At the time it didn't seem so wonderful. My uncle had clear plastic covering the furniture, we had only black and white television that was almost always blurry.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Patientlywaiting the UK had only national television until somewhat recently. But, the quality of images was better than we had.
Patientlywaiting · 46-50, F
@samueltyler2 yes the colour always seemed weird on American shows as I remember.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Patientlywaiting it had to do with scanning rates. Most of Europe had many more lines on the screen than the US standard. When we lived in Iceland, when i served in the Navy, we had to have an adapter inside our TV so we could watch both icelandic and US Navy broadcasts.
Northerner · 70-79, M
My neighbours who are a similar age to me live as a fifties couple . Their dress and lifestyle are exactly how it was back then. The wife knows her place and has everything ready for hubby when he arrives home. There house is like stepping back in time.
Patientlywaiting · 46-50, F
@Northerner there are echoes of that in our marriage too. We pick the best of both and find a balance that works. 🙂
Northerner · 70-79, M
@Patientlywaiting Same here.
fvckit · 41-45, M
That’s the era I want to live in! Just the thought of being able to make a good simple life without the exhausting rat race and all the distractions life has to offer

Ever seen Midnight in Paris?
Patientlywaiting · 46-50, F
@fvckit no, but I might have a look if I can find it 😊
fvckit · 41-45, M
@Patientlywaiting you’ll love it. It takes place in Paris, obviously, so it’s a little more eccentric than the US, but it’s about exactly this. I love the movie.
1olderguy20 · 61-69, M
Disciplined wives
AirForce687 · 36-40, M
@1olderguy20 The days when discplining kids DIDN’T get you hauled into court
Redstar · 36-40, M
But it's also a time when men were extremely sexist towards women. I can't imagine that being a very enjoyable time for any female.
Northerner · 70-79, M
@Redstar A lot of women actually liked knowing their place in the home.
Redstar · 36-40, M
@Northerner You mean they had no choice and just had to shut up and do what the man says, regardless of what they want. Unlike now. If someone does actually want to do it, that's fine, but there wasn't a choice before and you're acting like that was okay.

@Patientlywaiting Certainly most men back then.

Some people will overreact to things more than they used to but I haven't seen, heard or experienced anyone getting offended because someone finds them attractive.
Patientlywaiting · 46-50, F
@Redstar language. Ive known women to get really upset because a man has called them darling or sweetheart or complimented them on how they look..
DIMaverick4 · 41-45, M
Men were men and women were women .. ahem ... Explain pls ;) .. it's ok if you explain in DM :)
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Patientlywaiting submissiveness then was very different that today.
Patientlywaiting · 46-50, F
@samueltyler2 in what way different?
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Patientlywaiting the wife stayed home, wore dresses, were homemakers, couples slept in separate beds, today submissive takes on a more sexual connotation.
women stayed at home and men went to work. Men was the head of the house and women behaved
JohnOinger · 41-45, M
Im gonna invent A,Real Life Time Machine someday
Patientlywaiting · 46-50, F
@JohnOinger I will be waiting 😂
I love this era of fashion and style too.

And as much as it seems so romantic ....i wouldnt go back to this time.
I love my freedom, i love todays diversity . I love that i can talk, eat, play and go out with anyone i like, (black, white, asian, jewish Zoroastrian ....whatever) ....with my own money, on my own time .

40/50's eras fashion is so iconic....and reeks of elegance. Had the chance to parade some original pieces from a collection once....and its amazing to wear.

And men looked so smart in their jackets and hats.

But not that time . It wasnt a place for anyone who wasnt a white man ....or rich.
Freeranger · M
We should talk some time. That's my gig.

MonaMartinez86 · 36-40, F
You would have to be a housewife and live on your husband’s money
Patientlywaiting · 46-50, F
@MonaMartinez86 Im totally cool with that. :)
MonaMartinez86 · 36-40, F
@Patientlywaiting only few had washing machines you would have to wash clothes by hand if you didn’t have one or wash dishes by hand
Patientlywaiting · 46-50, F
@MonaMartinez86 hopefully I'd be lucky enough to have an automatic washing machine. I wouldn't like the mangle and wash board replacement so I'd have to be an extraordinarily good fifties wife till I was allowed one. 🙂
