The website "charity navigator" has a good rep for letting you know such details.
sylvsn59 · 61-69, M
@ineedadrink Guide star is pretty good too

I absolutely do not, I already know very well about these scams. If you pay close attention you can even see it in the commercials by the way they film it. The poor shaking freezing to death dogs with the bad eye. The cat with eye snot all over his face. Or the huge overweight logging chain connected to the medium sized dog collar. Wow! Talking about the chain wagging the dog ! Obviously a worst case scenario. And then you will notice that the motion picture has been slowed down to a considerably lower speed to enhance making it look more depressing than it already might be. Or the wounded veteran which always seems to be a handful of three or four of the same poor guys in all of the commercials... How many of these veterans are they actually serving? And then they even will do a hour long paid program. And if you can actually stand to sit through and watch the whole thing you will notice that they just lay the butter on thicker and thicker until the end of the hour-long program. And here's the real kicker. For only $19 a month ! How ironic. At least a dozen TV ad charity organizations all wanting $19 a month. Why not just round it up to $20 a month? Or $19.95? Uh huh, yeah, whatever. What amazes me is just how dumb and gullible most people are. Maybe I have a special gift because I can sense lies and read right between the lines very easily.
And to think that this is so bad.... It's child's Play compared to the medical industries scamming commercials. How much does it cost to run a commercial? A large Fortune. You have to outbid a huge number of other people who want that time slot on TV. Obviously the charity scammers and the medical scammers have the most money. Think of all the commercials we used to see that are no longer there because they can't afford it because they keep getting outbid by the ones who got the most money. People!!! Wake the heck up ! Pull your heads out of the sand ! Stop being so gullible. Our voices are our most powerful weapons against tyranny. Teach the stupid people. And are a lot of them. Sorry for the long article but these subjects are exactly what's going to destroy your children and grandchildren's futures. Some of you don't even care about that. I've heard some complete idiots say this ... "I don't care what happens after I'm dead". What morons! Do you say that to your own kids and grandkids?
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@IndianaJoes yeah I am old enough to remember when there were commercials on tv for toothbrushes & toothpaste, laundry supplies, bath, shampoo & hygiene items, Alka Seltzer, Norelco razors, Coca-Cola, Lipton tea, etc. You don’t see that many restaurant commercials, used to see a lot of Sonic & Braum’s commercials here every day. Between the seasonal political commercials and these scam charities, Camp LeJeune and other class-action settlement ads, and Big Pharm the smaller less profitable items don’t get advertised.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@IndianaJoes And the way that the women narrators emphasize the word “Suffering” is the same regardless of if it is for neglected & abused dogs or the elderly Holocaust survivors in Ukraine and other countries. The Jews are known to make so much money in their business ventures, why aren’t they taking care of their own instead of focusing on Christians to do it for them?
Charity = scam..

After they pilfer it and pay for office space. Cars. Stationary..

Very very little go to charity..

Go give cash direct to a homeless person..
you won’t be making a billionaire richer
@cherokeepatti that’s the entire reason for its existence..

Job for the boys..

These jobs are payments for being a team player
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout
Just a few months ago. At the height of cash flow to Ukraine..
the Clinton’s reopened their foundation in Ukraine..
Thought they muscle in on the action..
then public interest waned and the money dried up 🤓

Farkin frauds they are
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout they make me angry. They need to go to prison forever.
joe438 · 61-69, M
I purchase food and donate it to local animal shelters. The scammers who pay for those ads use very little of the money to actually help animals. Most of the big charities have a poor record of using the money for the correct purpose.
joe438 · 61-69, M
@cherokeepatti awesome- yes they do need blankets, toys and money too. The ones I talk to ask for food so that’s what I give them.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@joe438 I took a couple female feral cats to the animal shelter to be spayed and adopted. I noticed a lot of bags of pet food in different brands that people had donated.
joe438 · 61-69, M
@cherokeepatti It helps to ask them what they need rather than just buying stuff and dropping it off.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
Nope.
Did a bit of work with Help the aged - British charity raising money for services to the elderly some years ago.

Quite disgusting how they had teams of random phone callers ringing endless lists of phone numbers and then trying to solicit single one-off donations via their credit cards.

Thay also had 'Inspectors' visiting their charity shops and evaluating the prices on donations being sold in the shops.
'Managers' were being told to increase their pricing or lose their jobs if other stores nearby surpassed their 'fundraising targets'

Ruthless.
And all the big salaries for 'Full-time senior management'......disgusting
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Picklebobble2 There is a charity that alternates between being a charity for disabled Veterans or a charity for fallen police officers. This man with a deep voice calls once a month every month and has for several years. They won’t take my number off of their list either. I got tired of it and asked the man how much of these donations actually went to the Veterans. He stammered and paused and said “well we have to pay for overhead and salaries and the rest goes to the Veterans”. I asked for a number and he said 93% goes to overhead & salaries. I said “So only 7% actually goes to help the Veterans?… SHAME ON YOU !!!” And he apologized and hung up. But he calls every month and it’s a “charity” based in Texas. I live in Oklahoma where people are known to be exceptionally charitable especially the religious people here.
@Picklebobble2 and that's why I've turned my life to the point where I use no credit cards. It's a heck of an inconvenience but in the end I will be glad I did that. And I never answer a phone call if the name of the person calling is not shown. If the person is somebody I know but I don't recognize the phone number... I don't answer. And if they don't have enough brains to leave me a message on my voicemail so I know that it was them... They will never get a hold of me. It sucks but that's the world we live in. I never give my phone number out when they asked me at the cash register. I tell them that's not your business. Remember I'm always paying with cash. I never use those barcode rewards cards. They don't need to track me or my spendings. And it actually cost me more to pay the trash bill to get rid of all the junk mail then I save on those stupid rewards cards. Yep, I get almost no junk mail. Isn't that amazing? This is how we're going to have to fight these tyrants.
sylvsn59 · 61-69, M
i always investigate the charities i give to to make sure they are 5 star. you can also review their tax returns and see how much comes in and how the money is spent.
@sylvsn59 I do the same. It sucks that we have to do significant research into a charity to decide whether or not to donate to it. But this is the world we live in.
sylvsn59 · 61-69, M
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
I don't donate to any charity. If the goverment can send billions to other countries then that tells me everything I need to know.
CestManan · 46-50, F
@MrBrownstone You have an excellent point there.

Although I think the reason the govt sends aid to other nations is so their refugees don't all end up here in the states.

Kind of like if you had a choice between helping your neighbors pay rent or having them come stay in your house. Crappy choices but "the lesser of the evils."
4meAndyou · F
I used to donate to the ASPCA. However, NO real charity could air SO MANY hugely expensive television commercials and have too much money left over to go to the animals, themselves.
4meAndyou · F
@cherokeepatti I know that on some days, I KNOW there is a news story on a certain channel, and I just can't find it on Google. You might have to go to the news from India to find the story.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@4meAndyou who controls the media and who controls these search sites and others? They are working to censor what is posted or what we can see. Nice machine they got going there to try to keep us ignorant of current events etc.
4meAndyou · F
@cherokeepatti I think Congress might be trying to control that infringement a little bit.
Prison1203 · 61-69, M
One of the biggest ripoffs is the Salvation Army and goodwill my mom won’t even donate her clothes to them because of the high prices they charge and the money spent that goes to the upper management
PatKirby · M
@Prison1203

Don't forget the United Way. Stopped giving to that double scam of a flim-flam shim sham long ago.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@PatKirby Yeah the manager in my department at the university 50 years ago was pressuring us to donate to United Way. I was a new worker making the lowest wages in the department and told him that the money was not being used locally like they say it is but going to pay the big-wig salaries of the different charities that they were dividing the donations with instead. And told him my brother-in-law was active in the Boy Scouts and not a penny went to them locally. Then more than a decade later there was a scandal with United Way and the CEO got sent to federal prison for fraud and conspiracy.
PatKirby · M
@cherokeepatti

Nearly the exact thing happened to me back in 1987. The "manager in my department" where I worked "was pressuring us to donate to United Way. I was a new worker making the lowest wages in the department" and later found out it was not going to the needy. This made me real mad so I stopped giving to United Way. The next year it was on the news that the top dog's administrative assistant was making over $200,000 a year. That was a lot of money back then. Stopped giving to them.
CestManan · 46-50, F
I think it is common knowledge that charities are mostly scams.

I am curious if all of them are owned by the same parent company -
Children's hospitals, save the suffering animals, help feed some 90 year old holocaust survivor, help a vet...

And they ALL ask the same amount - only $19 a month and you get some damned tee shirt.

The lady with the quivering sad voice on those save the animals ads, I wonder how much she got paid to do that pathetic voice?

Things I notice -

Those animals usually look like they are in better shape than my own dog was and his azz was well fed and lived indoors, save for being let out to potty or nice weather days.

That holocaust survivor - If she were living like that for any amount of time, she would not have survived to tell.

These charities and the whole damn world lately gets carried away. I mean EVERYone thinks they are a hustler, can't turn on the TV or even drive your car without someone asking for money.

Sometimes I see these healthy guys in their early 20's sitting in a wheelchair acting like they are handicap, lying azz mother fuggers THEY ISN'T CR*PPLED!" Be trying to look all pitiful...

OH here is a funny one, oh Patti you are going to love this :D ....

When I was a little kid and used to see those "Save some kid in a third world nation" ads on TV, I remember they would talk about how your donation would help... "They will have clean water, a place to sleep, nutritious food, the chance to go to school..."
And I thought (pardon the caps but I have to), YOU MEAN THOSE LITTLE B@STARDS DON'T EVEN HAVE TO GO TO SCHOOL?!" 🤣

But no, I am not one to donate.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
I don't think there's any point in donating to never ending sinkholes.
We know Cancer is horrible no matter who has it.
Do we really need 5000 different charities for the same cause ?
Why ?

Personally i favour raising money for short-term goals.
Ok you won't cure 'Jimmy' of his problems but if all the poor kid wants is a trip to Disney world THAT'S an achievable figure and folk are more likely to donate to see an achievable aim quickly realised
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Picklebobble2 I did an experiment with surveys about grocery spending etc. that used to be inserted in Sunday newspaper inserts more than 25 years ago. One of those surveys asked about purchases but also asked if I was shy. I marked it yes. And I deliberately misspelled my name a different way every time on each survey I filled out. I wanted to see what kind of junk mail offers I would be getting in the mail. I got one medical research study offer about using a drug to correct shyness and my name was misspelled. Later found out they were using an anti-depressant testing it on the participants in the study that were shy. I think it was Paxil but not 100% sure since this was around 25-30 years ago. Anyway I read later that Tavistock Institute based in the UK was behind this thing of creating new “medical conditions” that were being used to promote more prescription drug use. I still get mail every once in a great while with my misspelled names on it. One was from a pharmacy that was selling cigars & accessories around the holidays. I had answered that survey and told them I was a Chinese professor who drank whiskey and smoked cigars. I deliberately made up stuff on those surveys, and they were sending these mailings 25 years later with that name. My address must have gotten forwarded as well because I moved two times after doing these survey.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@cherokeepatti ooh that's interesting !!
I know that when drug companies trial drugs its often the most common side effects that ultimately determine what that drug is ultimately used for.

A classic example of this is Pfizer's Viagra.
Originally trialled as a heart medication ends up being a treatment for something completely different !

Interesting.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Picklebobble2 I believe that they want society drugged up and their emotions blunted. Makes it easier to take over a nation. Also research in the UK has shown that many of these psych drugs and also over-the-counter allergy meds can blunt empathy in people who are taking them.
GerOttman · 61-69, M
check out charitynavigator dot org for reliable info on donating. pay particular attention to the expense ratio which shows how much of donated money actually goes to the stated cause.
CestManan · 46-50, F
@GerOttman How does anyone know if that site is being paid to boost numbers to make the big players look good though?
GerOttman · 61-69, M
@CestManan (sigh..) just look why dont you? smh!
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@CestManan they go into detail, I have checked local charities here.
I used to. Now, I sponsor the adoption fees for dogs/cats. We managed to help 5 cats get a home last year.
@SW-User i donate clothing to needy families.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Snowvixen very good thing to do.
SW-User
That’s the important charity @Snowvixen
PatKirby · M
Thank you for bringing this the attention it deserves. Years back I did a study on the amount of money that actually goes to the needy myself. I was disappointed to discover that a majority of that money goes to administrative fees, bills, etc... and a pittance ends up helping the needy. Then you have the sad music playing in the background, a method straight out of Hollywood. It pulls on those heartstrings and they know it works. No shame. Lots of scoundrels and thieves out there, Charity Navigator is a good place to start when giving. I give to the local pantry where just a few dollars feeds up to 40 hungry mouths.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@PatKirby yeah and several of them say “SUFFERING” in the very same way. Makes me think the same agency is creating commercials for these charities.
Tamara68 · 56-60, F
Where I live, charity organisations get a certification when their overhead costs are within a certain percentage. I only give to those.
TexChik · F
Nope. We donate food to a local church-based pantry that takes care of the elderly who live out in the country around here.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
I will never donate to any so called charity.

Investigating is a waste of effort. There are ways to not disclose anything. If it's not on the books, you can't investigate it.

What I do, when I am able to, is help out individuals or families directly. It's the only way to really donate 100%, without paying someone else salary.

Those commercials cost one heck of a lot of money BTW! Try to buy a commercial on any TV network sometime. Even if it's only a minute on a local TV station.
SW-User
That’s why I don’t donate to anything it’s just a tax break for someone else if I want to give I find someone local in need
wildbill83 · 36-40, M
any "charity" that pumps millions into commercial advertising and/or photo ops is a scam...
SW-User
I'm very particular about whom I give money to
Musicman · 61-69, M
No I don't. Usually less then 10% of your donation as goes to what you intended it for. I prefer donating to local animal charities where I know 100% goes to what I intended it for.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Musicman I just feed the feral cats when they are hungry. No tax write-off needed. Help locally and you know where your money is going.
Musicman · 61-69, M
@cherokeepatti Exactly! When a local shelter says they need cat food I donate cat food. That's not going in anyone's pocket. I have fed feral cats before. We haven't had any in a couple of years though.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Musicman yes I have caught taken a couple of feral females to the animal shelter to be spayed. They will try to find homes (these were gentle enough to be adopted) and if they aren’t adoptable they will bring them right back to the neighborhood and drop them off with a clipped ear. Would still need to help them with food but they won’t be breeding and creating more ferals to feed. I have seen a room with the food, toys, towels, and other things that they need at the shelter and they get a good variety of items that are donated. Helps them stay on budget.
therighttothink50 · 56-60, M
Please post the link.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@therighttothink50 Go to the website The Burning Platform, the article is called Big Charity Scams and it was posted today. It is worth your while to read.
therighttothink50 · 56-60, M
@cherokeepatti I found it but you need to learn how to copy and paste :)
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@therighttothink50 I have an Ipad and I don’t want to. 😂 I did it easily on my computer.
Fairydust · F
No I believe it’s all a scam.
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
If you subscribe to a 5 year contract to donate $$$ 10% will be given to the people the charity was set up for. But don't worry, we only have 1 year contracts here today. So exactly fuck all goes to the needy blind orphans!
Yeah, I no longer donate to those charities.
Ozuye502 · 36-40, M
I do my own clarity work with my MC
Some charities are like that. But it's important to not demonize all charities that invest in the talent they need to grow. I came across this a few years ago and think it's definitely worth the watch.

cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@SooperSarah I am not demonizing all of them but if they pay huge amounts for advertising on tv every night a lot of what you give is not going to those it’s intended for. And the ones that advertise on tv also have fat cats at the top getting obscene salaries.
Ontheroad · M
I check out characters before I make donations, but I do donate to a couple.
Pretzel · 61-69, M
I believe they are "administrative expenses"

but yeah I get it
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Pretzel money running out their asses and they are begging for more. Huge salaries given to doctors and others there at those hospitals. Using the children to make the commercials, they are paid off as well. One of them turned 16 and bought a car with all sorts of adaptations for his disability that cost a lot of money, figured he made it doing those commercials every year. Saw him featured on a news type show.
Dawgsfan3 · 41-45, M
I would if I could
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Dawgsfan3 You need to read up to how the money they collect from the charities is being used.
Azlotto · M
I do not...The suffering children and suffering animals prolly don't see a penny of it.
SW-User
They do if you find them and give personally @Azlotto
