@OldBrit A good friend came here from Kent. She married an American and has lived here for about 35 years now. Her father comes to visit periodically. The last time he was here I played some Elgar for him on the piano. 😊
Welsh (ish) but not too far back on the family treee to end up in England, like many South Walians. Paternal grandparents lived in Canada for a while where they had their kids, so Dad always claimed to be Welsh-Canadian.
@FreddieUK Alberta's most famous song writer, Ian Tyson, wrote a song about being Alberta's child. In it he has the immortal phrase that every Albertan agrees with. When we die we may go to Hell or even Vancouver.
@hippyjoe1955 From what I can make out, they moved back towards Alberta after Vancouver. I picked up quite a lot of, we could call it pride or chauvinism, in Calgary about where they lived and a lot of digs were made to both Saskatchewan and BC. We have similar regional pride.
@FreddieUK Interprovincial rivalry runs deep in Canada. At least the ones between Saskatchewan, Alberta and BC are friendly. The one between Ontario and Quebec and Alberta is not nearly so nice. Funny story when I first went to university I met a young fellow from Northern BC. Of course the old Alberta BC rivalry kicked in but he quickly quashed it. "I'm from North Eastern BC" he explained, "We think of ourselves as being Albertan. Over the years I have discovered that he was right.
@AngelaR80 Thats cool though. I only know 100% the Irish and Southern French side. Who knows what else courses through my veins lol. But there was some interesting answers. Thank you for yours.
My last name is German but German is the second smallest portion of my ancestry. My Welsh ancestry is the biggest part but that is the least known of all my ancestors.
@hippyjoe1955 No its not Jones. My last name begins with D ends with E. Not the right place to share our full names 😆 I would if it wernt for the strange types here.
@tobynshorty Nice 🙂 Theres another person in the comments with Cherokee. Scottish too i believe. I think its only the second coment with cherokee here. Lots of Irish though lol. Really interesting. Thank you.
@Perry1968 I wonder about that too, how that is, that nearly everyone says Irish and it's such a small island? Was it from some early migration period?
@Magenta Yes. I can only think of the potato famine. Apparently that started the travelling community too. (Not full gypsy as thats Roma origins) but yes lots of Irish bloodlines.
I came upon the prison ship Bound down by iron chains I fought the land Endured the lash on the Dusty red soil plains We are one But we are many And from all the lands on earth we come We'll share a dream And sing with one voice I am, Australian
@whowasthatmaskedman Thats a beautiful place tbf. I used to deliver there alot when truck driving. The architecture is awesome. Plymouth. Devon here. Its morning there right now isnt it? Its 22.54pm here.
@SwampFlower Its so cool looking through the comments. It totally reinforces my beliefs that as human beings we are all as one. Yet unfortunately we are cleverly divided. I dont honestly care where a person is from. We cut ourselves and we all bleed. I wished people would unite in this ever dividing world.
@Roundandroundwego I hope things change in that and many respect. The problem reaction solution tatctic seems to be a very real one. I dont declare to be awake but most people are blinded by the bliss of ignorance.
@bijouxbroussard Im sorry to hear about your mother. It doesn't matter how old we are as children. It still hurts and strikes a chord with me too. Ive never tried ancestry.com. iam the youngest of 6 kids. So my older sibblings would know much more than me. I would love to find out more though.
@Perry1968 Thank you. I lost her in 2023, still working through it. 🥺
I don’t know if you’ve ever taken the DNA tests. The amazing thing is that even with siblings the results will be interesting; you’ll see different percentages among you. For example, in MyHeritage, I have 5% North African whereas my brother has 15%.
@bijouxbroussard I know words cant always be of comfort. But just know that she clearly would want you to push on and cherish the good times you had. You are a good person. I feel validated to say that to yiu because ive known you here for a very long time. Heartbreak is terrible. My mum passed in 2001 and i still think of her. It was only earlier my sister and i were talking about her. I dont want to come across all angelic because we all deal with grief differently. Please try to grip that love like your own life depends on it. And like i do with Barbara my wife" I believe talking about them makes sure they are never forgotten. Always here if you ever want to chst my friend ok. 💙
@Lilnonames Nice. Which parent was the one who taught you to be such a trooper in life. And very clever and skillful with your ability to fix things from cars to general house improvements. Great skills
@Lilnonames 👏👏👏👏👏👏 YES and double yes. 100% true. Now it makes sense. What a guy. And what a woman you are. I truly LOVE this. I watch guys from india and the likes where they have very little tools. Precision machinery etc and they are super clever at just getting as much as they can from the machines/vehicles etc that they repair in what you rightly say in this wasteful chuck away world we live in.
