Overused Words I hate Part 2

Gaslighting.
Getting sick of this one; apparently we are all gaslighting each other these days.

It's not even a good metaphor since it really means nothing to anyone anymore. Other metaphors like "up the creek without a paddle" gives some kind of idea what it means.

Yeah, its kinda annoying when words are used so much that they lose their meaning.

Its like the story about the boy who cried wolf

I looked it up in Wikipedia the other day because I never knew what it meant. I am still not entirely sure.

Apparently it came from a play or movie where a wife thought she was going mad because the gaslight levels fluctuated. Her husband said she was imagining it, when in fact he was the one actually causing it!

Supposedly psychologists frown against using it because it is vague and overused.
yep, over used, and often incorrectly used.

@SheCallsMeCrushDaddy The Self-Educated Do Nazi Grammar; the College-Indoctrinated Do Not See Grammar

The same goes for the media-created wrong meaning for "oxymoron." These Jurinalism majors are so stupid that they have shallowly associated it with something said by a moron. Its real meaning is just the opposite: a clever pun in which the words would be contradictory if used in a completely different context, such as "boneless ribs, less (clutter) is more (clarity), paid volunteers, donut holes, etc."

Those who got into media from their college hideouts never listened to the previous generation's media before they became professionals, or else they would have frequently heard "a (claim that something is) contradiction in terms." Oxymoron is a rare literary figure of speech. Irradiated soil could be called "clean dirt," which would be the informed use of "oxymoron."

When people say 'Anyways' instead of 'Anyway'.
Also when people start their reply to a question with the word 'So' when there's no need to.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
I think its official meaning is to bully someone by pretending things that are not true but on social media its now used for someone saying anything you don;t like.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@GeistInTheMachine I was gaslighting you by pretending that you were gaslighting her.

Meta on meta.
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
@Burnley123 Cheeky bastard...😂
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@GeistInTheMachine I'm a smart-arse 😇

The words I am tiring of very quickly are:

"Literally" (when used the wrong way)
"Actually" (when it's every other word in the same sentence)
"Problematic" (🙄)

They're just all over-used, it's ridiculous.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@DearAmbellina2113 99% of the time people use literally, it is actually metaphorically lol
@DearAmbellina2113 People who misuse the word literally make me want to literally punch them in the face.
ravenwind43 · 51-55, F
I was going to say gaslighting..
"Narrative" is super annoying
Thank god "dialogue" is becoming not as common. I think narrative replaced it.
"Woke." 🙄😖
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@ravenwind43 Fuck I'm sick of woke.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@ravenwind43 This is an annoying workplace one: socialize.
"I will socialize this information to the other business units"

Why not just "I will tell"

You would think when people become adults we would not be prone to using fad words.
ravenwind43 · 51-55, F
@JimboSaturn I haven't heard that one! Lol
My recently retired supervisor used to use the word "advise" over and over. "Let them know" would work just as well.
Case of linguistic bleaching win a word or phrase that very precise meaning gets picked up and used to mean something less precise until the word has lost all of its meaning. Consider that was an awesome sandwich nobody has ever been in all of a sandwich standing there gob smacked unable to breathe because the sandwich is so good. Gaslighting, triggering, and many other terms are overdone
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
Many people are consciously or subconsciously being gaslit or gaslightning others so it's not strange that it's often mentioned. But especially younger people have confused what it is. They think anyone being rude is gaslightning.

Indeed so many. "toxic" being one. 😖
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@Magenta oops I just used that one :P
Magenta · F
@JimboSaturn 😄 bad boy. 😏
ravenwind43 · 51-55, F
I thought of another word combo. "Beautifully broken." Ugh.
@ravenwind43 That's a good thing if you're gaming.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@ravenwind43 I never heard that one but it sounds like how a lot of self absorbed SWs would describe themselves
CardiacKintsugi · 61-69, F
Yeah, like between a rock and a hard place. Nothing vague about it.
Gaslight Gatekeep Girlboss.
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
Not sure If I've heard 'Gaslighting' before... Probably for the best.
@Thevy29 Gaslighting is where an abusive person lies about the psychological abuse they inflict, in an attempt to try to convince the other person that they are imagining things. It's almost always much more harmful than the abuse itself, because the end result is to convince the other person that they're crazy.

It comes from a movie of the same name. In it, this woman's husband literally messes with the gas lighting in the house, turning it down just a little bit at a time, and when she asked him if it's darker than it used to be, he tells her the light is right where it always was.

In politics, the meaning of the word gaslighting has gotten muddied and mixed up, and now is being misused to describe a politician who is a liar.
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
@LordShadowfire I know people like that. But I call them A Narcissistic Pretentious C#nt.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
Lots of people just do not know what it means, especially as coming from someone trying to be controlling, making one doubt their own perception.
scorpiolovedeep · 46-50, M
Agreed....
Renaci · 36-40
As someone with OCD I hate how people say they are OCD when they really should be using either the term anal retentive or OCPD.

My son said in an argument that his sister was gaslighting him, he's 13, she's 14,....... yep, that expression has definitely gone too far
Gaslighting isn't being overused. You're just crazy.
It means this, right?
