Removing junk food from SNAP isn’t cruel, it’s remaining true to the program’s original purpose. Thoughts?

Yes we had commodity programs before the food stamp program. There were demonstrations where they wanted food stamps to replace the commodity program. They were arguing that some of the commodity recipients needed fresh veggies and lean meat etc due to being diabetics…and that the commodities were not supplying that. And after so many decades what do we have? Much higher rates of diabetes type II, fatty livers, obesity etc. All due to poor choices at the grocery stores. Even children are developing Type II diabetes and fatty livers.

How about just let people eat?

If they buy steak, people complain.

If they buy luxuries like snack foods, people complain.

No one scrutinizes the shopping cart of people not on SNAP. Why do we feel entitled to judge those on it? How about we all just mind our own business and focus on what's in our own shopping cart?

@FoxyQueen Well said.

@FoxyQueen You have obviously never worked in Healthcare.

@Adrift Crappy food is cheap. Healthy food is expensive. The poor have neither the money or the time to not buy inexpensive food that is quick to make as opposed to healthy food that is more expensive and takes more time to make.

Want poor people to eat healthy? Find ways to make food cheaper and more accessible to everyone one. Regulate prices of food so everyone can afford to eat. These are things we can do but refuse to because of the capitalist "free market".

Don't blame the poor because crappy food is cheap. Blame businesses and the government for not making food less expensive and easy to get.

I don't not think it's cruel.
People think it's cheaper to eat crap, but it isn't always.
I do think it takes skill to cook, though.
For example buying dried beans and rice is pretty cheap.
And if we're solely talking junk food: I would think that would only include sweets, soda,and chips and stuff like that.
Those are not necessary food groups and they can make you ill if you eat too many.
I'm sure they will still be able to buy cake mixes, cookie mixes ,muffin mixes ,and all that kind of thing and frozen foods... It looks like it's only prepared sugary foods that will be banned.
They have never allowed sugary foods on the WIC program for example.

i agree! i was so mad the other day. i was in line at walmart. a man who doesn't speak English was trying to use his food stamp card. in his cart, he had paid for a case of beer.
pdockal · 56-60, M
@akindheart

Technically alcohol isn't allowed
They can have mixed items and ONLY the SNAP approved gets paid by the card ... but I've also seen cards exchanged for cash etc

Tough love is what it is. It may very well help with curtailing health problems such as obesity, diabetes type II, fatty liver and others.
pdockal · 56-60, M
True, but the trouble is that junk food is about the only "food" (if you can call it that) that is cheap.

@wildland

Naturally you added TDS. How much lead paint did SNAP get for you to guzzle?
@Thrust I'm just pointing out that America as a country threw in the towel when they re-elected Trump. Mind you, the Republicans have too because they don't even care that your government has been shut down for over a month. You're actually worse than a Banana Republic at the moment 😂
$25 dollars for the ingredients to make cookies or a box for $4.00.

Oh, and the people who are telling others what junk food is are the ones saying a baby grows in a placenta and the measles are not a big deal.
@cherokeepatti A family of four or five with one parent disabled and the other working two jobs (one to just pay for daycare)? I suppose one of them could bake cookies somewhere in between jobs and spending what time they can with their children and each other.

Not every family is fortunate.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@FlowersInHerHair Disabled are supposed to be high on the list to receive them.
@cherokeepatti They may receive them but how much does that actually feed a family of four or five when we all want them to buy fresh fruits, vegetable, plus dairy, then everything to prepare the meals?

There is no solution to the problem; however, we should never make assumptions or judgement about other peoples’ circumstances.
who sets the list for what's 'junk', and what percentage of SNAP recipients live in areas where anything not on junk list (that isn't something they're growing themselves) becomes a multihour process to aquire?

@pdockal and never without outside politics influencing things, right? have you heard any news sources in the past 6 months?
pdockal · 56-60, M
@dirge

WTF ?
BillyMack · 46-50, M
Let me make some politically divisive comments to get people fired up. Thoughts?
Allelse · 36-40, M
What is SNAP?
James1956 · 61-69, M
@Allelse
Food stamps
“ junk food” says it all as to why it needs to be eliminated. Where are all the healthy foods advocates?
