Yes we had commodity programs before the food stamp program. There were demonstrations where they wanted food stamps to replace the commodity program. They were arguing that some of the commodity recipients needed fresh veggies and lean meat etc due to being diabetics…and that the commodities were not supplying that. And after so many decades what do we have? Much higher rates of diabetes type II, fatty livers, obesity etc. All due to poor choices at the grocery stores. Even children are developing Type II diabetes and fatty livers.
