I've never been prescribed any antidepressant medication, nor have I used them without a prescription.

I’ve always been dead against them. And wanting to do the natural thing of diet and exercise. But I think it’s personal for every person and that you have a good general practitioner that looks at your case and your family history, etc. and just doesn’t write you a prescription.🙏
TessDun · 41-45, F
@FoolishLuna I feel worst and it is crippling me mentally , thinking than being dependent and then having to stop might do more harm
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
@FoolishLuna It is highly individualized, not for everyone.
FoolishLuna · 56-60, F
@TessDun I completely understand. Some of them you just can’t quit cold turkey …sending prayers.
Magenta · F
Never taken them never will. I think like most drugs and meds, they are immensely over prescribed. I agree with Luna, the natural way with diet and exercise should be first priority. But each must do what is in their own best interest.
Magenta · F
@TessDun Aw, well, only you can decide that.
It can't be without side affects. The body has to process everything that goes into it.
Have you tried anything natural, like sunshine, exercise, music, etc..? There is some great healing music with binaural beats that can boost serotonin, dopamine and endorphins on You tube.

Some years ago, a friend of mine, who happens to be a psychiatrist, gave me a sample pack of Paxil. I was deeply depressed at the time, even more so than usual. Almost immediately, I felt entirely better. For a brief period, life was good. It really worked for me.
Some years after that, my doctor prescribed me Paxil again. It did nothing to affect my depression. Since then, I've tried a variety of anti-depressants, and the best that could be said about any of them is that maybe they kept me from feeling even worse.
Overall, I'd say that they are worth trying if you can't figure out some other way to dig your way out, but there's no guarantee that they'll work, and if if they do work for a while, that may or may not continue.

@DunningKruger Been prescribed lexapro but feel no changes, still have so many negative thoughts
KatyO83 · 41-45, F
I have used them in the past. They work to a point for me. I always said though they were until I could get myself better through counselling, mindfulness etc I've tried lots of other things too.

Two days ago I felt like I could use some. But luckily it passed.
Now seriously. I think that those meds are very useful and good where they are truly needed but there are so many stories about how it's just trial and error. Excuse me, what? Do they even know what they are doing? I'm not very motivated to experiment with them because honestly, what else could that be when so many people say "you'll probably need to try a few different types before you find what works for you." Quite bizarre considering suicidal ideation listed as a potential side effect on their leaflets.
Another thing, what if there would be a situation when I wouldn't be able to get them and had to quit cold turkey? I wouldn't want to risk that either.

I get depressed easily
Got some meds for it years ago and they gave me insomnia so I threw them away.
A good cry, eating better, take whole food supplements, exercise and when a sad thought crosses my mind I erase it and think positive and keep busy. Works for me but might not work for others.

I hear if they work they don’t keep working. I don’t take any. I’m not depressed. But then maybe I am. I don’t really enjoy anything any more. Or maybe it be because there is really nothing I like anymore. Cus I don’t I just want peace and quiet. But I have a hose full three grown children and 4 grandchildren all living at home. Makes me tired. And a work start time of 4 am don’t help.

They can help people when prescribed correctly.
My dad had a stroke years ago, I believe they helped him tremendously

One of the side effects of Anti-Depressants is 'Suicidal Thoughts', which is the first step to 'Suicide' itself.
I think I will pass.
There are many natural effective ways to deal with depression ...just saying.

@laurieluvsit thank you! When the side effects out weigh the benefits, uhh, I'll skip.
4meAndyou · F
I don't think they are really necessary for most of the people to whom they are prescribed. If you go walking every day, and take Vitamin D3, you FEEL good.
However, if there is a toxic person in your life and you aren't brave enough to remove them, you will probably be depressed for as long as they are around.

So its up to you. Dont let anyone twll you what to do with your mental health basically. After all..we are all different

Took a while to find anything that worked for me. Eventually prescribed an anti psychotic. Worst side effect is the lethargy and lack of motivation they leave you with.

Antidepressants have a plethora of side effects including depression. Instead of a person trying to find a magical quick fix pill, finding out what is causing the depression and coming to terms with said depression and the cause is a better way of dealing with it.
If I have a nail sticking up through the inside of the bottom of my shoe, I could take a Tylenol or look to see what is poking me on the bottom of my food and remove it.

@Bang5luts Hopefully it would be short term medicantion therapy. Unfortunitly some people will have to remain on that medication for life. In those cases the quality of life for that patient is improved by various degrees and is much preferred by the patient instead of trying to live without the meds. It's not about what you or I may prefer but rather providing the best possible care for that patient possible.
JustEd · 41-45, M
They helped me thru a dark time. Didn’t notice much at the time but looking back not sure id made it thru without them.
BrandNewMan · M
Have never taken them .. a long walk w the dogs on the rail-to-trail path, along the creek or out in the woods usually gives me the boost I need without side effects
Magenta · F
@BrandNewMan Indeed. A good bout of exercise that boosts all those natural feel good chemicals does wonders.
HumanEarth · F
They defeat the purpose don't you think? Just look up the list of side effects on them. They are more dangerous then a gun at times in my eyes.
But that's just my opinion

@HumanEarth Guns aren't dangerous, people can be dangerous!

I was on Escitalopram for a while. It made me obnoxiously happy, also had the effect of not being able to orgasm. So after a month I had a boner that wouldn't go away and I was giggling like an idiot. Not a good look for someone working in Palliative Care. So I quit it cold turkey. (Don't do that) Just so I could do my job well.
Gangstress · 41-45, F

Pharmaceutical companies are evil, greedy for-profit corporations which have a goal to get all of us on as much medication as possible.
Antidepressants also work. We need to keep these two ideas in our head at the same time. Don't shut your brain off, apply critical thought.

i've heard too many bad stories, i wouldn't take them.
I don't function in an orderly fashion without them. It's unfortunate because I don't want to be dependent on something that could be taken away by any kind of supply shortage, leaving me very unwell, but it's my reality. Without meds I'm a car crash. I take way too many risks because I just don't give a shit and then I'd end up in prison or dead.
