Do you ever doubt the existence of others than you?

I'm aware of my thoughts, my experiences, my perceptions, but how can I truly know that others experience the same reality? How do I know they're not just projections of my consciousness?
If everyone else is a projection of your consciousness, you should get tech services to work on your projector.

Like many philosophical questions, this one's always interesting - in theory.

Even if the population is your projection, the people in your movie still have the power to act on you. Their actions affect you, even if that too is created by your mind.

So, in the end, the question doesn't much matter.

@Mamapolo2016 That's a good point

because there are people out there having experiences totally apart from you--you could stop someone at the mall tomorrow and ask what they did two days ago and you had nothing to do with it...but yes, we all see the world through our own distinctive perspectives
elafina · 36-40, F
I'm having a similar issue. But I think in the end it's a matter of perception and it doesn't really matter!
Your story is in your head, my story is in my head, do we share the same head? Maybe, so what?
I can strongly see how my beliefs are affecting my reality. We're that creative and powerful.. Sometimes I recognise that power outside of myself, in another.
An example, there's another person we're waiting to get a bus together. They're unhappy with the idea of taking the bus so it never arrives. While I love the bus and I know that if I were by myself, I'd have taken it.
SwiftieShutterbug · 31-35, F
@elafina Love this perspective!
Lostpoet · M
I think our perceptions are all a little bit different and so is our realities which makes us the more beautiful little packets of molecules.

I once took a philosophy course and our first paper was "How do we know someone else sees the same blue I see? What does 'That is blue'" mean?
Docdon23 · M
@SwiftieShutterbug Awww...thank you!! My younger me would have argued to be right...I also find myself pausing and thinking, "is this worth arguing about?" I make my point and leave it at that--there is no need to beat others over the head with our opinions...i started reading about something called the Amygdala Hijack, how our brains enter into fight or flight when an argument starts and logic goes out the window, overtaken by emotion and defensiveness, fight or flight...and it is also OK to live in peace with others who hold different opinions!!
pride49 · 31-35, M
@Docdon23 omg in Matilda musical the song called 'quiet' they mention this only it's red. It goes. "Have you ever wondered, if I say, say red. For example. There's no way of knowing if red. Means the same thing in your head, as red means in my head, when someone says red". 😌 I like that song
Docdon23 · M
@pride49 It is interesting to think through how we come to a mutual understanding of what "blue" means--not a shape, not a particular object, not a smell, but a color...probably from having a number of blue objects pointed out to us as kids...interesting at how the human brain grasps these concepts at a very young age. It works with red as well!
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
The last time anyone else experienced your reality was probably when you were very young and with others of same age probably in your first educational setting.

But as your range of experiences grows it colours your perspective on everything.
I was once on a course and I met a serving police officer.
We were discussing similar issues with the lecturer when this police officer said in a somewhat throwaway comment
Yeah. Stick any three people on a street corner and tell them to look out for the guy in a red jacket and then stage an unrelated incident in front of them. Then try taking statements from the witnesses and afterwards compare them. You'll get three different perceptions of the same incident. This is what makes life difficult when folk have to appear in court as witnesses.
Because everyone interprets 'reality' in a different way

When they agree with everything without question.

I see it as the philosophy of Life as how we come to existence and exist and think act etc. To each, only I exist and all others are a metaphor through which we develop our thoughts. In other words all others are just books that have content and we take only what we want.

Deep subject.. shall continue later. bfn .

All that exists that can be denied deserves to be denied; and being truthful means: to believe in an existence that can in no way be denied and which is itself true and without falsehood.

Friedrich Nietzsche
SwiftieShutterbug · 31-35, F
@therighttothink50 Nietzsche's words always provoke profound contemplation. It's a reminder of the importance of discerning truth in a world filled with uncertainty.
Carissimi · 70-79, F
I think most have had that thought, at times. Who can say? I think in the Hindu religion we are all part of God, meaning God is playing different roles through each of us, so what we experience is what God experiences.

Imagine being God, and doing that after erasing His own memory, and one day He wakes up to find He is alone in existence, and has to start the process all over again. That would be a nightmare. To be that alone.
pride49 · 31-35, M
@Carissimi ooh I've had daydreams about this
Carissimi · 70-79, F
It would make a good movie@pride49
pride49 · 31-35, M
@Carissimi it would.

Because your conscious only helps you determine right and wrong. Your mind can develop images of people but not entire personalities.
Northwest · M
Trying to decipher this.

You're standing next to a person, watching someone cut down a tree. You're sad, and you're looking at the other person, thinking they're also sad? That might be true, only if you're both responding to a Facebook post, directing you to head out to the location, where the evil condo owner, is getting a tree cut down. If the condo is the person standing next to you, then no, they're experiencing a different reality, even though it's the same event.
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
That's something I've considered all my life. I think there's no way to actually know, honestly. It sort of has to be taken on faith.
soulshadow · 36-40, M
We can't know anything about anything really. So you can't.
pride49 · 31-35, M
Yes. And then I check the newspaper and labeling on my toothpaste to insure nothing has changed 😌 This morning I was confirming things that i had changed yesterday. To confirm I'm still in this reality...(I was abnormally anxious and freaking out yesterday). I mean. It would be cool to be the only 'real' person. But meh.
Pfuzylogic · M
Leaving the womb can have a traumatic effect on the mind. Maybe the fact that you were born by a mother would help you grasp reality.
SwiftieShutterbug · 31-35, F
@Pfuzylogic But what about those who might not have a strong relationship with their mothers or were not nurtured in the same way?
Pfuzylogic · M
@SwiftieShutterbug
Certainly that reality, that all have mothers would nudge them back.
PhilDeep · 51-55, M
Philosophers have mused over such matters since forever, it seems, but no, it's not a line of thought I have any interest in whatsoever.
meJess · F
Because people do things you are not aware of or for reasons you cannot understand. A projection would presumably have some flavour of the mind projecting it.
Entwistle · 56-60, M
If you start from the viewpoint that you and others are separate then maybe that's the wrong way to look at things?
Livingwell · 61-69, M
I don't think they do experience your reality. They have different experiences., desires, and perceptions. I like how you think!
DownTheStreet · 51-55, M
Everyone’s perception is shaped by a mix of genetic heritage and experiences, they will all diverge to some extent
ElRengo · 70-79, M
Nope.
Not me.
Same as apples felt before Newton, our awareness of it is mostly of (at least) weak relevance for the Universe being how it is.
SW-User
No.... but sometimes I doubt whether I exist or not. Also, I wouldn't expect others to experience my reality.
Zeusdelight · 61-69, M
No-one else experiences what you see as reality because our experiences will alter reality in a unique way.
originnone · 61-69, M
not really....probably did when I was little....I think it's a worthwhile thought though.
eventtemple123 · 22-25, M
I usually think either everyone else is an npc, or I'm an npc in the real world.
SinlessOnslaught · 26-30, M
That's called solipsism and yes, I often doubt that anything other than myself is real.
Ferric67 · M
Everyone has their own version of reality and truths
SW-User
I’m not sure anyone experiences the exact same realty . 😊

Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear
you told few hours ago you finished the story im still waiting :P
No i know other people actually exist.. idk about your people tho
No way. Especially the dog a few cars down.
AmericanBroad · 31-35, FVIP
I never really thought about it
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
@AmericanBroad Well, I hope that changes starting now.
Entwistle · 56-60, M
There is no you having those thoughts.
Read "The Ultimate Egoist" by Theodore Sturgeon.
Still waiting on you to finish what you started 🤭
your not aware of me anymore 🥺

MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
cuz youre not insane?
SwiftieShutterbug · 31-35, F
@MartinTheFirst I guess if you were truly isolated within your own consciousness, you wouldn't even be contemplating these questions.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
Philosophically speaking, you don't.
The only thing we can be certain of is that we as conscious observers, exist.
As objective as we try to be, we all use our subjective experiences to see the world.
We are basically just aware that we are aware.
Donotfolowme · 51-55, F
I believe that my experiences and existence isnt of my own in isolation. There are defy millions out there going through the same
lumberjackslam · 41-45, M
so that means you're a figment of my imagination. admit it!!! the jig is up! I'm wise to you and you can't hide it.
Renaci · 36-40
Main character syndrome. Yeah I get that as well.
SwiftieShutterbug · 31-35, F
@Renaci I think it's okay to feel that way sometimes.
Renaci · 36-40
@SwiftieShutterbug It is. It doesn't do any harm. It's just an interesting question. Might look into the philosophical zombie argument as well. It's asks stuff along the same lines.
