I feel like that word "the government" is what fucks things up because it makes it sound like it's one monolithic entity with similar people operating throughout, whereas in reality it's a vast and extremely complex unification of a million different organizations with very different characters. The CIA lied us into the Iraq War. The NSA constructed a vast surveillance network of American citizens that their own agents illicitly use to spy on their exes. The NIH funds cancer research, and NASA put a man on the Moon.
I agree. Because there is some corruption and incompetence is not a reason to throw out the whole thing. The govt also gets a lot of things right and does much good.

I trust our institutions and trust that many are in politics, or the public sector, because they want to help better the lives of others. That said, I don't trust Republican politicians. And while I usually like nuance and try not to speak in black and white terms, not in this case. I think there's a very defined line these days. I see them as ideologues and enemies of democracy.

The government does all those things because it needs to keep the system viable in order to keep making huge sums of cash for a select few. You're just a cog in that system, so you have to be fed and watered. They care for our safety so outside enemies can't wreck their system or derail their gravy train. They provide certain things, just enough things, to keep you happy so you'll continue to contribute and be a useful citizen to them.

@Penny Increasing retirement pensions more than needed and raising taxes, insurance and various fees to milk working generation, especially small businesses, from which many will just pack suitcases and leave for a country with better economy and with a hope for getting higher living standard. There were a few corruption scandals and direct ties with mafia in the past, yet they are up there again. Younger, studying generation is raised to go to universities abroad and the results of the last elections just confirmed their beliefs that it's the right decision.
@CrazyMusicLover Not to mention how even though the government was tasked to protect us from greedy entities, the government doesn't care allowing us to be gouged monetarily everywhere we turn.
The Government throws crumbs to its people, makes them feel good. The government ( this one in the US) if it cared for its citizens, wouldn’t be squandering money on Ukraine, Israel, allowing illegals to flood into this country snd squandering millions on them and putting us at risk of a possible Third World War.

@soar2newhighs WW3 happens if China/Russia feel boldened enough to make the move, by essentially allowing them to take Ukraine you're making it more likely and not less likely. Besides, what's being sent in aid packages is for the most part scrap that would cost more to dismantle internally than to donate where it's needed. It's also far cheaper than what will have to be sent (and in that case it's not only hardware, but also personnel) the moment Russia is done with UA and moves onto the target that happens to be a NATO country.

The government doesn't care, otherwise I would not have had to fight for disability, despite being medically qualified by even social security's own blue book. I have also seen others denied or suspended over bullshit, for examples, an Elderly neighbor's retirement getting suspended because she saved and had $5,000 in her savings account, another Elderly neighbor having to cash out a childhood life insurance policy they had no idea they had, Globe Life is the most known insurance company that allows grandparents to take out policies on their grandchildren, my own Aunt had to spend ALL of her late husband's insurance money before her and my cousins got one red cent in survivor's benefits, even though she only had barely $1,500 left after burial expenses and other debts were all paid off, one friend of the family was denied public assistance because she made barely a dollar over qualification with her job.
