Part of the problem (which exists everywhere that you have more than one main political party) is the concept of each party's core ideology.
Traditionally, 'left wing' is more people-focused and wants to share the 'good stuff' with everyone more equitably, while 'right wing is purely focused on accelerated wealth concentration for the elite and screwing everyone else.
The trouble is that over time, these things change a bit. Sometimes the shift is more to the right (where major parties all shift more towards fascist thinking) and sometimes the shift is more to the left (where major parties shift to more populist thinking).
Unfortunately, government is almost exclusively a combination of reliigion and corporate elite so the thrust to the 'right' is often much bigger than the thrust to the left. We saw this with Trump's first term as Big Cheese where he tried to isolate the USA and pander to religion, business, elite, and similar circles. We had that here with the Scott Morrison federal government until the 2022 election.
Government, being formed from/by/for/about/with the 'elite' never really cares about the people, regardless of which flavour of ideology currently holds office.

@zonavar68 Another part of the problem (though I agree with your analysis) is that labels can be coopted over time. Terms like "Left, Right, Consertavice and Elite tend to mean vastly different things than they used to. There is no authentic left in America. Just as there is no authentic Communism anywhere any more. In fact the "behind the scenes" management of the left and right nations is not that far apart in how it is actually managed, until you get down to a case like North Korea which is virtually a Feudal basket case..Both sides are managed by the money. Who has it, who needs it to stay in place and who gets to keep it..😷

@whowasthatmaskedman The big-money families behind the US economy being a prime example. Once in the high echelon they will tend to stay there and they are actually the 'rulers' of the executive branch of government at every level. Those interests become the cartel that basically control the UN/WHO/WEF/IMF as well.

Capitalism has created a very powerful ruling elite. Leftist politics is the way out. Democracy might actually allow the USA to become a peaceful and egalitarian society.

@Roundandroundwego The same thing happens with socialist countries, like the UK. But then it's even worse, because it's upheld through state force, and citizens have even less of their own labour left to use to improve their situation.

@Philth I was living in Las Vegas, where Carlin died, complaining of chest pains after doing another HBO special, which was never aired. I had a friend that was in the audience who told me he was doing nothing but screaming ranting and raging, pacing back and forth like a caged tiger, he also said since he was near the back he saw a lot of people walking out, complaining that he completely lost it. Carlin's widow apparently got a court judgment to prevent HBO from airing it.

@TheRascallyOne xD Yep. But you can get yourself out of it, through doing what you can to improve your personal situation. But most can't be bothered with the slightest bit of improvement and don't like taking responsibility, so don't bother and blame "capitalism" to pretend that their lack of success is actually virtuous.
