How would you feel about visiting a country where people routinely walk around brandishing firearms ?

SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
Absolutely f*****g terrified 😞 I wouldn't trust many of my fellow citizens with a potato peeler, let alone a pistol 😔
Brandishing? By definition, that essentially means waving a weapon about in a menacing manner. I don't think anyone has seen that on a routine basis. Perhaps you mean open carry. Such as with a holstered handgun. I've seen that in some areas in the western US. Doesn't bother me.
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
@BizSuitStacy Thanks for the clarification, its important.
Dainbramadge · 56-60, M
I guess you actually meant with guns in plain view because I saw a few others define actual brandishing.
It doesn't bother me for people to have guns.
I actually like to have people around with guns.
How many mass shootings happen when everyone has a gun???
BUT ... if no one has a gun, what are you going to do if someone with a gun decides to start shooting?
You will never be able to wish away the gun just like illegal drugs.
It is a part of life now and should be dealt with accordingly.
People have to stop treating other people like potential criminals and start dealing correctly with the actions of actual criminally minded people.
Criminals will always use the tool that gives them the greatest advantage over their victims.
So the most obvious answer to the problem is give everyone a gun.
Then, no one has the upper hand on anyone else under any circumstance.

@Ryderbike What bothers you about me having a gun every place I go?

I live in the Northeast. Nobody brandishes anything other than the occasional attitude.
JuniperEmz · 22-25, F
I've been to Israel and there are people (ie those in army reserves or on leave or whatever) who bring their guns to the beach. I wasn't nervous.

That's a comparison to make with the US.
ArtieKat · M
@JuniperEmz The first time I was in close proximity to an armed soldier was in Gaza, when it was still part of Israel.
redredred · M
As Robert Heinlein observed, “An armed society is a polite society”.
redredred · M
@Kwek00 you simply don’t have the brains of a fucking ice cube.
Kwek00 · 41-45, M
@redredred Did you get that insult from a meme too? I'm just wondering if there is any individual thought left inside that hollow space on top of your body.
@redredred an armed society is called a war zone
LizOwen · 41-45, F
I presume it would be a third world country, like Abyssinia, Sudan, Afghanistan and so forth. In a civilised country there would be no need for people to carry a firearm.
Best avoid such a place until they mature.

@ManKing thank you
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@ManKing 'There is no "civilized" country where there is no need for someone to carry firearms.' ........Of course not , just all those ones that aren't America.

'It is a stupid ass question.' ...... Is it really ? Is that why other countries' governments routinely warn travellers about what to expect entering the US.

'After all, the rate of gun-related deaths is the United States is going up. And mass shootings in America -- 610 as of November 25, according to Gun Violence Archive -- have become commonplace and make headlines around the world.

Would-be visitors aren't being warned off entirely as if America is an active war zone. Each nation has its own approach, but a general theme boils down to this: The United States is more violent than what you're used to. Learn to take precautions there that you might not have to take at home.'

Adogslife · 61-69, M
Brandishing? Like in a war zone? Or, do you mean legal carry (like in the US) where someone can be armed but not obviously so?
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@Neoerectus Oh , I think it's plainly intended to be intimidatory. Why else would they have them ?
ShaneMckay · 41-45, M
@RodionRomanovitch um . . . Self defense? Support of the United States Constitution, 2nd Amendment?? Because I can?

Been there. The country was Israel.
It was great seeing bikini clad females walking around carrying assault rifles on the beaches there.
redredred · M
When bored I some times browse in gun shops so seeing them “on the hoof” might be nice. I might even start up a conversation with a gun owner if I see one that interests me.
@redredred

The reason is stated why you have to have a breakfast .

The reason is stated why you have to have a right to bear arms.

It’s not complicated

Bu the way dumbest analogy ever
redredred · M
@Ryderbike Your complaint about my “analogy” (it’s not an analogy, it’s a syntactical model) is based on your inability to counter its aptness.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
That sounds somewhere like Colombia or Haiti; maybe parts of Mexico.

I daresay some will immediately think "United States of America" but though I have not been there, and I do know a lot of Americans have a near-fetish for guns and things called "amendments" (do civilians really need assault-rifles?), I very much doubt most of them normally go around "brandishing" their guns.

Anyway I'm sure someone would advise me which areas are best avoided, and there are parts of British cities I'd be afraid of at night; although if attacked there I'd far, far be more likely be coshed or stabbed than shot. Not that that's much comfort.

A friend told me of a curious incident in the USA a few years ago.

One of his hobbies is caving, and he and a friend visited the USA to attend a caving conference; so perhaps a long way from the nearest "package holiday" destinations for overseas tourists.

They were befriended by one of the locals at the conference, who invited them back to his parents' farm. There the father showed them his private arsenal of about twenty guns ("Oh, some people have far more than that!" they were told); and given a chance at target-shooting on the family's private range.

My pal said he then visited the local shop to buy some beer and replace the ammunition they'd expended.

The beer? No chance: the shop assistant could not understand his UK driving-licence, even though he tried to explain how its number reveals your date-of-birth, so she could not accept he was old enough. (He must have left his passport back with his hosts.)

The ammunition? No problem. Despite being obviously a foreigner unable to prove his identity easily to the shop staff, in an area that probably sees few foreign visitors!
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
It's fine. I used to live in Wyoming and this was a regular occurrence.

But don't let me stop you making some tiresome point about America and guns.

Are you guys all on the same schedule?

I guess it could be that I am responding to pointless provocations from the British on gun control so maybe its a feed thing....
helenS · 36-40, F
In fact I felt quite safe when I visited "that" country, and lived there for a while.
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@helenS Did you ever participate in an active shooter drill ?
helenS · 36-40, F
@RodionRomanovitch No I certainly didn't. 😏
Elessar · 26-30, M
Citizens of that one country everyone's thinking of, but not naming, reading this post like:
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
@Elessar Citizens of that unnamed country rolling their eyes and responding with a gif of an Italian slurping spaghetti.

GerOttman · 61-69, M
Not a big fan of brandishers, I'm fine with open carry of firearms however.
Visiting the US is quite risky.
GerOttman · 61-69, M
@RodionRomanovitch those were NOT attempts! now I'm offended. if it has escaped your notice (it has) I ain't arguing shit. I am expressing an opinion. in my opinion, you have your head...
dakotaviper · 56-60, M
@Underconstruction not any riskier than visiting a country that views women as second-class citizens.

Depends on the country. I’ve travelled through Israel where it’s normal to see a 18 year old Israeli male get on a bus wearing military fatigues and M16 and sit next to a Rabi.
In Israel every make completes 2 years of compulsory military service from 18 years of age.
badminton · 61-69, MVIP
Not great. Especially if those gun carrying people are untrained.

I hope future gun control laws in the U.S. will make it a requirement for gun owners to take a gun safety training class. An untrained person with a gun is a huge danger to themselves and everyone around them.
dakotaviper · 56-60, M
@badminton hate to tell you this but gun safety training courses used to be taught in our Public-School Systems here in the USA. How do I know this you may ask? I completed several Gun Safety classes in Junior High School and High School while enrolled in my Indiana Public School education back in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Then sometime in the 1990s, Liberals removed that from the curriculum of our Public-School Systems.
Diotrephes · 70-79, M
@badminton If the Slave Patrollers were properly trained in how to use guns they wouldn't need to shoot a suspect 16 times or more.
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
You must not live in a red part of the US.

I already live in USA
Slade · 56-60, M
Since unprovoked brandishing is illegal in all 50 states, where is this mythical country
Slade · 56-60, M
@GerOttman true. But the obvious intention of the d-bag OP is yet one more snide anti-American thread
This message was deleted by its author.
GerOttman · 61-69, M
@Slade actually, I don't think it is. The question appears to be deliberately open ended and subject to individual interpretation of the responder.
NewBecky · 51-55, F
If everyone was peaceful then quite safe. If everyone was rioting then, of course, not safe. The people matter most.
chrisCA · M
@NewBecky You don't need a riot for things to go wrong. Too much testerone out there, people with fragile egos, and a chip on their shoulder.
NewBecky · 51-55, F
@chrisCA So, right. It yet boils down to a breakdown in society is what causes dangers. We need to raise well grounded, reasonable, loving men and women... and those men and women (brandishing weapons) are protectors. I feel safe around them but unsafe around dodgy people.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
define walk around brandishing firearms, if they are openly packing weapons, i would be very uncomfortable, guns make me very nervous!
Northwest · M
It kind of makes me nervous, but it is what it is, when you want to do wine tasting, and enjoy fresh farm produce.
iamelijah · 26-30, M
Humm. Safe? 😅

I wanna visit DMZ some day. I wanna see how tight the security between two borders.

US? No no no.
gdon39 · 41-45, M
Wouldn’t go in the first place unless I was back in the service. That would be different.
Fungirlmmm · 51-55, F
Do I have one too?
Fungirlmmm · 51-55, F
@ShaneMckay a firearm
ShaneMckay · 41-45, M
@Fungirlmmm I don't know! Do you? I certainly do!
Fungirlmmm · 51-55, F
@ShaneMckay I meant in the example. Of course I do in real life.
turbineman40 · 80-89, M
Very unsafe and would not go to the country in the first place
chrisCA · M
It would depend on the country, and who those people were.
We didn't design it for peace of safety.
I don’t go to war zones myself.

@swirlie I used to go all the time. But stopped the day trump was elected.

That’s called a war zone,
fanuc2013 · 51-55, F
I would have no problem with that
Entwistle · 56-60, M
I wouldn't visit such a place.
Jonjdw · 46-50, M
Where is this. What country
scrood · 31-35
Sounds interesting
DDaverde · 56-60, M
Been there done that .
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
Not safe for sure.
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@MrBrownstone Haiti ?

@Slade I assume, them, that they are locked, separating the weapons from the ammunition, thus protecting innocent people and theft?
Slade · 56-60, M
@samueltyler2 Except for the ones mounted on vehicles
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Slade what?
